We went to clean out the chickens this evening and they have started to lay. They must have been older than we thought when we got them as we did not have them down to be ready to lay until august. BONUS!!! however they are still on growers. Is it safe to eat the eggs? I am sure I read some where that it isn't.....what do you reckon.

Welcome chicken mama! Good luck with your hens - if you have any pictures we'd love to see them.

I don't own chickens so charge myself with asking all the stupid questions. What are growers?!

I'm sure one of the other forum members will be along later to answer your question, in the meantime make yourself at home and have a look around!

I haven't heard of that one Chicken Mama, but I should get them on to layers asap.

    Keeper of the hens

Growers pellets are what you feed young chickens after giving them chick crumb, but before starting them on layers pellets.

Are the growers pellets medicated, Chicken mama? (oh, :welcome: to the forum by the way!)

If they were medicated then I wouldn't recommend eating them at all; if not...it's up to you, but I'd still probably give them a miss! Switch them over to layers pellets over the course of a week or so, then give them a couple of weeks on the layers before eating any eggs...that must be so annoying to wait to eat the first eggs

Congrats on the first egg though, that's great news!

We had it the other way round with Milly; she was sold as a POL pullet, when in actual fact she was only 10 - 12 weeks old...we had a to wait a long time for that first egg!
