    Keeper of the hens

Someone recently contacted hencam to ask if we could give two quickly-growing chicks a new home. We are always open to helping someone out with chicken problems, but as the person wasn't sure whether the chicks were male / female we asked if they would be able to send us photos first.

Well, unfortunately it would appear that at least one of the chicks is male. The white & black i suspect is a female, but as we are unsure of the ages we are not 100% sure. They are both very beautiful chicks who are exceptionally tame, and would make very loving chickens. See photos below if interested:

    chickens together
    Here they are together

    boy chick?
    Beautiful boy

The chicks appear to be mixed breeds, but their guessed heritage is a Silver Sebright (bantam breed) for the female, which explains why she is so pretty ;) And possibly an Old English Game Bantam for the male...However, having said that i may be completely wrong and they might not be bantams at all :P

Anyway, they're pretty and friendly, what more do you need to know?! If anybody is interested, please either email my dad, me or even leave a whisper on this thread (i would say leave a post, but it would probably just get swallowed up by the countless off-topic posts that are bound to follow ;) )

    Thank you!

    All right then.
Put them on a raft for an hour, meanwhile paper their coop with pics of Dianne's place. At the same time Dianne can have big posters of the pair all over hers.
A webcam might help to complete this ecological solution.

Yes, yes, YES!! My darling little hen. But she/he will need company. Do Silkies need to be with other little chickens, Lynn? :D

I can't believe the two sweeties who are the reason for this thread are still homeless. How can that possibly be? Sob.

Bringing this thread to life with a request.
A couple on our local freecycle group (Leeds) are asking about where to purchase some hens and a coop.
Not being an owner myself I thought I would ask you experts, please.

they still have no home! how much bigger did they get after the orginal pictures? If I was close enough I would have loved to give them a loveing forever home with me. MY sikies are very sociable and seem to crave the company of other chickens. they all so are very people oreinted too! they follow me about the garden like puppys.I bath them befor i have guests over and blow dry them so they are at thier softest and fluffyest. they seen to like it so much they all like to raise thier wings for me to dry under thier wings. they are my little ambasadors for silkies and chicken as pets.

Ollie, couple of places that spring to mind that are in/near Leeds, but it might also be worth considering taking in some ex-batterys - BHWT would probably be able to help but it could be as simple as asking a local farmer...

Anyway, Elmley farm shop is near Leeds/Bfd airport and usually have chickens for sale (make sure you stress 'live' ones as they brought out a frozen one when we asked!) - it's where we got Milly from.

The other place I can think of is just before you get to the A1/A64 roundabout from the A64 out of Leeds - there's a place that sells meat and honey etc but I think they also sell pets such as bunnies, ducks, hens etc.

We got the original girls from a nice old guy who raised hens and found his details from asking someone who had a 'free range eggs for sale' sign outside his house...

And Frogdust, I can't believe nobody ever wanted the 2 girls either - they were so pretty and friendly they made a gorgeous pair. I hope they are ok now wherever they are.

As for coop... plenty of options ranging from build-your-own to using a large rabbit-hutch (though that's not ideally suited and can work out as expensive as a 'proper' coop) - I would recommend a well-made and properly designed chicken coop as it will make life easier in the long run. I like these well designed and easy to clean coops.

Try your local petting farm too, that's where Milly came from! And like my dad said, t'other three were from the local farmer.
