Well Sara has a new pet coming into our house but not for a couple of weeks yet. This is something Sara has never wished to have in the past but something now she feels is right. We are all very excited to have our new addition. This pet will fit in perfectly with family life !!!! But you will have to wait and see just what it is. Saturday the 20th is when this pet will come home and all will be reveled !!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, you can't make us wait that long :( :P

Oookay; dog's my first guess too; a puppy that you're waiting to be the right age? Not a cat because you're allergic, right? , rooster, snake, tarantula (kinda hoping it's that to freak Lyle out :tooth: ), MICROPIG!! (would be so cool) ermmm, sheep (?). Parrots a good one.

What a sweetheart! He is very handsome. I'll have to go google Patterdale's to see what he'll look like as an adult. I was going to go for a Parson's Terrier (long legged JRT!) - I'd have been darn close with that guess wouldn't I?!!!

(I can see the horse in the background looking through the stable door and thinking "it could've been me!")

Been to google images and ... dammit! That was my original thought but I didn't know what they were called! My friend's sister has one and it's like a naughty toddler! She came home one day and the door to the downstairs loo hadn't been shut properly. The dog went in and shredded a pack of 9 toilet rolls. The aftermath photo was really funny!

Awesome Lee!!!! He is gooooorgeous! Be sure to get a lot of socialisation done in his first year with other dogs, you know what terriers are like! If you ever happen to come up North when Dodger is fully grown, or we come down South, we'll have to meet up for a dog walk!

Patterdale terriers are cuuute - did you know they have Bull Terrier in their bloodline? One of my favourite breeds! Patterdale's are always on the go aren't they? Let me know if you need any mental stimulation exercises to keep Dodger busy in the house and wear him out!

Haha, I am all excited! :tooth: We do, of course, expect lots of photos and updates of the little guy

Thanks Red we are all very excited to,the reason he has not come home yet is in a couple of weeks we are away for a week so thought when we get back we would bring him home then rather than mess him about to much he is fine living on the farm and when ever we go on holiday they said they would look after him for us as the mum and dad of him and sisters all live there to and he will have had all of his injections buy the time we get him as well.

We do not confess to know everything about dogs but thanks to people like you Red it makes life a bit easier.

I don't know everything about dogs - I just know a lot because I spent 15 years researching them, I wanted one so badly! It's amazing how many things I've learnt about dogs just from having Kasper though.

Have you owned a dog before Lee?

Oh I can't imagine how cute it will be to have a puppy...a lot of hard work too of course, but so worth it! Hopefully we'll be able to adopt a puppy one day...if it could be around three months old and already house trained even better hahaha! :tooth:

Ah he is home that is adorable! I can't believe he's not more interested in the chickens - Kasper would catch a chicken in a heartbeat, or at least try to! Is Dodger house trained or do you have that to look forward to?! :P

Well you got Dodger at the right age to socialise him with your other animals. That was our problem with Kasper, he'd not been socialised with a lot of things, and it's particularly hard to do it now. Thankfully he settled with Ron after a few weeks (as long as Ron is in his house!) but chickens, sheep, birds in general, rabbits and cats are another story! Make sure you introduce Dodger to as many animals as you can, it makes adolescence and adulthood a lot easier! :tooth:

Aw Monty is cuuute! I've forgotten, is he a Horsefield?

Dodger is good Red, Today he had another injection and his chip has been fitted but he has gone mega mad tonight !!!!!!!!!! he loves chewing wire,s which is not to good as the modern home as you know has lots of wire,s in it but he is fast sleep now thank goodness.

I did take him on his lead in to the chicken Area today for the first time and he was quite calm.

If there are certain wires he targets regularly can you smear them with something he won't like the taste of? Mustard or chilli, that sort of thing, just to try to deter him? Otherwise there's the distraction tips like dropping your keys on the floor or a whistle - something to make him jump. I bet Red has some suggestions from her training efforts with Kasper!

    Keeper of the hens

Ah, a true puppy, already a handful!!

We saw a gorgeous little puppy in a pet shop today; the owner had rescued the puppy from some travellers who were trying to sell the puppy, but then turfed him out when nobody bought. It's a *tiny* dog, ribs jutting out half a mile, and far too young to be taken from it's mother (guesses estimate about five weeks old!). I hope the pet shop owner takes it to the vets to get it wormed and discuss what and how much to feed the poor thing, it was gorgeously cute but so so thin and little

Hmm, chewing...putting nasty tasty things on stuff never worked for us with Kasper. He licked up the bitter anti-chew stuff!!!

Your best bet is to start working on the 'leave it' command (the earlier you begin the more solid it becomes before adolescence hits!). 'Leave it's great because you can make it into a game too, once Dodger knows it better throwing toys or treats at him, getting him to leave them, and then letting him go get them is great fun and builds self-control in Dodger too!

Also, clicker training has been a lifesaver for us, I don't know if you've heard of it (we learnt about it through Animal Care), but here's an intro video (you only need to watch the first 30 seconds but it's quite interesting anyway!):

Until you've worked on leave it, when he goes near the wires distract him with a toy (call his name, praise and play with him), use one of his favourites...it's amazing how many things Kasper has learnt through misbehaving! Through nipping he's learnt "go get a toy" (he can't nip with a toy in his gob!!) and through chewing it's "chew this instead," and then he gets something good like a hide
Enjoy Dodger and his mad, but cute, puppy behaviours! I can't wait until I get to experience puppyhood with a dog of my own :)

    Keeper of the hens

It comes from years of wanting a dog and then having a very 'special' dog myself!

Having said that the clicker I'm using at the moment was originally bought to be used with Pearl, but all she is interested in is her wheel!!

What I've learnt is to always think outside the box; concentrate on praise and fun and ignore or distract from bad behaviour - ignoring a dog of any age is the best way you can 'punish' them for misbehaving, and it only has to be for 10 - 20 seconds!

Pups and certain breeds are very sensitive so you don't want to punish or scare them in any way at all. The only way we 'punish' Kasp is by either ignoring him (including leaving the room and closing the door behind us) or verbally saying "ap-ap-ap!" (that's our 'no don't do that' noise!) and "no biting", because he knows not to do it.

Ah bless him, I wish we had Kasper at that stage :)

Kasper will do the same; if he saw another dog he would run across a road to get to them. Or chase a cat! He just doesn't understand the concept of roads, so we have taught him the command "on the path," so we can tell him where he needs to be and where he shouldn't be. It's been helpful so far when walking on lead. We also make him "wait" to cross roads and use "ok" to release him...

Oh Lee he is a super little lad so adorable. Look at his lovely shiny coat and beautiful liquid eyes, I love him to bits. Thank you for the photo's of him, this thread is hidden behing the stickies, so I have missed seeing them until just now. I must start using the new posts button each time then I won't miss a thing !!!
