Hiya, my girls have been laying now for nearly two weeks, there's four of them and i'm generally getting 3 eggs a day but yesterday morning someone had laid a soft shelled egg! They have grit and oyster shell and pick up and eat god knows what out the garden! Do i need to do something or wait and see if i get anymore?

    Keeper of the hens

A soft shelled egg can indeed signify that the hen isn't getting enough calcium (which they use to form the shell), or other nutrients...

However it sounds like it's just that your hens are running up to ending laying for Winter (the shorter daylight hours aren't enough for them to lay) - and you often find they'll lay strange eggs as they wind down.

They can do it too when they start to lay in the spring too - one of ours once laid a perfect egg, except it was about 1 cm in diameter!

The only other time you should be worried about shell-less eggs is if the shell has somehow stuck in the hen, which can lead to all sorts of problems like blood-poisoning and death, but I would honestly think it's likely that they're just coming up to stopping laying due to the short days.

    Keeper of the hens

Basically what my dad has already said...

Soft shelled eggs usually indicate a lack of calcium, however seeing as your girls have access to oyster grit it is highly unlikely that that is the problem.

It's probably to do with the shorter days and the hen is getting ready to stop laying for the winter - prepare to see more shell-less eggs, huge eggs, pointy eggs, small eggs and all sorts of other weird eggs...

Tilly once stepped onto a shell-less egg when she was a young 'un, and was wearing it like a slipper!! :rolling:
