    Keeper of the hens

Six days ago we opened our home to a little rescue pup. Someone we met through our business told us that their neighbour, who isn't a very nice person, didn't want the puppy anymore. She had been spending a lot of time outside with no shelter, and the 'owner' was going to dump her!!! So we said we would look after her, and potentially rehome her...haha ;)

    Here she is

    Photobucket

We think she's about 10.5 weeks old now, is mostly / all Staffy and we have named her Zoey!

    Photobucket

How adorable is she?! Especially in her new pink harness!!!

    Photobucket

Kasper *really* wasn't impressed at first, and growled a lot! However with lots of counter conditioning they play together wonderfully now, and growling only happens when it should - Kasper is far too much of a push over, and will lay on his back whilst Zoey bites his neck, the poor boy!

    Photobucket

And a goofy pic of Kasper enjoying the snow :)

    Photobucket

Zoey has had a vet visit and her first vaccination. Crate training is going well, as is house training, she has learnt touch, her name (recall), is learning sit and knows to wait in her crate until released!

    And some videos :)

    Thanks!

And you two are fantastic for taking on poor little Zoey - how can people be so horrible??:face-sad: I'm sure she'll grow into a lovely dog, just as Kaspar did with your loving guidance. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE keep us updated with regular pics, won't you?

She is beautiful and if you decide to rehome her she will be such a lovely pet with your excellent training. I still think you should take it up as an occupation. There are so many pets and owners that would benefit from your experience.

Of course she's more likely to become a permanent member of your ever expanding family! She already looks a very loving dog and I'm sure will be a wonderful addition. Look forward to seeing her grow!

Oh how cute, she is lovely as CC said how can people be so horrid to such a little one she is but a baby still. Kasper is a good boy to tolerate her so quickly They will become such good friends and will make lovely play mates on their lovely walks. I loved seeing him enjoy the snow in the video and what a wonderful body swerve he did. I am sure he can turn on a sixpence. Do keep us updated so we can share them both with you.XXXX

    Thanks everybody :)

The videos above are of both dogs playing and having fun together, and I finally taught Zoey sit! Sorry they are up there, blame my tablet...

Both pups are doing great. Kasper is amazingly patient with her and has everybody commenting on what a star he is (especially when they see the video below!). He adores Zoey, and she loves bothering him - someone predicted that by 4 months old she will be the boss, and I totally agree!

Today Zoey travelled in a car for the firstf time and came to my grandparents' house whilst we ate. She was great and loved everyone. She didn't have any accidents, slept both ways in the car, and loved pootling around the garden on an extendible lead.

She now knows sit, touch, go into her crate and we are working on lead training.

We also have positive reinforcement classes booked in for when Zoey's jabs are up to date! Even better its only 2 mins walk away!! :) We grilled the trainer and she seems good, so we will pop along and see what we think.

Thankyou CC  Its funny you should say that as we just got a 5 day a week 'job' walking and training an 8 month old beagle puppy!! :D

We met her for the first time last week, and her owners chose us as the pup loved us so much! We went again today to join her on a walk, and get the keys, and her owners were gobsmacked because I taught her 'touch' within 2 minutes :woohoo:

I adore working and being with dogs, and helping their owners understand them more

I posted more on the other forum:

Just over a week ago Edge and I got in touch with a couple who had an 8 month old beagle. They worked shifts and were wanting someone to walk their dog during the day.

We said we would love to do it, and were invited around to their house. Their beagle, is adorable! She took to us right away and, although boisterous and cheeky (and very funny!), she just needs some manners training. We will be walking her every week day, which I can't wait for! And I am also welcome to do as much training with her as I like - WHICH I CAN'T WAIT FOR!!!

We visited again today and were shown some good walks where they live. I practised some recall whilst she was off-lead, with food rewards obviously, and she responded very well. So well in fact that I think we will be letting her off-lead tomorrow, our first walk with her!

Some of her 'issues' (not really issues, but for want of another word...) are: jumping up on people, going on the couch uninvited, pulling on lead, and a very slight fear or uneasiness due to a few slightly overbearing training methods used - which will be incredibly easy to repair and educate from!

Whilst Edge was sorting out the practicalities (pay, keys, times etc.) I spent some time training with her. She is *obsessed* with food, which makes it easy to get her to offer new behaviours, but she can be obsessed with it, so I had to hide it behind my back!!

Anyway, after a few minutes pup had mastered the 'touch' command, which her owners were amazed at, haha! I'll have her leg weaving and showing off in no time!! ;)

Thanks Kate  Haha, yes EVERYBODY has been impressed and surprised with Kasper ;)

They match each other very well. Both very rough and tumble, listen to each other very well, intelligent - am i biased haha?!

Our friend came around tonight and Zoey loves him as much as Kasper does!! He now has to put up with two crazy dogs

And yes, I do love my babies!!! :001_tt1:

Today I've been working on Kasper waiting on the couch whilst I trained Zoey on the floor. He did great, I'm sure he'll have it perfected in no time! Then I'm gonna work it the other way, but Zoey needs to be a little older first.

I've also had both dogs do a sit and wait next to each other today, which I was seriously impressed with! I'm gonna have to take a photo or video of this tomorrow as its way cute, but my laptop / camera is bust, grrr!

We also worked on leave it, which Zoey is getting good at! She will ignore the covered treat, back up and sit...clever girl that one! I really hope she helps bust the Staffy stereotype for as many people as possible...already my older cousin has said "I thought they just went around killing people but she's actually cute!"

Living in an area where the predominant dog is a staffy, I have seen some really well trained ones. I think they are very intelligent which is why they were bred to guard the nursery. Good luck with the beagle (my favourite pedigree!) Will you take Kasper and Zoey with you, or are you going to wait a while?

Touch is essentially teaching the dog a target, I generally start off with my fingers. It's useful in getting the dog's attention, people are impressed with it, it's great for teaching fearful or sensitive dogs that hands are a cue / mean a treat and not a scary thing! Once they have the touch understood, you can teach them to target other things (for eg, in the first vid I posted, we taught Kasper to target Zoey when he was afraid of her - so she = treats!)...the end of a stick, a post-it note you can put anywhere (to teach the dog to close a door for example)...touch can also be used for teaching other tricks, like leg weaves, or for getting a dog off furniture without threatening it.

    Ooops, waffled!

Ahaha I don't think I could manage that CC, I'm tired after working with three dogs everyday!! :rolling:

I love Staffies...as anyone who knows me is aware :001_tt2: Cool! Why are Beagles your breed?

Zoey needs her 2nd vac first, but in a few months time (when she's big enough to make the walk!) we will definitely be taking her along. Possibly Kasper as well / separately, but we need to check out the Beagle's walk first to make sure it is Kasper-proof! The bits with seen are all around a play park, or allotments with open gates, which I don't think Kasper would particularly enjoy

She's definitely grown, and isn't underweight anymore...well, maybe slightly, but her ribs are no longer visible, whoo! Today we worked some more on leave it, which she's doing really well at (it's a hard pic for a young pup to learn!), drop it (proving tricky as she now drops the object before I ask her to!!! :rolling: ) and I think that is all!

I saw Crufts one year and the beagles were in the show ring. I just loved the way they kicked their legs out straight in front when they walk. To be honest I'm not really that fussed about breed, personality is most important isn't it.

I can't believe that Zoey, a baby, can do touch! It is lovely to see that (I've never seen it before, or rather never realised I'd seen it!) She is such a clever girl. I'll be interested to hear in the future who is easier to train, Zoey or Kasper (or the beagle!)

    Keeper of the hens

    Thank you all :)

Ugh we have been so busy...poor Kasper boy had to go to the vet the other day. I found a lump on the underside of his tail, which we're hoping is an infected lump from puppy play...otherwise its an innocent cyst that will need removing, and Kasper might need his tail chopped off!!!!
    :gasp:

So we're really hoping the antibiotics will sort it out. Kasper *hates* the vet, especially as ours is a man, so I really don't want to have to put him through that again. I've never seen him so scared last time, he wouldn't even eat the PB last time! Otherwise he is fine though :)

Zoey is good too. *She* had to go to the vets today for her 2nd vac and microchipping. My heart about broke when she was being held and needled, and to make matters worse as soon as she was released she ran waggy-tailed to kiss the vet, awww! I scooped her up and smothered her in kisses, she was like 'muuum!'

She is eating way more now as she grows bigger. When we first got her, her collar was on the tightest setting, now its on the biggest and still sligtly tight! We have her next collar ready though (of course haha!) and its really cute. She has learnt a new trick too, I say 'how high' and she stands on her back legs hahaha! :D

We had family visit yesterday. They were *terrible* with both dogs (as ever *sigh*)...at one point Zoey was grabbed around the neck and held to the ground...I almost got violent then :P But thankfully Zoey is a very sociable pup, and didn't mind. They all loved her though, and all three of them are the most anti-staffy people I know, so I'm sure Zoey will be a fab educator as she grows.

And a video - this was before how high though sorry! I can't add pics either as my tablet / photobucket are being useless...technology annoys me so much!

I know. It's the closest I have ever been to kick off at family. Grrr, makes me mad just thinking about it!

Posted By: chief chickenRed; give up training Zoey - sounds as though it's the yumans wot want training!

    Haha, as ever! :face-smile:

Zoey is learning a new command, 'cuddle'! I sit on the floor with my legs in a circle, and she runs and has to stand in the middle of them!

Eh, I'm a little sad tonight...the beagle's owners are thinking of rehoming her, and they've only had her 3 months...she just needs some proper good training, handling differently... *sigh* Breaks my heart...if we hadn't just found pupster we would've taken her too :crying: *sigh*

But Zoey is doing fine. Her new collar is blue with white flowers, and it turns out the flowers glow bright green in the dark which is cool. I need to do a ton of counter conditioning with her harness, as she's terrified of it, and we'll be able to take her out in 5 days (big yay!)

Can you get the beagle's people to let you keep training her for a few weeks and wait to see the results? Idiots...do they think a working dog like a beagle isn't going to be full of get up and go? They should have got a ten year old pekinese or something.

    Keeper of the hens

Thanks guys, others have been less understanding about why I'm so upset, so its nice to have people that empathize...we have really bonded with her, I feel SO sorry for her. We would've totally adopted her pre-Zoey (not that I'm not over the moon at having pupster! :tooth: )

Really tried my damndest training beagle today. I'd already been proofing a few things (wait, waiting to be invited up on the couch, getting off the couch, not jumping up etc) but today I tried so hard. I wrote two A4 pages about good dog food and the effect poor dog food can have on behaviour, training aids, the work we'd done and how to do it.

The main thing I wanted to stop was the constant jumping. Now beagle's default behaviour is sit, and I've worked on her keeping her sit, even when people reach for her, or are handing her treats...her bum has to stay on the floor until released to get the treats. Only took three 5 min sessions! I tried to explain how much beagle enjoys this training, and how useful it is...

Her owner contacted us to say beagle hadn't jumped up once all evening, which is good :)

We've also added our profile to a few sites, advertising walking or training in our local area (thanks for the prompting CC!), seeing as Lyle has a bike that works now we can travel further, faster and for free!

Did some awesome training with Zozo today, really enjoyed it :) We bought a new harness today, one that goes over the head, so I'm counter conditioning her to it. In one session we moved all the way up to touching her with it! Also introduced the clicker to all the other commands, really helped with leave it.

Took Zoey for her first mini-walk with Kasp today. She did so much better with her brother there; pulled like a steam train on a collar though ack! We can work on outdoor lead training later though, when she's more comfortable.

    13 weeks old tomorrow!!!

Trying to upload pics to compare, then and now :)

Staffies always seem to pull on a lead -I've always assumed that's why they're all walked off lead round here! I'm sure she will enjoy her harness in the end.

It is a shame that they're giving up on beagle so soon. Have they had her from puppy or was she a rehome? I hope they decide to postpone and see how it goes now that they've seen such a good result already. The only things I would say are that if they are so impatient maybe beagle is better off going to a new home, and your training will make that easier. Also, a beagle is probably easier to home than a staffie so I'm glad you've got Zoey otherwise she would've been the one stuck in kennels. It is heartbreaking that people can be so matter of fact about a pet, and as animal lovers we can all empathise with you. Give Kasper and Zoey and extra cuddle tonight -there's nothing like a pet to make you feel better. xx

Forgot to say, we'll done on teaching beagle that so quickly, and beagle remembering it when you're not around!

    Keeper of the hens

Every dog I've ever walked, minus three (Ellie girl and two ex-racing Greyhounds in rescue), have pulled. I'm pretty sure Zoey will pull when she's an adult, partly because I fail at lead training, partly because I'm lazy :001_tongue: and lastly because I don't want to start yet as Zoey's just getting used to the lead / walking, and she's on a collar...

Got a text yesterday, after thinking there was a chance they were keeping Beagle...they're rehoming her today :beaker::fierce:

Posted By: KatebIt is a shame that they're giving up on beagle so soon

^ ^ That. They got her from a friend at 5 months, so I guess a rehome. They're nice people, it's just such a shame for the dog...mind you, maybe she lucked out and they chose a good home with lots of experience *crosses fingers*

Shame I'll never get to finish teaching leg weaves...

'Nuff said on that. Back to my pups!

Zoey is fabbidab! We took her for her first few walks (which is very naughty as she's not officially supposed to go out till tomorrow *slapped hand* ) and eeeh I am so proud of baby girl! :woohoo::yay_jump:

Today she met around 20 people - *everyone* stopped to love her, even joggers! And Zoey lapped up all the fuss and loved it. She was brilliant! She saw about 10 dogs too and was marvelous with them all. The dogs she met were all perfect, and when a group of four went racing past her Zoey tried to run after them!!!

She saw a HUGE GSD cross (seriously, it was massive) and did great with it, and I knelt so she could climb onto my lap for security. She is well and truly socialised haha, we just have to keep this positivity up while she grows.

We also let her off-lead (well, she was on a 10 foot long-line that we dropped and let trail after her just in case), which she really enjoyed. She came back every time we called her name so that was great too! :yay_jump:

    Pics to follow :)

    Keeper of the hens

People are very quick to give up on dogs these days. They expect training to work instantly, and don't understand or have the patience for months of training.

Thankyou! I can't believe how big she is now! She's 14 weeks old today, meaning we have had her 4 weeks  :_party:

She's doing great. I've been doing lots of work with both dogs around food, and can feed Kasper just outside the kitchen and Zoey just inside, with no trouble whatsoever. Toys are another matter and we still can't have any objects or toys around as Kasper will RG, so I have to work some more on that *yawn*

I'm making another video of both dogs playing together, they're both SO happy! :001_tt1: Added:

I need to upload another training video too, she's made so much progress! Her harness CC is going really well, we had a kind of a breakthrough yesterday. After days and days of little progress and her still hating putting her head through the loop, yesterday she willingly put her head through and didn't mind when I simultaneously moved it backwards. If I hold it out she also runs and touches it too, and I've been doing it where the click of the harness' clip equals a treat too, so she loves every aspect of it.

She also knows wait, and will stay sat when I'm up to 4ft away (not tried further yet!) *yay* Socialisation and walks are still going well, and she played with an 11 month old Cocker Spaniel pup on her longline yesterday, which was sweet.

I really want her to learn lie down, but I've complicated it as when I try lure her downwards, she ignores the treat as she thinks it's 'leave it'! I might try having her on the couch and luring her by moving the treat all the way to the floor...hmm.

I need to put the pics and videos up but I am sooo tired - it's not even tea time yet!

Also, we are getting Kasper and Zoey new tags (well, Zoey doesn't have a tag lol, but Kasper needs a new one as Lyle's number has changed)

    Zoey's potential:

    And Kasper's:

Oh, a beautiful locket arrived for me today too! It's an acorn with a screw-top, meaning I can put things inside it for safekeeping. I have some of Kasp's fur in it and Milly's ashes, so they can be with me every second of every day

Kate, EBT have been my favourite breed since I was a tiny little kid. I lovelovelove the breed, but resigned myself to never having one as they're hardly ever in rescue and have lots of health issues...a cross Staffy would be so sweet!

    Thanks TM!!

Training videos, first counter conditioning her to her harness. These clips were taken over a period of 3 days

And teaching her lie down. She can do it 100% of the time now, but only on high surfaces!!! I need to get her to understand it works on the floor too...I wanted her to know it by training class tonight but maybe not haha!

Zoey in her crate eating a meal. She has a new ultra thick fleece in her crate now, which she loves. I might have to get Kasper one because his sister loves it so much!

    Keeper of the hens

All vets *should* be like this one...I'm amazed that we found her, but even more amazed it took us this long!Seriously, she puts all the other vets to shame and makes some of them look downright cruel! I mean, how many vets must treat nervous or anxious dogs?! But most owners don't expect vets to be gentle or patient with them, it's just a pick 'em up, pin 'em down and dodge the teeth job! I won't have anyone treating Kasper roughly or making his anxiety worse...and we've finally found a vet that not only respects that but understands where I'm coming from, and is willing to put the effort in too!

One of the things I loved about her was that she asked if he was aggressive, due to his fear. Instead of waiting to get bitten and then have the owner say "Oh, he's never done that before!" or even worse "Yeah, that happened to our last vet too...naughty boy!" she asked ahead what his reaction would probably be...and I was able to say he'd never shown any signs of aggression. I can understand vets getting annoyed and being rough / weary around dogs that are reported as being 'fearful', after all that could mean a dog bite...but pinning a dog and treating it rough is more likely to lead to one of those anyway!!!

CC, she thinks it's either a fatty lump like Lynn said, or a chunk of scar tissue from a Zoey nip! Kasper is using this as evidence for his abuse and the fact his sister should be returned!!! :tooth:

Zoey is almost going on Kasper's shortest walk currently! She goes about half the distance in the forest (on-lead, so no running) and back...it lasts about half an hour in all. She's very tired afterwards! ;)

We loved the snow the other day! Kasper showing off his speed

    Thankyou everybody

Zoey continues to thrive, we have been working on paw and she does it with a verbal command now which is awesome! Kasper has had some lovely days recently, the day before yesterday we really tired him out, we took him off-lead through the forest by the canal, joined the canal to Saltaire, walked through Roberts Park, crossed the road and up to Shipley Glen, through the woods to the forest near us, then we took the higher path up to Gilstead before walking back to our house!! I wish I'd taken my camera as there was some beautiful scenary, but it was a spur of the moment walk

Kasper has been very playful with Zoey today, I'm wondering if it's because he didn't do as much running on his walk because it was really hot here today (yes, even though it was snowing two days ago!!!), so he had more energy to bug her...not that she minded!

We're finally getting Zoey to eat more...feeding her twice a day (instead of the advised 3x for a pup under 6 months) has actually encouraged her to eat more, and mixing tastier grubin kibble has helped a little too. Stupid scrawny girl *rolls eyes*

Hahahahaha CC surely that must get annoying?! And nope, mine doesn't talk or make any noise...it's just when we first got her I wanted to train her to feel comfortable having a huge weird thing pointed at her...and now she poses at any opportunity!! :tooth:

My proudest thing to date: I HAVE TAUGHT KASPER TO PLAY THE PIANO!!! :rolling:

Well, keyboard, but same difference  I am so proud of him, he is such an amazing dog! It took two 2 minute sessions to teach him this.

She will be 19 weeks old tomorrow, and this week had her first off-lead walk with her brother. How much she loves Kasper is just so sweet, she truly worships the ground he walks on. She ran up a mountain after him, and they did really well together. Today she had a separate walk from him, and recalled perfectly from playing with another dog when she was off-lead - WOW! :whorship:

Thanks all, I love telling people I have a dog that can play the piano!!! :rolling:

    Zoey is 5 months old tomorrow (I think, I'm losing track of the weeks what with walking so many dogs...), and her new tag arrived like an early birthday gift! This is the one we chose;

She loved the beef knuckle, her first bone. It was chewed down by Kasper then when it wasn't the size of her head we let Zoey have a chomp. Kasper is sulking now and won't chew it as he wants another :tooth:

Ah, the quality of the pics, that's down to MY NEW CAMERA!!! YAY! :woohoo: I bought a really nice camera, after wanting one for about 4 years, and could not be happier...I've been going a little pic crazy as a result!

Kate, yes, we have bookings for house-sitting two Cocker Spaniels, and do three walks a week with an elderly Cocker Spaniel (totally different family, just same breed of dog!) up on the glen, sometimes with Kasper too. It's not much but it just makes us feel busy all the time!! What with doing two separate walks ourselves, then walking to other people's dogs, walking back, doing another walk with Kasper and doing Kasper's Kitchen baking hahaha...crazy, I think my legs are getting even shorter with all the walking :rolling:

Thanks Lynn! Do you think she'll lose that 'puppy look' soon? It's gonna be so sad when she's a proper adult dog...not that I think she'll be that big! :tooth: She's finally putting on weight since being fed adult food, and her ribs don't stick out anymore, whoo!

This is her doing 'leave it', impressive as she's not 5 months for a week or so yet!

    Doing leave it

Can you tell she's put on weight?!

Oh, and we've been adjusting to a new family member these past few days. Moved her onto an old TV stand as Kasper was very excited with her to begin with, and Zoey was terrified!!!

     photo tort14_zps804856c4.jpg

    TADA!

     photo nose4_zps77c875a4.jpg

She's Lulu, a 7 year old deformed Horsefield tortoise. Her shell is very unnaturally shaped, as her first home abused / neglected her and fed her on cat food (remember their diet should be weeds!). Her shell will be 'baseball' shaped forever, but we love her regardless!

     photo tort30_zpsaf2f7a04.jpg

Zoey feeling a bit more confident

    She's put weight on!

Kasper's training to be calm around her

And, finally, we put Ron's ornament in memory of him in with Lulu too

    Hey buddy!

Oh, to give an idea of size, the cage is over 4 foot by 2 foot, and Lulu is about 6.5 inches!!! :gasp:

Lulu is lovely! Is there something odd at the back of her shell or is it just the angle of the photo? Did you get her from a rescue centre or word of mouth? I'm glad she's with you now and will have a proper diet and care.

My customer was late home and got in to find he'd been punished; the Georgian window frame had been chewed, as had a remote control and two kitchen rolls. Apparently two kitchen rolls go an awfully long way when shredded...

Yes, I'll try take a pic that shows it better. Half her shell is baseball shaped (the top half) and there's a ridge that separates it from the rest. That's from her first years when she was fed cat food.

Today the dogs went on their first proper off-lead walk together (as in there was no lead trailing behind Zoey for safety!). Kasper was an absolute superstar and did great at showing Zoey the ropes. He let her chase after him everywhere, jump on him and was generally amazing. Zoey had the time of her life (apart from one part when she lost Kasper and stood looking terribly sad and alone!) and also said hello to a Cairn Terrier beautifully. She was very tired after though and needed a ten minute carry on the way back!!!

    Who can resist this face?

If you look in the pic on the video (without pressing play), can you see the ridge about halfway up her shell, and the shell above that is pointier than it should be? It's supposed to be a very gentle curve, like Ron's was.

Both dogs are good here. Zoey can still only manage teensy walks which is annoying, and makes meeting other dogs harder, but we'll get there as she ages. Having said that today we made it up to the moor and did a 40 minute walk (she manages further with big bro to push her on!) and they had a great time. Zoey's recall and direction were good, Kasper was the perfect big brother looking after her - apart from when he lost her!! - and Zoey met several other dogs. She came back brown from the face down hahahaha

Tomorrow we're going to try take her alone, so hopefully she can make it all the way and copes well without her brother!

And, finally, Happy Easter from us here! Here's what the pups got

I re-organised the dogs' leads, collars and harnesses today too. They used to be kept on the coat stand by the door, but it always looked a mess, so I moved all our hats and gloves to a storage box and put all the dog things in there. It looks much better and seems to work well. Leads are at the back, harnesses to the left, and the rest are collars!
