I have often seen fellow hencammers on line and wanted to say Hi, but where do i find you lurking ? Its not obvious where to find you, its more luck than judgement. As we dont have a Private message system where we can page each other and talk one to one like other forums we rely on sending a whisper and it can be ages til you check out that thread before you get a reply.. So what about having a dedicated thread This one, where when you log on and see a friend on line you can dive here and say Hi and chat away (Similar to what happens) on the girls thread but where we can just come to and say whatever... What do you guys think. Somewhere where you can keep returning to, every few clicks to see if anyone wants to chat!

I wonder if neil can have a system where when you are in a thread your name appears to show you are in that thread and can be spotted too ?

So if you think this is a great idea say hi here when you spot someone on line... and if you are on line keep popping in to look......

we in the UK police are highly trained in the art of pursuits.. we dont do what you see in the US where they hit the corner of the car and spin the baddies out of control... we follow and wait... and use helicopters to help (When they are available) we always think SAFETY of others and if in doubt drop back or pull off... we are trained to respect other road users and to swallow pride and if the bad guy gets away... tuff, another day he will come again.

The training today is to brush up on skills and to drive fast.. very fast and get from A to B safely

    Keeper of the hens

I'm ok now thanks! Although that's probably because I passed it onto Scarlet, hehe :)

Hopefully she'll be ok for Christmas!

It's been going round at work, it seems to affect some people really badly but others just get a slight cough (I was one of the lucky ones) - the BBC covered it as the "winter vomiting bug" and the symptoms were listed as (sorry if you are eating) "sudden projectile vomiting and diorrhea"! Now there's a combination... (should this topic be moved into the "runny poo" discussion? :D

Hope everyone is well. There was coverage of the really bad ice in the states and showing the roads with overturned and burnt out cars - really horrible.... best wishes and thoughts to those affected... Really makes you think when we moan here about a bit of rain and some frost...

Did you notice the Chrimbo lights on hencam - they disappear at night sorry but if you check the site during the daylight hours you should see a new graphic for the coop...

If you work for the NHS and get D&V for more than a couple of days you have to send a 'stool' sample to be analysed. How gross!! I'd have to lie and say I'd got tonsillitis or something rather than that!! Its so that it can't be passed to patients via staff as it's a killer of the elderly.

Can I just say I didn't have that - just a really bad heavy cold. I've just had 90 minutes where I haven't had to blow my nose - think it might finally be going!!

Like neil said earlier.. Ice and slippy roads. yesterday i wnt to 6 sperate accidents on country roads some of them cars actually overturned.. then in the evening a multiple Motorway smash where we had to close the m40 motorway, people seriously injured (What sort of christmas do they expect) Cars trucks all smashed up and what a mess, i was first to arrive and I get greeted by helpers who stopped and scared people and excited people and as i am a very experienced traffic officer I was able to calm what was an awful situation... this is just one accident, there will be others... so here is my wish: That all fellow hencammers stay safe and drive safely...

Does everyone know that when you select categories, and then open a particular category at the end of each Thread topic line a RED number appears, ( Number of new replies)that shows you that that thread has had some replies since you last looked.. it saves opening up everything just to check.. so No red numbers No replies its kind of quick to check rather than opening everything

Welcome Xenoth! That sounds like a gaming name - does it have a history? Oh yes, are you male or female? We made a few mistakes in the early days of other posters!! I'd guess male?

What product are you designing? Glad to see the hens are having the usual effect - stopping you doing what you should be doing!!

Guess again, I'm female, although I do like the name for its ambiguity.

I use Xenoth as my aunt, real name Dorcas, once managed to convince everyone, including the NHS, that that was her middle name!

I'm designing a device to treat water radioactive water and make it drinkable. Have been writing the annoying report for about a week now, and its still not done!

I'm currently in Cambridge, supposedly doing work on a research project (also not going well), but I orginally hail from Wiltshire, and will be heading back that way next weekend for X-mas

    Hi Xenoth,
Wow, That is some project you have there. You won't get much done if you come on here and get watching the hens.
Dianne made a thread on "What we should be doing instead of watching Hencam". You may need to go on there for confession and forgiveness from time to time.

I am female too and use the abbreviated name to cover my gender on some sites.

Well, its a great one! My son has always said he'd love a name that began with 'X'! Also, there was a post on here a couple of weeks ago about guide dogs, and I'm sure one of the stories related to a male dog called Dorcas, but that it was a female name. Must be destiny that you found the site!

So is that radioactive water that comes from nuclear power plants? Does the device work? What do they do with radioactive water now?!

It's purely a hypothetical device, as it's part of my degree. We just had to go through the process of designing it. The scenario is that thousands of kilos of radioactive substances have gone missing, particularly in Eastern Europe, and are now in low levels in the water system. There are already devices around that do what ours does, but, apparently, radioactive water is usually a very localised problem.

Dorcas is a biblical name, where it was used for a woman. Can't remember what it was she was supposed to have done tho... :S

Wazza - do you get creatures living in your water butts as well? We get scary wiggly things swimming around in ours!

Dorcas was a disciple of Joppa found in the Book of Acts (at 9:36-42) of the Bible. She was a dressmaker, who made clothes for the poor in her village. When she died, the people of the village called upon Saint Peter who is said to have raised her from the dead.

"Dorcas" is a female name of Greek origins, (the Aramaic cognate is "Tabitha"), meaning "gazelle". Recursively, there is a type of gazelle today called the dorcas gazelle. She is commemorated with Lydia of Thyatira and Phoebe on January 27 in the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and on October 25 in the Calendar of Saints of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.

Good bit of info! I think Chief Chicken said she was from the bible, but its interesting to know she was such a good and kindly person. Is your aunt? BTW the NHS will believe anything - except that you're sick. Oh no, that'll cost money to fix so you can't be.

When my youngest son was very young I convinced him I was the drummer in Josie and the pussycats. He believed it for years!! He still tells people how cruel I was for telling such a lie. I think of it more as a fib!

Xenoth, I think those wiggly things in your water butt may be moquito larvae. I absolutely hate mossies.
You can put some washing up liquid on the water surface, just a very little. It interupts their ability to hang onto the surface tension to breathe. Cooking oil works too, I think in that case they just get gummed up with it.

I have golden orfs in my garden pool to eat them. Don't put these liquids in if you have fish!

I wondered what those wiggly things were; we have them in the 'Water Feature' (grand name for old sink with dribbly fountain-type thing). Whatever they are, Sage and Onion eat them when they have a drink! So do the rabbits. And the cats...I hope they aren't toxic!

I'm wondering what a "water butt" is? lol

OMG Kate that is so funny! Do you have a drum kit around the house? When, or perhaps more significantly-how, did your son realize the truth? I would have loved to have spent a portion of my life thinking my mother was a girl band drummer :)

Xenoth can your protype de-salinate as well? We are going to need a whole lot more clean water from somewhere in the next few decades... Stop reading this and get back to those books woman!

By the way I'm Diane - "Dianne" is just Ollie's pet name for me; and she insists on it, even though it costs her typing an extra letter... LOL. Makes me feel loved.

Water butt = plastic barrel-type thingy for collecting rainwater, often via drainpipe from gutter. And according to my mate in Florida, you don't have gutters or drainpipes either!

We have gutters and drain pipes, CC..I've spent many hours on the roof top cleaning mine out. We just call a "Water Butt" a "rain barrel" over here. I think your friend was putting you on about us not having them here. :)

Ah, I really want to get some rain barrels and do the grey water garden thing. Although right now its very hard to picture EVER needed to water the yard again!

Oh Diane, I didn't realiseI was putting that extra letter in your name. Someone doing that to me would have driven me wild. Though I do sometimes use Oli.
I don't mind the extra letter on here, it doesn't use any extra ink as on paper.
When I used to book women with a Consultant I would choose the one with the shortest name to save ink and time!

Sorry, Diane..I don't do that anymore...I use to have a construction company, years ago with my first hubby..I got to do a lot of dirty jobs, because I was small and could fit in tight places, or put on top of a roof because I didn't weigh enough to cause any damage to old roofing. Tell ya what..if you want to come down here and babysit my Mom..I'll come up there and clean your gutters. :D

Ollie! We (chief chicken & I) teased you about some spelling thing once. My comment was about the spelling of my name. You wrote back that you'd wondered if (well one of us - I assumed me) would notice your intentional error. So I then assumed you wanted to spell my name like that. Noooo - I don't have a pet name then :(

(Ok - since you can't see my face - which is 85% of how we communicate - I'll tell you that it looks amused and just slightly sad. A mixture of emotion really. :D)

Diane, up that way, I don't know anyone who is still in the business..look in the phone book and then check with the Better Business Beau or Dept. of Labor and Industries to make sure they are Lic. & Bonded. You don't want to get stuck with some fly by night outfit, even if it is a small project. I know a lot of folks that have gotten taken, by some company that didn't know "level and plumb" from a pile of dog poop.

Glad I made you smile Diane! No, have never had drums (or even drum sticks!) in the house! I just used to sit and pretend to drum (air drums!) and he was at that age where he'd believe anything his mom told him.

My mom told me egg shells would give me warts - I used to love to smash them up after I'd had a boiled egg - and was a fully grown adult before I found out it wasn't true!

We'd puncture the shells when we finished a boiled egg so the witches couldn't use them as boats...

Kate you've got me thinking about 'mommy mind games.' Didn't take long to come up with one. :) When I was little our mother told us that the fortune in Chinese fortune cookies won't come true unless you eat the paper its written on. Fast forward 3 decades. My sisters and I are treating Mum to a nice dinner in the fanciest of Chinese restaurants in Seattle. After dinner we each reach for a cookie, open it, read our fortunes and then eat them. Our mother, who has long since forgotten this terrible lie she told us, stares at us all in amazement and more than a small amount of concern.

And on occasion-a barbershop in Japan; Old Faithful erupting in Yosemite (reminds me of our visit when I was a little kid-I can almost smell the sulpher); Graz-because their cam has user controlled movement; Seattle movable cam located on top of the Space Needle; Mt St Helens's cam - to see what the weather is likely to blow in from the south; Gorilla cam (San Diego Zoo) and other's I've forgotten. But, actually, all of these got a bit boring. Hencam never has!

The firewall is ridiculous - blocks some perfectly acceptable sites but still uses the flawed method of a "unallowed list" which means that unless it's constantly updated every second they can't hope to block some of the bad stuff. And there are websites that can get round stuff like that (some people use them to view hencam - I've seen it in the logs!)

I think there's a market for stuffonmychicken.com - though it would have to be quite light stuff!

LOL. My 74-year old mother and I phooned for a cam at the University of Oregon. Fun stuff. Can you look at it at home Neil? Because I think it would be GREAT to have a hen cam entry - maybe Red in her, now world famous, striped pants and Milly in a pair of Lynn's striped socks. (Lynn's busy knitting as I type.)

Gotta have a look at the sites Wazza & Kate posted.

That's funny about the Maine Coon block. That was one seriously PC firewall :)
