If there is anyone that could advise me as Pumpkin might have eaten a Poinsettia Leaf and is now not eating anything at all and only drinking water at the moment. She is very lethargic at the moment sleeping all the while. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I read somewhere that it was an urban myth that poinsettas are poisonous. Mind you I still dont buy them as my cats chew houseplants no matter what sort they are. How long has she been poorly ? have you checked her crop?

Well she has been kept indoors due to bullying by the other hens since before Christmas, she has been kept in a large dog cage for this time. But I was out yesterday and I think that some how a leaf from the poinsettia may have got into her cage and now she is what I would best describe as depressed hiding in the corner and not coming for treats when offered.

May be she is lonely on her own and a bit depressed from being bullied CW do you no for sure she has eaten one of these leaves ? Chickens do not tend to eat things that are harmful to them or though not in every case.

Not really but its the only explanation I can find as she was getting on so well eating anything that she was given now she won't even eat her favourite grapes.

I think you need to check all the normal things chickens suffer from CW like sour crop or an impacted crop check to see what her poo is like and is she drinking any water ? pick her up and feel her stomach if it is very hard then i would get her to the vet he will no.
i hope she will be OK CW do let us no :face-smile:

    Keeper of the hens

Chickens will usually eat plants even if we know it to be harmful to them...I've seen my girls eating string, polystyrene packaging shapes and paint before now *sigh* Unfortunately I'm really not sure what would be helpful...

I know with most other animals getting them to vomit after eating something toxic is the answer, but chickens can't vomit and emptying their crop is risky. Could you phone your vet and ask if they think you need to take Pumpkin in, and if it's urgent? I'd probably take her in ASAP just to be on the safe side, and until then give her water and plain yoghurt.

Lee makes a good point of checking for other problems too; check her poops are normal and that she doesn't have an impacted / sour crop.

    Hope she recovers soon :face-smile:

Still not right. Still just sitting in one corner of the hospital cage that I have in the sitting room for her. She did however have a little peck at a piece of cucumber earlier while sitting on a towel on my lap in front of the TV. Its almost like she's given up! I have a vets appointment tomorrow for her so hopefully they'll have some idea of what might be wrong. There is no sign of her being egg bound or of a sour crop as she has nothing in it at the moment. I feel totally helpless. CD has gone to the supermarket to get some yoghurt for her at the moment.
I will let you know what the vet says tomorrow when we get back. I suppose the good thing is she is sipping at her water from time to time.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow at 5.30pm (Vets)
    :fingerscrossed:

Thanks for all your advice :group-love:

    Hi All

Back from the vets with a very sleepy pumpkin, she was very brave as she pecked the vet when she gave her three jabs, one antibiotic, one steroid and one calcium shot. She let me down though as she did a large poo on the vets table!(just missing the vet).
By the time we had got her to the vets she had laid or passed what looked like a very soft egg shell, only to be described as looking like a deflated balloon. The vet hadn't seen one like this before and said when writing her notes up on the computer that she had passed what looked like an alien! In jest of course.
As she couldn't definitely say what had caused her to be ill but she had covered all bases by the injections and medicine that I have to administer to pumpkin. Hopefully the combination should be enough but we will have to wait and see.
They are the best vets that I have been to and we were in with the vet for around half an hour with her examining her for most of that time which include the weigh in on the scales. Just under two kilos. Hopefully she will gain weight if she gets her appetite back in the next few days. Anyway I will be keeping my fingers crossed for the next few days to see how things progress.:fingerscrossed:

Thank you for all for your kind help, advice and support I will continue to keep you all updated over the next few days. :001_smile:

I suspect she saw what the vet had written about her egg so decided to leave her something on the table that smelt alien too!!!

"Good news" Pumpkin seems to be on the mend. She has ventured out of the hospital cage for a bit today and proceeded to leave me a couple of nice pressies on the sitting room carpet! (Chicken Drumstick) was not amused. Soon sorted out though with the carpet shampoo and cloth and of course, I'm off to buy a couple of newspapers tomorrow to save the carpet if nothing else.

She has been eating a little better today and I have hung a corn on the cob in the cadge for her to peck at and she has nearly stripped it. She also has a personal CD hanging in the cage so she can see her reflection and not feel so alone.

So hopefully she is well on her way back to being a healthy but spoiled chicken.

    :face-smile:
