Thanks for all who replied to me intro post. I am now pleased that i have finally finished building my chicken coop which i started over 2 weeks ago and £65 pound or so later( still a saving on the ones i saw on ebay.)its ready.
I picked up the chickens this evening and i have pics which i will add in a sec if i can figure out how to do it.
My son josh has decided to call them Elaine and Vikki after two of his aunties. I can tell you i think its quite exciting to have them. For those of you who are wondering they were bought from a free range farm cos they are at the end of their lay but they should lay the odd one or two come spring.

so next post will be pucs of the coop and the residents of it. oh and thanks to all who responded to my intro post. Diane my name is Daron.

Daren, can't wait to see the pictures...some of my hens are 10 years old and are still laying for me...they will do right by you if you feed and love them.

Howdy Daron - glad to see you back. We are on pins & needles about those photos. How cool that you would provide a home for hens that you think possibly won't lay much anymore. There's a "how to" for posting photos somewhere on here, if you need it...

Well thats the story so far folks. BTW no-one believes i built the coop myself they all think its a flat pack. lol how very dare they!!! I designed it from other coops i saw on the net and then sketched plans, dimensions and the rest is history as they say. well i hope they bring my son and i many hours of pleasure. Oh and some tasty eggs for brekie - no pressure mind lol.

Well done! Big gold star for you and your coop! The girls both look quite plump and healthy - good to see when they've come from an intensive farming background. More photos of Vikki and Elaine (the hens, not the aunties!) please! Oh, and don't forget the obligatory photo of the first egg they lay for you!

How GREAT Daron! (And your little boy is very cute.) Hats off to someone else who does their building projects in the kitchen.

Vikki and Elaine look very happy.

well thank you all for your flattery you know what that say. Flattery is better than battery LOL. I will be sure to keep you posted. Oh btw way the larger of the two chickens Elaine is very bossy with Vikki. No i did read somewhere that chicken have to establish a pecking order( no seriously stop laughing.) and Elaine wont allow Vikki to eat to near to her until she has had her fill. this has caused some confusion with Josh he tries to keep them apart and says " be nice to your sister - UNDERSTAND." very funny. prehaps someone can shed some light on this.

Do you build in ur kitchen to Diane. I used the dishwasher as a work bench to cut all the wood Lol.

Gday Daron, good work on the coop... I would be proud to live in it if I were a chook !!
As for building indoors... well I once re-built a V8 car engine in my lounge room, so its thumbs up from me, lol.

My DH used to do his motor bikes inside when we lived in the barn. This house has five steps up to the door so then he had to build a big garage at ground level.

Daron, have you tried giving the girls a separate dish each?

Yep, chickens have a pecking order. For the first few days / weeks, both hens will probably seem to be getting along brilliantly...then all of a sudden one will begin pecking the other.

This is nothing to worry about, it's all completely normal and will probably calm down in a few days (although Vikki will always be pecked by Elaine, that's just the way it is). Elaine is simply teaching Vikki some ground rules, for example Vikki will have to wait until Elaine has eaten her food first, Elaine will probably get go to bed before Vikki, and Elaine will choose the best place to dust bathe etc...

As long as there is no blood / obvious signs of injury everything should be okay. There's more info in this thread! here, about halfway down the page...hope this helps! :)

    Keeper of the hens

Is there a nest-box or area where the hens can lay their eggs in privacy?

The coop looks really professional - well done! :)

Thats right, I have done so Daron. What do you do about the infernal saw dust? That last thing I built was an eight foot by two foot window seat with two/four wood panels. It took forever to rid the room of saw dust after the job was done... :P

You leave a loose floorboard. Sweep sawdust into a pile, lift floorboard....et voila! No more sawdust. Replace floorboard.
