Happy new year from me and my lot too. Caitlyn is here for the night - I was scammed. Danny said they were going out but they haven't, but still left her with us. No sleep for me tonight - just as well with all those fireworks - I hear her breathing and have to keep making sure she's OK!

I hope 2009 is a good one for everyone!

    Happy New Year everyone.
I just got unbelievably confused because I was reading posts in another Happy New Year thread without realising they were dated Jan 1st 2008 not 2009. It got to Jan 2nd and I got really scared briefly because I couldn't remember New Year's Day.
I've calmed down a bit now.

I've heard of vegitarian bacon - I assume it tastes disgusting though. Sometimes I have a bacon and egg buttie.

Has anyone seen the eggs Sainsbury's sell - they are woodland eggs. I read an article on it through the Woodland Trust. The hens are free to roam through the woods, but how the devil does someone find the eggs after they're laid though?!

AND did anyone see the article in today's paper saying that the gov't insist that either we stop eating food that will make us fat or they'll ban it. I'm gonna starve to death!!!!!!!! I think they should have a set of scales at the checkout and as long as you're below your BMI you can purchase anything - cream cakes, frosties, the lot. I could buy it and run a black market (hoooo haaa haaa!) Er, then again, as someone who works in public health I'll just eat it all myself. Honest.

I don't like vegetarian bacon, tastes like rubber!
And the woodland hens lay their eggs in trees, they will make a nest then lay their egg, so i presume it will be quite easy to find the eggs once they have been laid. :)

Maybe the trees in the Sainsburys woodlands (not that I think there are woodlands that are all orange and Sainsburys logo-ed) could be coppiced so if hens did try to lay eggs in them they'd be nicely hand-height.

Hens don't lay in trees! ;) They like to roost up in tree branches for safety but can you imagine a great lummoxing hen carefully building a nest high in a tree then somehow managing to keep all the eggs it lays in there - and that's before you even think about the chicks which are running around the day after they're hatched!

The mental image made me chuckle though!

The term "woodland eggs" is just a fancy name for bog-standard free-range with some trees in their enclosure - you could say the same about our garden lol!

Doesn't even look that nice (they've buggered that ground up already!):

But it does look nicer in this one:

And it's a million miles away from battery so it's good, but another confusing term is just what the consumer doesn't need (battery, organic, soil association approved, woodland...)

Well, I like eggs, and on current options the woodland ones seem better than many of the others. I think (though I could be wrong) that the Woodland Trust gets a donation from each box sold (probably a penny!) so it'll help to keep the woods as wildlife areas rather than housing estates or office business parks. I hope.

Yep a sandwich..well..i guess. I imagine it comes from "buttering" the bread.

Also known as a "sarnie" but that would be a bit different, perhaps.

I imagine you could have a tomato sarnie but not a tomato butty...just guessing though...

I'm thinking a butty is for all those things that aren't really that good for you, but taste really great! Bacon butty, chip butty, artery cloggin' butty!

A butty is a northern term, primarily; although we always use it for bacon, strangely - probably the pleasing alliteration. More usual is 'sarnie' down south.
