I have discovered late this evening that one of my hens (Pumpkin) seems to be egg bound. I can feel an egg almost at the vent but she doesn't seem to expel it. She is standing with her rear in the air and looks like like she is trying to sleep. I think that she could have been like this for best part of the afternoon as we have been out for the day. I have oiled the vent area with olive oil and brought her in the warm for a while by the fire but still no success! I have had to put her back in the run as she asked to go back out with the other hens and I don't know what to do next to help her. If anyone has any advice or ideas please let me know as I hate seeing her like this.

    Keeper of the hens

Are you sure she is definitely egg bound? It's quite serious so it needs to be treated as quickly as possible.

You've done the right thing by oiling her vent. Keep her as calm and quiet as possible.

Another technique is to put her in a warm (not hot) bath just so it covers her vent. Leave her in there for around five minutes and wrap her in a warm towel in a dark / dim room.

Keeping her in a dark room will stop her producing another egg, because we really don't want that to happen! You can try massaging her gently where you feel the egg too, and oil again.

Keep her in a dark room, lube her vent, you can give her a small amount of oil to drink too, and give her frequent warm baths.

Let me know how she goes on ~ good luck and send her my love

Thanks Red I will certainly try the warm bath thing and see if it helps and give her a little oil to drink.

Will let you know how she gets on if no joy by tomorrow I will try taking her to the vet, I think.

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Good luck with her, hopefully the egg will have popped out by tomorrow, but if not hope the vet can help :001_smile:

Pumpkin managed to lay an egg this morning but then went out to the hen house and layed a soft shelled egg approx 1/2 hr later. She has now gone back to the laying box and is sitting in there. Any suggestions what I should do next I am going to book a vets appoint for later and see if they will give her a booster calcium jab, to see if this will help or not if she is lacking in calcium. Do you think this is a good idea or any other ideas would be much appreciated.

    Keeper of the hens

I think the second egg was shell-less because she was interrupted whilst forming it (the shell is the last thing to be created obviously)...

I think if her first egg was ok then her calcium levels should be ok (but it's probably not a bad idea to offer oyster grit or a calcium jab just to make sure)

Hopefully it might be 'just one of those things' but there must be some reason that caused this, whether it was a scare or some kind of deficiency, hopefully the vet will be able to give you more info, but keep an eye on pumpkin, offer lots of good nutritious food and watch out for unusual behaviour.

    Good luck!

    Keeper of the hens

    Hurray! :cheer:

She should hopefully be fine now, CW, I am SO relieved for you!!

It's probably a good idea to take her to the vets just in case ~ wow i sure was worried for Pumpkin, we had Libby die due to being eggbound and it was nasty. I'm glad she got the eggs out.

Her calcium levels should be fine, but the vet can just check for no more eggs or any other signs of illness, and give her a jab if they want. Well done CW :)
  1.
back from the vets, although she seems a lot better now. Much more her usual self. The vet gave a jab of something (not sure what, but I'm CW will explain :) ) anyhow will keep you posted.

    Thanks for your help :)

Hi everyone thanks for your concern, Pumpkin is almost back to her normal self again today and eating anything and everything she can. The vet thought that she probably wouldn't lay for a few days as she had got rid of any build up of eggs she had in almost one go, but I think she has layed a normal egg today. The vet gave her a jab that would help her to eggspell any left over eggs she might have. He also said that it was right of me to act and take her to him quickly as it means that she had more of a chance.
Anyway thanks again everyone its a great help having people here to help when I have worries or concerns when I have worries about my girls. I no longer feel alone with any fears that I might experience.

Hi everyone just a quick update on Pumpkin, she is doing fine now and back to her old self producing her daily egg for me, which of course is eggcellent! So glad that she's back to normal. Many thanks to all of you for your kind help and support as in the past with some of my previous hens I have felt quite helpless and alone with no one to share problems with when they have been poorly.

Thanks Hencam for being there for people like me.

Yes that would be lovely, perhaps we could visit you sometime and you can visit us.

Will speak to CD and sort out when we can come over and visit you, livia and onion. I will bring pictures of Blossom, Pumpkin, Bluebell and Snowdrop for your girls to see and maybe they will become peck/pen pals or something.
