Thanks CC ^_^ He is stunning little boy, and getting really brave now. He doesn't shy away anymore when people go near him, and he's quite happy to sit out for long periods of time.

We're travelling to a reptile shop in Leeds tomorrow (I think my dad's aim is to visit every reptile shop in the UK :D ) because i need to buy him a new hide - he is too big and fat for his corner one now :)

Yes, what would a snake think about? Cats is "where can I sleep?" Rats is "what's to eat". Dogs is "can we go for a walk now? How about now? Now?" So what would it be with snakes?!

Martin begs to differ. I'm quoting now: *Where are my servants? Who is going to carry me to where I sleep? Why is that spot over there dirty? Why is my food taster eating so much? Sigh, the help is worthless these days - I still have to clean myself.*

James = Oh god she is here again to disturb me, yep there she goes lifting me from my snug hiding place...right, I'll slither around for a few minutes to keep her happy, and then I am looking for somewhere nice and quiet and dark to hide!

Oh no. Really. How literal is that? Because I found a snake in the middle of the trail on our walk today. With a rather large lump in its middle and not moving. Because of James - I knew he was digesting. But in the middle of a trail. So I picked him up by the tail end and swung him into the bushes for his own saftey. Was that wrong?

    Keeper of the hens

No you did the right thing Diane, he'll be safer in the bushes than in the middle of a trail! Do you know what type of snake he was? Just be careful please (unless it was a corn or king - they're harmless, but I've no idea what scary venomous snakes you have over there)

Snakey was probably soaking in the sun to aid digestion (they need heat to help their stomach acids), and if they feel threatened or stressed they will regurgitate their meal so they can then flee rather than try and get away whilst bloated with food. Just moving him out of the way shouldn't have done anything though.

It's quite serious if a snake regurgitates as they are quite primitive animals they need a couple of weeks for the stomach acids to recover before they can eat again, and it can trigger more regurgitations (three usually means a dead snake).

James regurgitated the first day we had him - the pet shop didn't say he'd only eaten the day before (probably more interested in a sale), and with him becoming slightly chilled on the trip home and the stress of moving, he regurgitated... Thankfully he's been fine since (growing like a weed!)

Oh - James LOVES his new hideout! :D

Neil, thanks. I'm very relieved. Nothing like trying to help and hurting instead... It was a garter snake. I live in a strange place where there are no deadly poisonous snakes or spiders... Can you believe it Julie & Trev?? But, I grew up in Northern California with rattlesnakes and Black Widow spiders all over the place. And Tarantulas - although aren't really poisonous.

Re nights....Yes they sure are CC, I get so tired sometimes I hardly know how to put one foot in front of the other. I do push myself though as I don't want to sleep during the day. when I crash out totally some nights, that is a real bonus. I do tend to read as that makes me sleepy, but by the time I have got back upstairs ....ding and I am wide awake again, Ha ha still thats just one of the crosses I have to bear things could be worse for sure.

It would be the other way around CC :-) Dogs, cats (and maybe even chickens!) pose a serious threat to them, they're such beautiful snakes and one of our only few native species and are pretty rare now too (and are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act). The only need to eat 2 or 3 frogs to last them the whole season, they're amazing animals.

Yours must have been adolescents - apparently they can grow to over 6 foot!

He's finally done it! Happened last night I think, he looked a bit strange (scared me as his face looked different somehow - possibly may have been where he had been rubbing it to get the slough started).

Anyway this morning I checked (ever hopeful!), and there it was stuck in his plants, a nice fresh shed. The last half was all wrapped inside itself so I spent a few minutes unwrapping it to check if his spectacles had come off properly, but I think the head bit is elsewhere... :\

Anyway, I had the little guy out and he looks amazing - we need to get pics tonight, and he was very well behaved too considering I'd just woken him up! He's actually bigger than I remembered - his head and neck are growing nicely!

He'll need feeding too as it's been 12 days and although they can go ages without food I bet he's ready for his next meal...
