    Wow, that's cold!

I have only seen one plane go from Birmingham Airport today - don't know if its open now. I walked over to Asda today and the snow was lovely and felt like walking on cotton wool! The only dodgy bit was outside Asda itself - they'd thrown salt on the snow so it'd melted to slush, but that was very slippy! Don't know what the roads are going to be like tomorrow morning ...

Just heard another plane so maybe they've finally got the runways clear.

It started to snow here again at 2.45pm so we decided to go home. My colleague drives a BMW - rear wheel drive. Which means a waste of time in snow. Our car park is slightly downhill - may as well have been a mountain for her car. We tried for half an hour and in the end gave up and parked it again, and she called her husband to get her. They tried for another hour before giving up again. I left the car park at 3.30 and got home an hour and a quarter later - usually takes 25mins in rush hour. Horrible. I'm going to work from home tomorrow.

Snowed a fair bit this morning here in Biggleswade and also in Milton Keynes but it is quite slushy now.
Hope it stays like that and carries on melting.

Trevs Mum..I'd rather have the 27C and perfect then what I have now. I was not made to cope with snow. :face-smile:

compacted snow and ice on the road. The usual time taken to get to work. I'm getting used to inching my way to work every day...and the day I get to drive at 70 mph will feel like I'm on a race-track.
It even stopped melting so now it's just freezing and turning into an ice-rink.

Interesting and scary footage Ronald. We saw some of this footage here tonight on the news (Tuesday evening Australian time) and the rivers are still rising, with more rain expected too. You can see how the water flows faster and faster and lifts the cars like toys.

Lives have been lost as they apparently had no warning it would be so bad. The devastation to property, homes and animals is just awful. We live in a country of extremes but this is crazy. Now Brisbane itself, the capital of Queensland is under threat, 50,000 homes have been on flood alert and the next 24 hrs will be worrying. It's going to be the worst floods the state, if not the country has ever seen.

I have a friend who went up to visit her family in Mackay in Queensland and now is stuck up there with daughter in law. Her son and grand children are stuck further down on the Gold Coast and cant get back up to their home.

We have had drought conditions for years in many areas of Australia and now this.

It was a bit cooler here today with a litte bit of soft rain. I managed to get out into the veg garden and sort it out a little bit. I have not been able to do much as my back has been so bad so every thing has been neglected. Glad to say my back is much improved now so although I am being very careful at least I can do a bit here and there.

It has been mega windy here today and we have had some vicious rain showers as well. I mentioned earlier I put our heating on for a few hours, I was shaking with the cold and I don't usually feel the cold.

I have been making fat and seed, fir cones for the birds and a squirrel has turned up and nicked three of them and taken them away !!! It looks like it is starting its winter stash a bit early this year. I will have to find another fir cone tree next time we are out and about.

What do you do with the fir cones? We have a tree not far away and my granddaughter is obsessed with bringing cones home, but I end up binning them as I don't know what to do with them. (I'd happily make them for the squirrels - I don't get many little birds here!)

High winds again today. Son-in-Law is a radio "ham" and has a tall antenna, he's had to drop it down today for safety.
We also had some sharp rain, with hail in it. That gave me chance to hang out of the bedroom window and wash the conservatory roof, which is nice clear glass, unlike the modern ones that are polywhatsit and opaque.

Got a friend with an open fire, Kate? The cones look pretty in the empty grate and s/he can burn them once winter draws/drawers on...

I always used to do that CC when I had an open fire, They look pretty as they burn also.
I only managed to get some tiddly little cones today, but will sort you out with the recipe Kate. You may find that they will encourage the birds into the garden. My birds love them and wont touch the bought ones unless the home made ones are empty.

Don't know anyone with an open fire CC. My in-laws did have, but they've put fires in them.

Thanks NN, I can take Caitlyn with me to collect some at the weekend. She'll love that!

It will be a real nice little thing to do together Kate, it doesn't take long either and she will be able to learn the birds as they come to feed. I put the instructions in a separate thread so we can add other ideas as they come along.

I suspect they will be stolen by the squirrel but I am hopeful that eventually the little birds will realise there is food available that they can get but the pigeons and magpies can't!

Boiling! I was melting on the dog walk, and the dog kept showing off by swimming in all the water to cool down. I kept trying to get him to shake near me

Red, it is time you learned an important lesson re dog ownership.
RULE 1: A wet dog will only shake him/herself by a squealy woman in white jeans and unsuitable walking shoes.
