That is an Aveling & Porter traction engine. We used to go to lots of steam rallies and knew some of the owners. One in particular had tractors and a huge threshing machine. There is a country fair in Leeds each year,it is a three day event, I take grand daughter out of school one of the days as an 'educational visit', usually the day Royalty comes so she can get a glimpse of them while they still are around too.

My Grandma once had a squirrel stuck to the side of her house...it was racing up and down but couldn't find a way to get back onto the roof, and was knocking all the stones off her wall. Eventually s/he managed to get back onto the roof, and never climbed the house again...stayed strictly in trees or on the bird house! :)

Yes, CC is right - I saw the aftermath not the actual 'hit' thankfully. I once saw a car hit a tiny bird. It was destroyed by the underside of the car - quite horrific.

There are forests all along the road I drive while on Whidbey. I drive with my thumb on the horn.

I think its because our roads are quite narrow in comparison to yours and the hedges / grass verges are often right 'there' so they dash out and no chance to avoid them.

Ah - we have people whose job it is to drive these huge mowing machines along our roadsides. So the grass, etc is often clipped back almost 5 feet. That helps immensely.

I daresay they clip a few animals too...:(
I have a deer whistle on the car which makes a high-pitched whistle and warns them of my approach.

I think the noise scares the animals off. My only worry is if a bird has nested next to the road. But that's a horrible selection for a nesting spot... I had a deer whistle for awhile but it frightened too many birds into ranger of my car. That doesn't happen with yours?

No...that's odd. Perhaps they're different; is it a block of plastic with 2 holes through it, about an inch by three quarters?

Yay, same thing. I don't know what the deal was. I just hit many more animals when I had some on my car. The minute I say that I realize that I drove like I was protected... Now I drive slower and have my thumb on the horn and am looking hard for any little creatures.

My Hubby "the bishop" shot a rat tonight on the lakeside. It somersaulted 3 times and ran off. Did it take a butt shot or head shot? we will know when the dog finds it! ha ha

Oh he would love that. Taking Chav shots should be legal! Little buggers! Or to ban them we should make wearing trakki bottoms and baseball caps in public illegal. And shell suits of course. And Burberry,

I'm very behind again but, going back to roadkill, we saw a dead badger on the road yesterday. It was massive, the first time i have seen a badger and it was dead at the side of the road :(
