    Hi boohill,

    If there is fencing around the perimeter then I think you should be fine leaving the pop-hole open - as long as foxes / whatever can't get in overnight.

    The egg eating might be because they are 'there' and the hens are awake and looking for food, but the best cure is to collect them as soon as they are laid (not very helpful I know!)

    yea got fencing around3 square meters and the ark's in the centre. fox would do well to get i think. thanks . got to give it a go my friend leaves his open and he has a foxes den at the top of garden. Ithink the urban fox is more interested in fish and chips out the bin than digging for an hour

    If you think your chucks are bored, there are plenty of things you can do to amuse them...

    - add a mirror to their coop!
    - give them a football
    - lettuce, cabbage or broccoli heads are good and will keep them busy pecking for ages;
    you can also suspend them from the roof so they don't get dirty
    - hanging a small basket from the coop roof and putting treats in it will keep them amused for hours as they try peck them out

    As for egg eating, it could be that their nest box isn't dark enough - you could try making it darker by hanging a flap of sacking / material over the entrance of the nest box, but cut it into strips so they know they can still walk through. Hopefully that will stop your egg eating problem!
