I watched a film today that made me cry . I Am an Animal is a documentary by British born Ingrid Newkirk, the co-founder of PETA. Among the horrors she showed was an undercover film crew who got jobs at the Butterball Turkey plant in Springdale , Arkansas . One of the sick things they caught on film was a pervert sexually abusing a hen turkey right before she was killed. That nut shoved his gloved finger into her v_g_na and movrd it in and out for several seconds while he hooped and hollered like it was really funny. I lost my taste for flesh when I was a little girl growing up on the farm. Anything that remotely causes another life to suffer wrenches my soul. There was something on tv not too long ago about two red pigs who escaped the slaughter house in England . It was cute.I laughed until the film went on to show how some pigs are like the batterie hens and live their entire lives on a steel floor. Straying from the subject and on a happier note , we have In Defence of Animals , a humane shelter. The director is Doll Stanley and she and another lady are on a trip to Colorado and on out West in a rented truck with 20 cats and 40 puppies in pet carriers . They are going to find good homes for them , hopefully.

Intensive farming is truely cruel, barbaric and unnecessary, purely driven by greed. There was an item in the news a while ago of a big company here where workers were filmed kicking a live turkey around like a football - the 'management' denied any wrongdoing citing an "isolated case - the individual has been reprimanded" or something like that. I've also seen programmes where poultry are strung up by their feet to go through machines that cut their heads off. If they lift their head then the rest of the process happens to them while they're alive.

My mother-in-law was put on HRT a few years ago. She investigated the tablets and found they were produced from the urine of pregnant horses that were kept constantly pregnant for the production of the drug. The foals were removed immediately and frequently slaughtered (what would they want them for?) and if left with the mother she couldn't be inseminated again. She immediately threw her tablets away and went to the doctor demanding a humane alternative. He tried to fob her off at first but she said she'd rather not have any then, and he relented. Its all about profit.

At school I was an ardent anti-vivisectionist which my mom hated. She said if a doctor offered me a drug that'd been tested on animals to save my child's life I'd accept it. At the time I denied it, but having kids now I would do anything to save them. BUT I still think its completely unnecessary and do my best to buy non-animal products (if you get what I mean).
