    Keeper of the hens

A quick update of why it's been so quiet at hencam lately (which I must apologise for)

It was my birthday earlier this month, and as it was the big four-oh, we decided to go on a little holiday (we hadn't been anywhere for aaages), the only trouble was we couldn't decide on where to go. Originally we planned to drive from California to Las Vegas but then Helen's car died so that put paid to that.

We ended up booking something much more modest, my mum said they'd had a really good holiday in Turkey some years ago in Marmaris, and that she'd found a cheap deal.

So we ended up going there, and (apologies if you like Marmaris), it was pretty dreadful - imagine the worst of Blackpool, but very hot, and you have pretty much what it's like. But also add scammers, con-merchants and other less than salubrious characters (attracted by the tourists) and you have an idea what it was like. If you want a kebab, or a full english breakfast for £1 then it might be for you; if you want to see unspoilt Turkish living and experience the culture - avoid!

Add to that they were having an unseasonally hot heatwave (pushing 40°c some days), and the fact I'm not very good in heat, it was a recipe for disaster! :-)

We did have a good time though (aside from getting threatened with the police as our own holiday rep tried to extort more money out of us!), and you can see our holiday pics on the new gallery page.

Aaaanyway, our building work looks like it's going to drag on for several more weeks (not actually the builder's fault - they've been great, but other frustrations)

Artisan who we bought the fire off have been dreadful - messing us about, we spent £1000 and they lost the order, then found it, then said you can't get that size, then someone else there said they can, and so it went on.

About 6 weeks later we're still waiting for the bloody thing.

And they said we need a new flue which will cost £1000+, and they recommend a company called fluetech (probably a sister company), who charged £40 just to come out and say "you need a new flue", and THEY'VE been completely rubbish too! Not getting back to us when they said they would, ignoring calls, unhelpful.

B&Q who ordered the wrong doors, then said they'd ordered the right ones, then said they'd take longer, and we still have no idea when they'll arrive. Poor builder can't fit them until they arrive, which looks like sometime next month at the moment...

To be honest we're completely stressed and fed up with it all, and the room is still no nearer completion as without the fire the builders can't patch up the plaster round it, then tidy up the other bits so we can finally decorate and start using it...

But I did have an ok birthday (I don't recommend flying out on holiday on your birthday, it's not the most enjoyable especially when the flight is delayed over 2 hours so you are stuck in an airport lounge with nothing to do!)

Sorry I'm moaning, but at least I'm at the right age for it!

I still need to fit the replacement moving cam - I sealed it against the weather this weekend so it should be ready to plug in and go, assuming everything goes to plan. More news as and when!

Well the photos of Turkey look really nice, a bit too hot for you though, and me too, crikey high 30's is bit too warm.
A shame there are always people around who want to rip you off Neil. Nice to get away but sometimes it makes one appreciate home a bit more doesn't it?
The scenery does look quite pleasanr from your room balcony.
renovations can be a nightmare with dealys and unhelpful tradies etc. We just had a new gas log fire installed and already there is a very loud rattle which of course wouldn't happen when the gas man came back to check. GGrrrr.
You will be very happy when all is finished and you can relax again, meanwhile grab a tinnie (as Trev would say) and chill. :cheers2:

Neil, sorry to read you have had a bit of an adventure in Turkey. I had a similar experience in Tenerife and as long as I live I will never set foot there again.
Hopefully all this will get sorted out soon.

Sorry to hear that your holiday wasn't quite to expectations Neil. Well done for making the best of a bad job and salvaging some fun from it all though.. The photo's are real good I enjoyed looking at them thanks for sharing them with us.
The building work in your house sounds horrendous at the moment but will be lovely when it is all finished. Lets hope it is all done before the real bad weather hits.

Wow - sky high stress levels!! Sorry about the holiday and all the problems with the house. It will get sorted eventually and I hope when it does you are able to forget this difficult time. B&Q are notorious for doing that sort of thing!
