He has such a big personality for such a little boy :001_rolleyes:

He came out today and had us in stitches. He decided to try climb up my legs first, which was very cute. Then it was time to tackle the great shoe mountain in the hope of making it back to his house...but that expedition failed.

It's okay though, because he got a snack at the end of it!

Well, I suppose at least if they fall they're pretty well protected!

Ron has been in a very climby mood recently...earlier today he went through his log tunnel, but he's getting a little big for it now (HE'S GROWING!), so he ended up with his head poking out the other end and dragging it along behind him

Russian Tortoise Care Tortoises have very strong eye sight and a great sense of smell, but they do not have any visible ears so no one is sure if they actually “hear”

We have the first ever accurate weigh-in of Ron, and he is... (drum roll please!)... 109.4g!!

I think he's pretty much at his highest weight now (our old scales tended to add on a little!) which is fab as it means he's deffo put on all the weight he lost when he was poorly. I took some mega cute photos of him today as well, which I can hopefully put up tonight at my parent's.

Can you believe it's been almost a year since we got the little fella?!

There was an item on our news yesterday about some researchers who'd taught a tortoise to yawn on command! It had only taken them a couple of months. The serious side to it was about judging how much intelligence they have and how quickly they can learn to aid their preservation. I think they just wanted to do something funny!

Edit: I found a link to it! (Something to try with Ron maybe?!)

We overwinter Ron at the moment because of his age, size and because he was ill too. Hibernating them mimics their natural behaviour (the reason they have such mammoth appetites is because they only eat 4 - 6 months of the year in the wild!) and there are some studies which show it extends their lifespan too.

Our Ron-roo is ill again :(

He has a gungy mouth and doesn't appear to be eating, or isn't able to. It could be mouth rot. We phoned a local vet about it, and asked if their vet has experience with tortoises...the receptionist told us the vet could give Ron a "thorough examination and advice", yet when we took Ron there (in the bitter cold) the vet told us he couldn't really help us with tortoises as he didn't know anything. He said he could give Ron a once-over, but he wouldn't know what anything meant, and he'd have to charge us for it.

We said we'd go elsewhere :glare:

We got a number for a Zoo Vet group, and phoned them, but the vet's away till after the New Year. The closest other exotic vets are in Leeds, and we can't get Ron there without a lift from my parents...

Poor Ron, he's always in the wars our little runty boy...

He still can't eat, but is having daily baths (so hopefully getting some fluids down him) and mouth swabs...worst time of year for it to happen of course :001_rolleyes:

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks Lee...feeling a bit useless at the moment as we can't get him to a vets because they have no knowledge of tortoises. Feel like we've been failed by vets...how can the majority of pet shops sell tortoises and yet ordinary vets can't treat them?!

We've upped his heat full and covered his house in blankets. Not sure what else we can do. Trying the specialists that can see us in a few days again today, hoping they pick up...

*edit* think we have an appt with them on 27th, and he seemed a little better after his last bath. His mouth looked better and he was rattling around like mad
