    Keeper of the hens

A collection of myths, truths and ghost stories about Keele uni and the surrounding area...we all thought these were very interesting, so thought i would share! The one about the library moving and the underground tunnels are the only ones i know that are definitely true...who knows about the others ;)

    1) There are a network of tunnels beneath the gardens of Keele Hall.

    2) Troops were stationed at Keele during WWII.

    3) Keele Hall is supposedly haunted by the ghost of Lady Sneyd, whose husband disapproved of her vanity and cut off her hands to stop her preening herself.

    4) Keele is the only university in Britain to be attached to a village rather than a city.

    5) Satanic carvings on trees in the woods (which woods..there are lots at Keele)

    6) Oh and the library is supposed to be slipping down hill cos of the weight of the books in it...(okay so it's not because of the weight of the books, but it really is moving!)

    7) Chancellors building is built in 3 different sections because it's built over mines and the theory was that if the ground was to give way then only part of the building would fall down which would save money, oh and lives too!

    8) Keele became a state in the 1980s. Keele students sent of a letter of state recognition to every nation in the world, it got one response, from Cuba. This one response meant that Keele University became its own seperate state away from the UK, literally within the borders of Keele Uni was a completely seperate country...This lasted all of 3 days until HM Army invaded Keele University and conquered the state to get it back into the UK. Apparently there were APCs rolling up and down the union road (going past the library!)

    9) Barnes M block collapsed when they were building it as it was built on a mine shaft.

    10) The trees at Keele are numbered-try and find number 1!

One of our local cemeteries has just been declared a NO-Go area as it is riddled beneath by old mine workings.

Number 9 sounds like an episode of Family Guy where Peter's house isn't on the map so he declares it a state called Petoria!

    Hahahah!
"Keele University is one of the top drinking institutions in the country. We consume more units of alcohol per student than any other uni (or something like that. I can't remember exactly, I was pretty drunk at the time...). However, the progress of drinking at Keele is constantly hindered by a severe higher education problem. Many students are troubled by degrees, symptoms of which can include essays, lab reports, exams and, in some extreme cases, dissertations.

This group is dedicated to combatting the HE epidemic with a variety of measures, such as all-nighters, bar crawls and drinking games. Please, do your bit to stamp out higher education at our uni, and make Keele the very best drinking institution it can be."

They must need a lot of mental health nurses!

My friend is the complaints manager for our local mental health trust - she has some real WEIRD complaints I can tell you. They frequently get people threatening to bomb them, kill them, etc, and if they leave their name they get sectioned for it!!!! Once, someone sent a white powder through the post and the building had to be evacuated. It was taken away for testing in case it was, er, can't remember, but something nasty that was being talked about in the press at the time. They were told the results would be back in a week and to go back to work. When she looked up the powder they were testing for on the internet it said you have to have treatment within 12 hours or its fatal!!! (It turned out to be talcum or flour - nothing dangerous thankfully!)

There was a snippet on Three Counties Radio about a dozy secretary who opened a Jiffy bag the wrong way so all the stuffing came out; she screamed 'ANTHRAX!' and the whole station shut down for a bit while police etc. were called...!

I know a few like that! My friend was very calm about it, sort of "oh dear ladies, looks like there's something in this envelope that'll need reporting. Does someone want to give the director a call and get her to pop in? No reason why she shouldn't have a dose too". (She didn't actually let the director in the office, just spoke to her on the phone - honest!)
