Ronston is a juvenile Horsefield tortoise. His shell is currently about 2 3/4 inches across and he is about 2 years old, and can be expected to live anywhere between 40 - 70 years! I bought him with my birthday money and he is the cutest thing ever, wrinkly neck and all!

Today Ron has really come out of his shell (haha sorry, last one!). He has been exploring all over, and is the most active he has been yet. He discovered his food bowl and had a few mouth fulls of food, and when I lifted him in his water he had a drink.

On Saturday he gets his first wander around outside of his cage, which will be very exciting! :)

He still hasn't done a poo yet!

All pics of him so far:

    Thanks Shobhna ^__^

Some pics of him at feeding time!

We've made up a tortoise salad and are keeping it in the fridge and doling it out everyday. At the moment he has raspberry leaf, dandelion leaf and flower, grass, a tiny bit of cabbage and meadow hay.

He's done really well with his eating, we were told that after his move he may not feed for up to a week, but he ate the day after he arrived :)

Tortoise salad of the week (well, the next few days!):

    Grass
    Meadow Hay
    Nettle
    Field Thistle
    Raspberry Leaf
    Small amount of Cabbage

Gonna start making notes of what he eats each week, plus if anyone gets dragged to the forum by searching for 'tortoise food' on google they might find it useful :)

TM, we had to put rocks in the bottom of the plug hole on top of the plug so that he couldn't fall down there and drown! He's very ickle, bless him.

Kate, they can grow to be very affectionate, and usually love to have their heads and chins tickled :001_smile: They learn to recognise their owners' faces, but I'm not sure how good their hearing actually is!! Apparently tortoises are the most intelligent of the reptiles, who knew?!

    Thistle
    Dandelion
    Grass
    Meadow Hay
    Blackberry Leaf
    Small amount of Lettuce

Here are some pics from his wander out of his house today. He gets a 10 minute wander everyday now around the house. He's getting much braver and will chase after your hand trying to eat it! And he has started enjoying having the top of his head scritched, and will tilt is so you he gets tickled where he wants

Haha! You'd be surprised at how fast he can move, though - Lyle's dad was! He was fair sprinting round the room yesterday (Ron, not Lyle's dad!) and he can't half move when he wants to...I'll have to ask my dad to video it when he's next up :face-smile:

It's very cute, now when I open the side of his house he runs over to see me. And he follows your hand around and tries to nibble it. I'm dead chuffed he's settled in so well.

Ron just scared me and Lyle to bits! I woke Lyle up singing and jumping up and down on the couch (hehe) so he went over and looked at Ron and called me over, worried. I thought he was just being overprotective, but Ron was sleeping dead weird, head out and to the side...it's normal but it looked weird cos he normally sleeps in his shell.

So i lifted him up and moved him and buried him under his substrate which is how he likes to sleep...and my god he was SO annoyed!!!! He hissed twice and was the most unhappy tortoise ever. I bet he gets so annoyed with us both 'cos we worry about him so much

But better safe than sorry, haha :face-devil-grin:

Now Ron may not be fluffy but he sure is cute!!! I went to the garden centre by work today and they had 4 tiny tortoises - all pre-sold - but they made me think about Ron!

They also had very cute, very young baby rats, with almost empty water bottles. I had to wait 10 minutes until the girl who worked there had finished on the phone so I could tell her. She was moaning about the woman she'd just been helping. She had brought back a rabbit that she had bought from them, but who had developed breathing problems. The girl was blaming it on the woman having her heating on!!

Did you see how much they were, Kate? I got Ron for £99 and I think that's pretty damn cheap!

I was at Pets At Home once looking at the rats there (don't even get me started about the living conditions of their rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents...) and a woman and her child were buying some rats. The P@H worker got one out, the one they were buying, and they were handling it (I was surprised it didn't bite!) and it was sneezing constantly and wheezing. The woman asked if that was okay to which the P@H worker replied, "Oh yes, that's perfectly normal - just a cold!"

Shocking. And the woman and her child bought that rat and another :glare:

No they'd taken the price off the case because they were all sold. If I go in again I'll find out.

That's terrible! I can't say I'm surprised though - most of the staff in those places don't give a damn. A few weeks ago I went to buy rat food but all the bags were out of date. I told the girl and she said they'd be removed and new stock would be in the following week. I went in a week later and it was all still on the shelf. So I took 3 bags to the till and left them there. If they don't care about something so simple what hope is there for the poor animals.

Joe held her today, and he's a bit wary of rodents. He never handled his gerbils too much so they're quite nippy, but Pearl was good as gold and he fell in love with her

w00t I knew Ron was a good find! I love Paws for Thought for how reasonably priced their animals are and how well looked after they are. They sell varieties of tropical frogs for £10, it's hard to resist!!!

    Haha, meat pie!

    Grass
    Meadow Hay
    Thistle
    Dandelion
    Clover
    little bit of Cabbage

We're desperately looking for some plantain to give him but haven't found any yet :face-plain:

You might have to travel to the Caribbean for it, isn't that where it grows..?

Seriously though, maybe the specialist supermarkets would stock something like that. Helen's had it at her friends, so you can get it. Or you could just give banana instead!

He's doing so well. Whenever he's let around the living room now he has a 'lap' which he runs, the same every time, around the exercise bike over the slippers and then back again! And he still runs up to our hands but knows not to bite them now :)

Been tricky to get his food what with the snow, it needs defrosting after we pick it!

    Plantain
    Grass
    Raspberry leaf
    Meadow Hay
    Kale
    Carrot (as a treat!)

We put the tin of frozen plants under his heat lamp to defrost and Ron could see his food poking out the top - he was not a happy tort and kept trying to climb up to get it!
