    Keeper of the hens

Just to make some people insanely jealous (mainly my dad :P ) here are some photos of the snow at Keele last week, and us lot messing about in it

    just starting to snow
Here it is just starting...at this point we were all sat in the kitchen, crowded around the window and waiting for enough to settle so we could go play in it :hurray:

    SNOOOOOW!!!
    Snowball fights!!

    big snowball!
There's always one who takes it that little bit too far...in case you can't see it, this is Tallulah throwing a snowball twice the size of my head at someone!

    snow 2
    Starting to make Harold's body...

    harold 2
HAROLD! We're still not quite sure what he was...some sort of animal with hair, whiskers and no arms...

    So yes, enjoy

I just did a quick google while chatting to Scarlet and discovered that the coldest temp recorded in Canada was -63C... :weather_snowing: (gulp!)

We were much more brutal when we were kids (I'm talking 6-10 years old). During arranged snow ball fights there would inevitably be someone who created ice balls (You pour cold water on a compacted snowball and let it freeze...brutal...the "game" usually ended when someone got one of those on the head! Quick introduction to conflict resolution at a young age!

We had such lovely weather today we decided to go for a walk, but by the time everyone was up & dressed etc it was getting dark, so we had a walk in the dark instead :)

We're also having a midnight 'ghost' walk tonight - we're going to the cemetery, then on to Keele Hall (where Lady Sneyd is said to wander) to look for spooks and then finishing off at the ampitheater! There's a video of the ampitheatre here if anyone is interested!

That's typical of a "good" storm here - 20 - 30 cms. And a REALLY good one is like 50+ cms... but thats pretty rare.

But this one wasn't that great. :( The snowfall advisory has ended.

We now have one and a half feet of snow, and have taken part in a 2 hour snowball fight with other Blocks in Hawthorns...this involved being pelted in the face with ice balls, falling on your backside as the snow turned to ice from people running across it, climbing over walls to avoid attacks...all very fun!

Typical that the one week my parents take my coat home for my Grandma to fix, it snows huh? :-\ I got wrapped up though, in my funky hat as you can see!

Well i'm guessing it's about that deep - it reaches the top of Jenny's wellies when she stands in it, and covers all the mammoth curbs near our Block. People keep forgetting about them and step off only to sink into the snow, or stub their toes on them :D

The bit by Templar is even deeper, it's all in drifts against the wall, you can take a running jump into it and not hurt yourself - just get very cold!

There's an ad for 'snow chains' on the last page. "However do they string snow together in links?" I wondered, thinking of daisy chains and paper chains.
I'm really disappointed now I've realised they're just chains to put on cars during snowy weather. Bah.

I suggest that all the UK Hencammers - and chicks - move down to Trev's Mum's place for the rest of this winter.

I remember she mentioned us her own tin version of "X Block" for us to stay in. If the hens bunk in with us they can deal with the bug-things that we are told swarm all over that country.

They don't seem to mind it too much, although they have found a place in the run that doesn't seem to have been snowed on as yet.
I had trouble coaxing them out of the run yesterday they were't interested at all as it had drifted up at their door and was about 3inches deep!
Poor cold chicken...Pumpkin was tempted by a few blades of grass peeping their heads above the blanket of snow and she really enjoyed it although a wood pigeon sat watching her steal what might have been his breakfast!!

Posted By: ollie in UKI suggest that all the UK Hencammers - and chicks - move down to Trev's Mum's place for the rest of this winter.

I remember she mentioned us her own tin version of "X Block" for us to stay in. If the hens bunk in with us they can deal with the bug-things that we are told swarm all over that country.

Ha ha Oliie that is funny, actually the bugs are not all that bad here despite all the tall tales about huntsman spiders and bugs big enough to carry you away!

I love the idea of the hens bunking in with us, they make such nice little clucky sounds at bedtime but they would probably want to 'roost' on top of someones head for the night and the next morning we would wake up all poopy!

CW, that's a wonderful picture of your Pumpkin in the snow. My hens won't even come out of their pen if there is snow on the ground.

Aw bless Pumpkin, i'm sure the pigeon will get payback by stealing some chicken treats! I remember one year our chucks refused to move unless we shovelled a path through the snow for them! Milly, however, goes around eating the stuff :-\

The snow seems to make lovely cushions on everything it can.
A neighbour's very square lawn looks like a big iced cake.
Mine is all covered in animal tracks.

Ollie thats sounds beautiful and so descriptive. I love the thought of widdle animal tracks in the snow. There widdle paws and claws getting all chilly as they trip lightly accross looking for food.

When I went to the car yesterday there were bird tracks across the grass - but they were really big! I'm sure there's a secret (shh) chicken around here somewhere (or a magpie pretending he's a chicken).

Trev's Mum said "widdle paws and claws getting all chilly "

I understand that foxes have a kind of circulation in their legs so that they don't feel the cold. Wonder if that applies to any other creatures.

Sounds like a good idea Ollie for animals (and humans for that matter) living in snowy regions.

Thinking more logically, it'll not be circulation, it'll be lack of cold sensing nerves.

I think it's raining on our snow.
Went out in it for a long walk across fields and stuff today though.
Saw HUNDREDS of widdle bunny rabbit tracks where they'd put their front paws forward together and hopped with their back paws apart. Lots of rabbits had followed each other out of their burrows so some bunny paths were well worn.

He was already there - I had to fetch him back or I'd be arrested and charged with child abandonment! OK, so he's 24, but I couldn't leave him.

It was terrible. I have never driven in so much snow on such appauling roads. I went at 15 MPH the whole way, and everyone going the other way was doing the same. Only saw one car going my way - pillock in a 4x4 right up my backside. Didn't do him any good, he still had to wait. We got home very slowly and in one piece. Never again!!

Thanks for worrying about me - hubby was asleep in bed and knew nothing of it!!

I have an awful memory of sliding down a long steep hill and getting the wheels jammed onto the kerb edge to try slow down. Dreadfull crossroads at bottom!
For years after, even in summer, I used to get the colly-wobbles going down there.

It's snowing again! It had very nearly all melted since the rain at the beginning of the week but at about 3 this afternoon it started again, with BIG flakes, and now the ground is all lovely and white again.
