    Keeper of the hens

Penny was PTS this evening. Me and Lyle were over at my parents and as usual I ran down to see the chickens. I grabbed Elsie for a snug and let the other two scaredy-chickens make their own way out. Penny was upstairs so I opened the side door to say hello to her.

It became immediately apparent that something wasn't right, and I called my dad to come see. We lifted her out and I knew straight sway this was it; she was making no effort to get away from us, wasn't walking, her crop had been empty for 24 hours, and she just wasn't Penny.

I asked my dad to get an appt ASAP at the vets, and he managed to get one just after they closed. We wrapped Penny in a towel and had a wonderful journey to the vets, odd as it sounds. Penny was so content on my lap, I stroked her eyebrows and groomed the feathers behind her comb and showered her with kisses and she slept all the way, bless her.

She was so well behaved at the vets, but when the vet suggested anti-biotics I said no as I didn't want Penny to suffer and I knew there was no coming back. We said a teary goodbye and told her what a special hen she was now, and now she is reunited with her two sisters and with my Milly-babe.

Penny was a truly amazing girl and had probably reached 10 years old and still laid the odd egg. She might have been an absolute coward in most circumstances, but when she was broody she would savagely attack your hands to stop you getting her eggs! She also enjoyed a fair few cuddles once you got hold of her, and was a beautiful girl.

Rest In Peace my special Penny-hen...

What sad news - I'm so sorry Red, Neil and family. It was very brave of you to make that decision Red, it is never easy but it is the one kindness we can do for our animals. I'm glad you had that time together in the car - a special memory to treasure.

    Sleep soundly little Penny.
