See if there are any Battery Hen rehoming schemes nearby, then you get lovely new hens but also save a life too...

Failing that, try local farms, or asking where you see 'free range eggs for sale' signs where they get theirs from...

Some garden centers even sell chickens (not sure I agree with that, but...)

Aww Sara, didn't mean to upset you. :) But on the bright side, less people are buying battery eggs, free range is getting a better press now, and organisations and people are giving loving homes to ex-battery hens.

You might not need to steal them from the farmer - if you ask him, he'll probably be pleased to sell you some - even if you just give him a fiver for them, it's still more than he'd get from the slaughter house (as they'd only end up in dog - or baby - food).

And then when you have so many lovely eggs that you have to give them away to friends and neighbours, you can mention how the free-range eggs taste so much nicer than battery ones, and the conditions the poor battery hens have to endure, and so more people get the message and start buying free-range - it's a win/win situation!

    That's what i do,do.
I get about 40 eggs a week. My son growing in my tummy don't let me eat eggs at the moment,

So friends get them. Neighbough get them and make my children cakes in return.

I didn't know that chickens ended up in pet food/baby food.

I thought slaughter houses just turned them into cheap chickens that they sell at asda/tesco.

Its a very upsetting site. My hubby did get me off the pc last night as it did break my heart. as there the hens i have..But im glad in a way that i know now i can help, I have a lot of people at my sons school who want to get chickens, so now i can tell them the best way to do it..

Has anyone seen the new add on tv. HAPPY EGG!! With the hens on the bike.. Love that advert.

Yep, try BHWT, local farms / petting zoo's sell chickens...we got Milly (a light sussex) from a local petting farm for £5, and she should cost around £20 as she's a pure breed...

There are websites that sell chickens, too, but don't know them...look for Silkie breeders online, there's bound to be some!! :)
