    Keeper of the hens

Here are the photos of Tilly and her baldiness as promised :P

A few of them are blurred (it's difficult taking close-up photos of a chicken!) but hopefully you can make out the new feather growth. All the photos are in chronological order. The first batch were taken about a week and a half ago, and the second were taken today...

    Tilly
^ ^ ^ Tilly's normal appearance, taken about month ago

    tilly moult 1
A very shabby looking Tilly :)

    tilly bum 2

    tilly bum 3
They're a bit blurred but you can make out all the blue spines sticking out from her skin - and the bloody one that Penny pecked off :-\

    scraggy tilly
What Tilly looks like during moult from the side...

    funny tilly
Hahaha - you can just make out the spine-feathers on her neck, but really i just posted this because i think it's an amusing photo...

    tilly close-up
When the spines are about an inch long they begin to grow little feathered tufts

    close-up 2
The spines are actually surprisingly thick, these will eventually grow into Tilly's big tail feathers :001_smile:

    tilly bum 6
Tilly's bottom again (the feather Penny pecked has healed nicely and is just starting to grow again)

    new feathered tilly
And a birds-eye view of Tilly's lovely soft new feathers!

I'll keep taking photos of Tilly's progress and updating this thread :)

:D She's looking very bald and patchy, but has her appetite back and has actually been coming out of the coop to free-range with the others, so she must be feeling better in herself!

I can't believe how thick the spines are!!!!! Pictures 7 & 8 show it really well - in fact, it looks like she's had feather extensions and they've been attached with sellotape! For someone who hasn't got chickens, this is fascinating.

Do / will Penny and Milly moult?

CC, I tried it with zoom but the camera found it too hard to focus, so i was just following Tilly around the garden like a crazy person :D She was very good about it though, and didn't mind the camera being so close at all.

I usually collect loads of each girls' feathers, but this year i only have three of Tilly's because the others all got scratted about in the dirt when the girls were digging in the coop...

See i thought everyone would find these photos really boring!! I remember the first time Tilly, Libby & Penny moulted and we didn't have a clue what was going on - thought they were dying at first!

Yes, Penny and Milly will moult too. Although it looks like they are waiting till the weather gets even colder, silly girls :-\

So ... is there a conscious element to moulting?! Can they 'choose'?!

Ha! That's a very good question, i've never thought of that - i'm not sure actually :)

I don't know if they 'choose' when to moult or if it just 'happens.' It's supposed to happen during the back end of summer (Tilly got the timing spot-on!) but in the past all my chickens have moulted during winter and then being absolutely frozen! :D

Maybe the reason shy Tilly shed her tail feather's first was mother nature's way of keeping chickens beautiful. The spines are really creepy and interesting. It must be painful for chickens to have their feathers pulled off becuase they are so deep in their skin and body! Maybe that is why one has to be carefull while clipping chicken feathers.

Okay, that's a little better, it's just in two seperate posts now :P I need to take some new photos of Tilly's feathers, they're coming along nicely...

You gotta be careful cutting chicken feathers 'cause if you cut too far down the flight feathers, they will bleed and ultimately be painful for the chicken... :ack2:

Milly has just started moulting too :woohoo: I noticed a lot of fluffy white feathers about the coop, and after a lot of prodding i found a few white spines coming through on her chest...she has such pretty spines compared to Tilly & Penny!

I think that's pretty much it for egg production now, over for another year... :001_smile:

The darker, almost fully-black feathers sticking out from her rear end are her new ones..."My what beautiful feathers you have!"

Her bottom's looking much better, right Diane? No longer makes you want to scream?

Once again her new feathers are the short, 'dull' black ones on her back

Tilly is getting her shape back, hurrah!

These pics were taken today, exactly a week after the previous batch were taken. The feathers grow hella fast!

I had a photo with a bit of runny poo clinging to her new feathers. I did think of putting it up for you Diane, but decided not to ;)

Kate, it's the spines of the new feathers growing through that pushes out the old feathers, if that makes sense ?

Yep Lynn Tilly timed it quite right, i think it's Milly who's gonna be bald next, although not sure if Penny has lost a few feathers too...

I think so...pick a moulting chicken up and they are not happy! Milly gets really sad whilst moulting, because she likes to be picked up or hugged tightly, but it hurts her when she's growing her feathers :D

She's not feeling very well at the moment. She's just losing her feathers and her spines are starting to come through (the beginning of the moult seems to be the worst, or at least it is for my chucks?) but she has a cold as well, poor baby
