    Keeper of the hens

So, since I was a little kid and not veggie, Refreshers (one of my all time favourite sweets!) have not been suitable for veggies due to them containing gelatine - crushed up animal bones.

You know the sweets, the little round brightly coloured ones that are all fizzy and nice?

Well, Lyle happened to buy some today, and the ingredients no longer have gelatine in them. And there was nothing else that seemed to be unsuitable for vegans. But at the same time nowhere on the packaging did it say suitable for veggies.

I emailed the Swizzles company last year to ask about lovehearts which didn't used to be veggie, and they emailed back saying yes they were now, and sent a list of all their other products and if they were vegan or not.

According to the list from November, Refreshers aren't veganable. I might bug them again, because their website (which is PANTS!) does state that they have a new recipe for Refreshers...

    Anybody know anything about this?!

Hi Red! It's true that Refreshers do have a new recipe. Not too sure whether they are suitable for vegans though.

Oooh so there is a chance the new recipe could be okay! I hope they are veganable because I'm all excited now! Didn't eat any tonight just in case, but have emailed them and will see if they get back in touch! Will let you know the results :D

    So...

We got an email back from Swizzle's, and discovered that although Refreshers bars are their product, Refreshers sweets are the product of Bassetts! After searching for a Bassetts website on the 'net, we realised they were a part of the Cadbury company.

So Lyle phoned customer services, was sent to another person from the Bassetts department, who gave him the number for the actual manufacturer's number. He phoned them, was put through to the technical department, spoke to them and, as they didn't know, gave them their email address.

We hope to be hearing from them soon

    Ah yes, the cochineal bit.
My dict says "Mexican red scale insect that feeds on cacti; the source of a red dye"
They tried to use a subsstitute in some food and drinks but it went maky and they had to go back to cochineal.
    So Smarties are not vegan!

    They have pink ones?!!!!!!!!!

Oh, hang on, Refreshers!!! The sherbet-y round sweets! I was thinking of the yellow chewy oblong things with sherbet powder in them. What are they called then?

Refreshers that I knew were largish tablets in a roll.

They fizzed and foamed as son as they went into your mouth.

Just had a giggling fit at the thought of myself with a Refresher and all the saliva I generate since my mini-stroke. Hilarious!

Yeah, that's why we found it so difficult at first ~ the refreshers bars are made by the Swizzles company, whereas refreshers sweets are made by Barratts!
