Good idea to have a special place for this, though; we have a lot of threads for separate animals, so it makes sense to put them in one place. Nice one, TBHC!

I just lost my all time favorite chicken Verdell to sour crop. I tried everything I could think of to help him, but lost him a couple of hours ago. I never had such a sweet rooster.

    My little Silkie rooster Verdell.

Thank you all, it means a lot to have friends who can understand how it feels to lose one of these special little pets. Most people just think of chickens as "dinner" and don't realise that they all have different personalities and can be so endearing that you just can't help but love them.

Rainbow bridge is a real source of comfort for rat owners Red. For some reason all the rat owners I know have heard of, and believe in, the rainbow bridge, and we all look forward to seeing our many pets there when our time comes. I've read the story many times and it makes me cry every time.

I lost one of my big EasterEgg hens yesterday to another Raccoon. She had gone back to the nest box and he was waiting for one of them to come back inside. Raccoons usually don't come around in the day time, so we had let the girls out and left the door open to the coop so they could come back in when they wanted. First Verdell and now Goldie, this is getting hard to handle.:face-crying:

He had a growth in his belly and his kidneys were dodgy. We'd arranged for the vet to come here on Thursday but he suddenly went downhill, and I was afraid he might be in pain so we took him in and the vet said that he wasn't in pain but was very tired and on the verge of organ failure so we did the deed. He just put his little head down and went to sleep. He's buried overlooking his footpath/kingdom. What broke my heart was that Tuppence brought a mouse in and laid it by where his dish used to be this morning.
Thanks for your kind thoughts, everyone.

I don't know if the thunder and lightning scared him into a fit/heart attack, or if whatever legged it over the wall had attacked/scared him. There wasn't a mark on him, bless him.

I have a question that I would be interested to hear people's views on if that's OK.

My brother called me this week to say our step-dad has died. I tried to summon up some sympathy but am afraid I couldn't - I wouldn't go as far as to say I hated him, but I didn't like him at all - he was draconian, cruel, dictatorial, and believed only his opinion was right. My brother is going to the funeral but I am not. I have been estranged from my mom for 26 years and she doesn't know that my brother and I found each other after losing touch for several years.

The decision not to go to his funeral was easy, but it has made me think about what I will do when my mom dies. She isn't a nice person, has never met my kids, didn't tell me that my nan had died until after she had been cremated and her ashes scattered (I was very close to my nan), and is a liar (she tells people that I cut myself off from the family because my brother and I fell out - none of that is true at all). My question is - when she dies should I go to her funeral? Part of me thinks I should (mainly to see that she really has gone!) but another part thinks it would be 2-faced as I have no feelings for her. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? If so, what did you do and do you have any regrets about the choice you made?

Eh, I think it's entirely your decision, and you should make whatever choice makes you feel most comfortable. Don't go because you feel you 'should' or have to, it's your choice you can do whatever you want, but if you did want to go for whatever reasons it's not two-faced (and what does it matter if it is?!)... *shrug* I'm never much good at stuff like this

Um, well if you go, you won't later regret NOT having gone. But you probably won't regret GOING, if you see what I mean. It's easier to regret NOT doing something. If it were me, I'd slip in late at the back and slip out again early. Then you don't need to see/speak to anyone and it's a private matter for you alone. You don't even need to tell anyone you were there. You then know that you were the bigger person as you were a dutiful daughter even if she wasn't a dutiful mother.

I was sort of thinking that way CC, but it'll be down in Burnham on Sea as that's where she lives now so it's not quite so easy. My brother is worried that she'll want to move back up here now - it's his worst nightmare! I'm trying to persuade him to ask her who my dad was, but he says he's tried before and she wouldn't say. I think she'll take that knowledge to the grave, just to spite me!

Blimey, i thought it was mandatory. Shows what i know! But that's terrible, Kate, a dreadful thing to do to someone.

That's her all over I'm afraid. Not sure what the rules were back in the 60s but currently the father's name is only put on the certificate if a) they are a married couple or b) both are present. For Danny to be on Caitlyn and Shaun's he had to go along when they were registered. I suppose it stops women naming men who know nothing about it!!

I've checked my birth certificate - the space for the father's details is empty. If I asked who he was when I was growing up she would refuse to tell me, and then imply that if she did and I went looking for him he'd be a drunken tramp that I would regret finding. My brother know's his dad's name but has never met him. My nan used to say that one of our dad's was married, and the other was a patient mom had nursed, but nan didn't like him at all so had told him to get lost and he did. Maybe that was my dad and my mom's assessment was right, but it'd be nice to know that for myself.

That's a terrible thing to do to someone, Kate. No wonder you're such a good mum yourself - it must have made you determined to be a proper mother.

Actually, you're right on target there CC. I worried for a long time that if I had a girl history would repeat itself (mother v daughter), but instead I just couldn't understand how or why she was the way she was. I suppose that's just how some people are. That's why I'm also determined to be the best grandma I can and will do as much as I can to support Danny seeing the kids and spending time with them. He misses them so much when they go back to their mom. Society seems to assume that there isn't the same 'bond' with fathers, and maybe that is true in many cases, but not with Dan. He is a very good dad!!

MY Victoria Peckham hen died this morning Poor little girl. I think she must have eaten something really bad for her as I have never seen such bad dose of sour crop. I will miss her as she was such a lovely bright little girl.

I feel real heart broken CC. I get myself into a right state when we loose a pet. I put a little bird fountain over her grave. The girls helped me dig it which was nice, even though I know they were just looking for nibbles really.:face-crying:

Do you remember I told you about Gareth, the deaf blind cat at the rehoming centre that was given a loving home 3 weeks ago? Last week they received a letter from his new owner saying how well he had settled and how much they loved having him.

Today I heard that he died this week. Apparently he had a seizure and by the time they got him to the vet they said it was too late and there was nothing they could do. I feel so sad. :face-crying: At least he had a good home for his final weeks. Here's a link to a picture of him.

Poor Gareth it was such a shame, just as his luck had changed. I am so pleased he had comfort during his last days. I bet his new people were devastated, I hope it doesn't put them off giving another cat a loving home.

NN, I'm so very sorry to hear about your poor little
Victoria Peckham. I do know how devastating it is to loose such greatly loved pets.

Kate, it was so sad to hear that little Gareth had passed away so soon after being adopted by his new family...at least he was happy for a short time. He looked so much like my dear little Chelsea it made me cry.

Gareth was a lovely boy, I'm sure he is whole and healthy up in heaven and making new friends. He touched all of our hearts - everyone who met him will remember him, as well as many that didn't get to make his acquaintance. Thank you all for caring.

Feeling so sad about Lynn's beloved mare Alberta, who has died suddenly. I came to hencam tonight in the hope that Lynn might be here too, but she's not on line.

Rest in peace, beautiful horse. You are deeply loved. <3

Alberta had a good life once she came here, but who ever had trained her had done it wrong, because she was head shy when she first got here. It took a couple of years working at it, before we could walk up to her with a halter in our hands.

Kate, she was fine when Don went out to give them hay, an hour later he went out to give them their grain and Alberta was standing there sweating like she had been hosed off. I called the Vet and she was here within 20 minutes, but Alberta had a tumor in her stomach that had burst and the only thing the Vet could do was put her down, she
    was in such horrible pain.
She was a Peruvian Paso and dappled Palomino in color.
