I almost got a ticket tonight at a store. Opal and I were shopping and a policeman came indide and asked if I was the driver of the white Ford F150 truck. " Yes, Sir, Did I leave the lights on ? " No, he said , " You are parked in two spaces. I do not mind you having one space... but two are too many. "I went out and tried to park within the one space but either the spaces are too close together or that truck is too wide. I went back inside the store and paid for my stuff and left pronto. That was a nice policeman.... as he could have fined me .

There have been complaints locally, in UK, that parking spaces are painted too small. I drive a Nissan Micra, which is small and sometimes have trouble getting in and out of the car as other cars are so close.
Maybe this is the base problem at your store.

Spaces are getting closer - especially in car parks where you have to pay. Means they can cram more cars in and get more money off you! I must admit I hate it when people park over 2 spaces, but its usually because they don't want anyone to park next to their precious motor. They should be charged for 2 spaces! If the car (or truck!) is too wide then fair enough, as long as they've tried, but to do it deliberately is selfish. Don't think it'd be an offence that a policeman would be interested in over here though (Wazza?)

I nearly got collected by the car behind on the way home on Thurs. I was 5th in a formation of cars and the front one stopped to turn right. I slowed and looked in my mirror thinking "hope he's realised we've stopped" - which was when I heard the squeal of the tyres frantically scrabbling for grip. I moved forward a little more but there wasn't room - thankfully the roads were dry and he just made it. Phew!

That squealing/scrabbling sound was me the other day. I was barreling along an entrance to the freeway that I take twice a week, in a slightly comatose state. That day the road had a nice, wet, & slightly icy surface. I rounded the curve in the road and found that everyone had stopped because of a jam up at the entry point to the I-5. Eeeeek. My tires were about as useful as ice skates. My steering wheel was more helpful as I jerked the car in and out of my lane to increase the distance from the car in front of me, through the act of frantic weaving. I pressed harder and harder on the brake pedal just in case magic might suddenly overtake physics. The only incantation I could think of at the time was the very feminist: *Son of a B....* I missed the car in front of me by a few short feet. I've been a lot more awake for the journey since then!

I'd done the same as the car behind me a couple of weeks before but in exactly the same place. Thankfully I made the stop too - it's made me more aware of that particular junction after dark. Was crashed into on the same road but the opposite end 3 years before - wet roads and poor woman had no chance of stopping. No injuries, just dented cars!

I've found acting really stupid useful. :) Like: REALLY? That kind of turn is not allowed?? Ohhhh.

Wazza - are you thinking of teaching us how to actually drive like adults rather than Fun Forest attendees?

    Keeper of the hens

fun forest - one with swings on every tree and roundabouts and climbing frames? :)

Janice - wow your car is *big*! I'm not surprised it won't fit into some parking spaces - they definitely try and cram the spaces together tightly now (suppose it means more customers can visit!)

I drive a - don't laugh! It was cheap and it's quite ecomical! It's tiny as well (nearly as small as a smart car) so it's easy to park! It's also not very fast but who cares - it's not a race :)

I'd rather go by bike but I think mine might have rusted solid through underuse.... now there's a new year's resolution........

    Hi Neil :)

Lynn - is *Fun Forest* just the name of the one at Seattle Center? Or is that a general name? Can't remember?

That looks like a very cool car Neil - saving bird habitat while driving too. What make is it?

It's just a name for the amusement park for the Seattle Center, Diane.. it's been there since the Worlds Fair was held there (way back when) :)

Is it a Kia Picanto? The 2 cars that are the bane of my life are a blue picanto and a grey micra. They dawdle in front of me every morning and make my journey to work very frustrating. I'm sure they can do 60mph if they try!

Neil, I like your car and wish that I had one just like it. I need better gas milage. My vehicle is a Ford F150 Lariet Pick-up truck . There are some F250 and F350 Fords that make mine look like a toy and gee I would never be able to pay for gas for them. I do like my truck as far as looks and accesories and it is roomy and has a full back seat and 4 doors. I had a car but it was very old and worn out . My husband had a nice truck and when he made his last payment, I asked him if I could buy a new car, since I like to drive alot with Opal and Lizzie and needed something safer and more dependable. I had gone to the next town and picked out a car to bring home to see if we liked it before signing the papers. When I passed the local Ford place here in town, I saw this truck and it just really caught my eye.... so I decided to buy it . It is like a car and we can haul stuff in the back end. Most folks around here in the rural south , drive trucks or SUVs ... as a matter of fact ... out of the 200 plus new vehicles on the Chevrolet lot in Grenada, there are only 5 passenger cars and the rest are trucks and a few SUVs. I would like to have a new Chevrolet Malibu but that is but a dream right now.... can not afford two payments.

Janice, I reckon your truck would make 4 of my smart car; in fact, my smart would probably fit in your glove box! I call it Arfur, because it's only arfur car...I don't know how to put a pic up, but it's on the UK Piano Page forums - a grown-up did it for me! :)

    Keeper of the hens

Janice, I think I might swap you your truck for my car - it would be interesting to drive something big - Chief Chicken will probably agree that sometimes in a small car you get "muscled out" by other larger cars who must think "well they're so much smaller than me they'll give way to me pulling into their lane..!"

It's a Daewoo Matiz, although now Chevrolet bought them out so the newer ones are Chevrolet Matiz's. It's pretty small (in fact a Smart car is one inch wider!), but a bit longer so it still fits four passengers, and at a slight crush, five :)

It's not regarded as a "cool" car though (the Smart and the Mini's of the world have that title), but sometimes other drivers take pity on you and let you out at junctions! I like how every Smart car looks different, and they often have really eyecatching designs on them... I'd love to have a completely hencam logo'd one sometime in the future!

I used to drive a Smart car a fair bit as they had a couple of them where I last worked - they are nifty little things (don't they all have turbo's?) - I'd have got one instead of the Matiz but couldn't afford the difference.... (awww!)

Some people think the smart is cool, some wouldn't be seen dead in one. Marmite cars!
The Guardian (trendy right-on newspaper, for our US readers) made their bigwigs drive smarts instead of their big executive cars. One bigwig forgot his pass, and the gatekeeper wouldn't let him in.
"DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM????" he roared.
"You're a silly little man in a silly little car," he replied, unmoved...

Neil, get a smart with Hencam stuff on it; I get so many enquiries about tuning from people who've seen my car! We could be famous...! :)

They're as safe as anything else, I think... I got mine cheap because it was a 'last year's' reg - amazing how many people worry about the numbers on their car!

Yes, we need a new car and I'm thinking of seeing if there are any bargains in the 'left over' 57s before they go to 08.
(For the Americans its just the way our car reg' system works - the number changes every 6 months - beginning of year 08, like 2008, then half way through the year will go to 58.)
