    Keeper of the hens

    Poland are trying to delay the ban on cruel battery hen cages, which is due to be introduced on the 1st Jan 2012.

    What's worse is that DEFRA want to weaken this ban, to allow battery eggs to be still produced and sold within the country of origin.

    That's not a ban!

    Yesterday the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers rejected Poland's attempt to delay the Europe-wide ban on barren battery cages. As a result, the ban is still due to come into force as planned in 2012.

    Thank you to the 10,214 dedicated supporters who lobbied the UK government by sending emails, post cards and letters - once again, you have shown that we can get things done for farm animals when speaking with a united voice

    Now don't get me started on the illegal whaling that Japan persists in carrying out. We see a lot about it in the media here as it's done in our waters far too often. Our gov has made plans to take them to international court if they dont stop by deadline.

    im a bit scared. They have never been outside. They will not of had any love.what if they are nasty.as my girls love a good hug.the lady said that they are just fed on cheap hen pellots.so i'll have to watch there diet, they will be in badshape. She said get 3. I said i wanted2.but she said better get3 as if 1dies then other1 be on her own. So im gettin 3. Been trying to think of 3names4them.one has to be Annie.from the film.she had a poo start in life,then everything was good in the end. [ so any names?

    Sara they will get picked on by the others for a while but it will pass and they will no ware they belong with each other!
    And as for names well what do they mean to you after the loss of Ginger.
    It could be Hope,Buttercup,Freedom,Candy,Gina,Cinnamon,Ethel,

    Sara, don't worry about them not being friendly - it seems with most ex-bats that they are desperate to find as much love and affection as they possibly can, especially if you befriend them with treats! :tongue:

    Eva, for example, adopted me as her 'mummy' three days after we found her. The first day when we caught her, she was screaming and terrified of all human contact. By the third day she was asleep on my leg and following me about everywhere. She even let me pick her up, cuddle and kiss her. Milly was insanely jealous!

    They probably will be in quite poor condition, so a little extra love is needed, especially when you first get them. Another thing, they won't know what treats are, so will need to be introduced to them slowly and you might need to show them how to eat the treats. Eva didn't know what a tomato was, and it wasn't until i ripped it into tiny shreds and dropped it in front of her repeatedly that she tried some :bigsmile:

    I'm sure you will love them, and pics will be very much appreciated!

    I like the name Annie too, if i think of any more i'll be sure to share.

    tomato! Mine dont eat them! Yes a small treat every now n again. How do i show them how to eat them.my hubby said it will be them pickin on mine.As they are from the geto! Can wait. Im goin to keep them away from mine for about a week.Then i'll just open their cage.they can come out if they want.

    A woman brings eggs in to work to sell. She tells people they're from her neighbours chickens. She lives next door to a battery farm. I keep telling people but they'd rather have cheap eggs. I'd rather pay an extra few pence and buy something more ethical.

    When the ex-bats have gotten to know you a little and are calm around you, just rip any treats up into little pieces and drop them repeatedly in front of them. Or you can mix them up with their pellets.

    Eva was never aggressive towards anyone or anything. Milly was absolutely horrible to her (only time I ever got cross with Mills!), but Eva was the softest lump ever!

    I couldn't remembered where I'd posted this so thanks Sara - I have a sort of update today.

    We've had a move around at work so that our secretary can sit with us. She said today that she had forgotten to get her eggs from 'this person', and went on to say they are free range. I said "are you sure?" and she said "yes, they're from her neighbour". When I told her that the neighbour runs a battery farm (or barn eggs) she was horrified as had been led to believe they were pet hens/proper free range etc. She is going to ask to find out for sure and will let me know.

    I wonder how much you can trust someone who can so easily deceive?
    What else could she be saying that manipulates the truth?

    It is the same as a health professional telling me to drink 8 glasses af water daily. That person has obviously not read the research done on this, so makes me doubt other "advice" they may give.

    You know how sometimes you just get that 'feeling' that you don't like someone but don't know why? That explains how I feel about her.

    Advice changes like the weather sadly. I take it all with a pinch of salt (we do still need a bit of salt in our diets even though we're told not to!! LOL!)
