All ok with us here but there was a bush fire yesterday only 15 minutes from where we stayed for new year in the cottage in Daylesford (at a holiday camp and luckily the teenagers who were staying there are ok but did not have time to evacuate, it moved so fast). I am glad we came home before the nasty heat, it's the hot winds that make things so dangerous too.
We just cant belive how bad things are in Tasmania as it's not a place we easily associate with bush fires but they can and do happen from time to time with the 'right' conditions.
Just to give you an idea of our crazy weather patterns, low to mid twenties all week but 39C on Thursday just to throw a hotty into the mix.

My rabbits can be a real sod to put to bed as well CC. I do bribe them with tasty morsels of parsnip/apples or such and one will usually come and get in as soon as she hears the rustle of a plastic bag. I leave the other one while I go close the hens up and she is normally in worried all the best goodies have gone. Mind you it doesnt work all the time especially if it is tipping it down with rain or they know I am in a hurry !!!

My friend works in Intensive care and was telling me yesterday that if it snowed to much they would be obliged to stay over night and get charged £19 for a bed to sleep in. They have also been warned that if they dont get into work using the weather as an excuse they can loose their jobs. They were told if you cant drive in or get bus then you have to walk even if you are late.

I got into work this morning without any problem, but getting home was another matter! Took me an hour to do a 20 min drive. Roads are terrible. Motorways had been gritted but the volume of snow negates that. I can't believe they don't have a plough on the front. Several of the local main roads haven't been gritted at all.

Sounds lovely with a real fire CC. I always used to love my fire and never minded cleaning out the ashes. We used to collect pine cones to decorate the hearth during the summer months and then use them for kindling come winter. How lovely that Eric got a heater for your chickenses. Mine have loads of clean litter but still prefer to roost except that is for Princess Leya and she sleeps in the nest box as befits her title I guess !!!!

Mine are all stir crazy too, but I don't really want them to go out when they're coughing and sneezing, but appreciate they need some fresh air. Jenson goes out for hours at a time which frustrates me when it's so cold.

We had such a lot of snow - I left work before midday and it took an hour to get home instead of the usual 20 mins. It's thawed a lot more than was expected. Not sure when the next fall is due.

    Ah, the sherry CC.

Yours seems to be in a green bottle, mine's in blue, a most wondrous blue.

Bristol Cream, "Granny Fuel", "Mother's Milk" (they pop a bit in the babe's bottle).

I keep the bottles and apart from the ones that make the "Bottle Tree" and the old dustbin full of Bluebottles, they are destined to have their necks chopped and turned into vases. Oh dear, another job not getting started....

Bottle trees have their roots in Congo culture. Slaves hung blue bottles from trees and huts as talismans to ward off evil spirits. It is believed that the spirits become mesmerized by the colors of the bottles in the sun. Once they enter the bottle, they can't find their way out
If you listen closely when the wind blows, you can hear the moans of the trapped spirits in the bottles.

It might be the moans of the hungover soul who drank the contents! The blue bottles are gorgeous, aren't they? But I prefer the contents of the green ones! :D
There used to be a shoe tree in Stokenchurch where someone chucked a trainer up into the branches and it caught there. Then everyone else did the same; it was wonderful. Then the miserable gits at Wycombe District Council cut it down..:face-sad:

Thats very interesting Ollie. I have seen the bottle trees but didnt know anything about them. I was reading an article eons ago where they tie a bottle in a pear tree and tuck a small twig bearing a tiny pear on it into the bottle. When the pear is fully grown they snip off the pear take the bottle down and then top up the bottle with some sort of booze. I can not remember what sort it was now.

It used to be a druggies sign shoes tied by laces and thrown up on to over head wires maybe thats what they thought it was CC

Wouldn't that be such fun. We used to make wine years back. Still got the demi-johns in the shed and the cork puter inner gadget. Come to think of it we still got a bottle of cherry brandy we made in the cupboard that must be about twelve years old now. I remember that unbeknown to me G/North put the brew in the airing cupboard to get it going with the warmth in there and we had a viewer come to see the house. They asked what was in the cupboard and when I opened the door this mega strong waft of fermenting brew nearly knocked us over. Oh my word I was so embarrassed and there was my beautifully laundered and arranged bedding and towels all needing laundering again. I could have killed him quite cheerfully. I must have scared him as that was the last we ever made. He labled it hell fire cherry brandy as well !!!!!

It's amazing they survived Lynn. Can horses get traumatised by things like that? I just wondered if they'd find the journey more difficult because of it. How are you feeling? Are you recovering? Give our love to Don when you speak to him and let him know we're thinking of him.

Everything went fine and I got the horses home. Yes, Kate horses can get traumatized by a bad experience like they had. We did have a hard time getting the little gelding back into the trailer, no trouble getting him to unload once we got home. LOL

We've had a slight thaw today. Tabby had a close call while waiting at the door to be let in - a pile of snow and ice came off the roof and she just managed to jump out of the way at the last second. A couple of ice chunks were very big and could've caused her some harm. The wind chill is terrible.

Have just been watching the news and it's heartbreaking seeing the farmers trying to dig their sheep out of 6 foot deep snow. Can't help wondering if they couldn't have brought them in, but I suspect it's not that easy.

Omg it's SO warm! We hit 25*C here today and couldn't walk Zoey until this evening in case the heat made her sick. It's too warm to sleep in this house and tomorrow it's supposed to hit 27*C...I can't wait for autumn and winter!

Feels like this one has been such a hot summer!

We did get a break from the heat here yesterday and we got a lot of rain..it helped with the big wildfires up in the mountains..the biggest fire is now 50% contained it's burned over 250,000 acres so far, wiped out a town and 150 homes. It was great not to smell the smoke in the air.

Yes, it's really hard to sleep and the cats are suffering too. Not going to moan about it though - I hate being cold! It's awful to hear about the wildfires Lynn - puts the heat and suffering in context doesn't it.

Kitten has just come in covered in dirt and dust - she's filthy! She only went out 20 mins ago and was clean as a whistle then. She must've rolled in dirt somewhere. Meow Meow was dirty last night, and Ting Tong's feet are dirty tonight. Don't know where they are going.

They've found a nice dust bath somewhere, like the chickens do. Tuppence's white bits are grey too!

At least it's not a 'poo bath' like Zoey enjoys...have lost count of the number of poo dollops she rolled on during our last walk :rolling:

Why do they do it though CC? I thought birds did it to get rid of pests, or is it to keep cool?

Played the organ at a wedding today but they were lucky with the showers; it poured while they were in church, sun came out for photos in the church yard and gave them time to get to the reception...then it poured again!

It's getting warmer now. I can spend more time in South facing conservatory, lovely.
I do love the sun. Unfortunately I have developed the old person's Rosacea, so have to keep sun off face = hat or sun screen.

I like sunny days as long as there is a strong breeze...too warm and dog walks become horrible. And our house is far, far too warm.

Checked BBC weather last night to plan Zoey's pre-bed walk as she doesn't like rain. No rain in sight. Took her out an hour or so later and it was spitting...ten minute's into the walk and it was torrential! So she slept with us last night...thanks BBC weather!! :sarcastic:

Open a window at the front and a window at the back and let the breeze go through the house.

Do you think opening one THEN the other would work? Kasper-idiot-dog ( :001_tongue: ) barks when the window is open at the slightest noise, so I was thinking we could shut him in one room whilst the window is open in the other, then swap  ...mind you if I begin counter conditioning early, and ply him with long lasting PB Kongs maybe he'd be too distracted to notice!! :rolling:

(in case the pics are too small, it's constant rain, all day!)

Wow Lynn it's warm there! Still rainy here...all of Zoey's walks have had to be cut short because it starts raining whilst we're out (when we're furthest from home of course!) even though none has been predicted...supposed to be sunny tomorrow, that would be nice

CC, the term "Till May be out" refers to the blooming of May blossom (Hawthorn tree) not the month.

After we'd finished walking the dogs today we went and bought some stuff for a BBQ; we've never used ours and the sun was cracking the flags! We start walking home, and by the time we get back (not even 15 minutes later!) the storm clouds have gathered and it's threatening rain. *curses*
