She really does! Often I will be taking a photo of something, only to turn around and see Zoey sat at my feet, tail wagging expectantly!!

Finally got rid of our dreadful freezer today...well, got rid of meaning we dumped it in the garden until we can get someone to collect it! :tooth: Stupid thing just produces too much ice! It needs defrosting every few days otherwise it ends up so iced over the door doesn't shut, as you can see in the pics...of course Kasper thinks this is great and stands there chewing lumps of ice off it :rolling:

I've never seen a freezer like that - unbelievable!! Most councils will take them away for a small fee - maybe for free if you get benefits, they all vary.

It's ridiculous Kate, we just can't be bothered de-icing it every week anymore! Oh awesome, thanks for the info

    Thanks CC :tooth:

Aw Zoey was just jumping up at the table the tree is on and we couldn't work out why...she had seen one of her (unwrapped) Christmas presents, a Nylabone, and was trying to get to it!! Poor baby

For two days now Zoey has been eating two large meals a day...this is extraordinary! Normally it's difficult to get one bowl of food down her, now she's actually eating a bowl of kibble mixed with wet food in the morning, and soaked kibble in the evening  I assume it's the cold weather making her hungrier (she usually eats even less than normal in hot weather), but it's lovely having a dog with an appetite! Maybe we'll actually get some weight on her ;)

Oh also, I don't know if anyone remembers me mentioning Plaque Off? It's seaweed that you add to your dog's food, and it helps combat plaque, bad breath etc. We started using it about three weeks ago I think, and even though the majority of the reviews were very positive, I was skeptical.

However it's made a real difference to Kasper's teeth! Zoey's were white already, but Kasper's molars had plaque on them. Since using Plaque Off we can clearly see it has been reduced - in fact there's hardly any there now! And the doggy breath has been much improved too

Even better we've hardly used any of the tub, and that's for two dogs!

Is there a cat version of plaque off too?! My cats have stinky breath, especially kitten, and I don't fancy getting her to the vet for a scale and polish!

My Jenson is getting really fat this winter! He isn't eating any more than usual, and no more than the other cats, but he's really chunking up. We wondered if he was eating elsewhere, but I don't think he is as he's ravenous when he comes home, and I don't think eating mice would make him put weight on either. Long Leg Jim looks fatter too - he was terribly skinny in the summer so perhaps it is a seasonal thing.

Kate the Plaque Off we have says it is fine for cats too, you just give them less of it. We bought it from Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Proden-PlaqueOff-180g/dp/B003IWOZ76/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1418659044&sr=8-3&keywords=plaque+off

How long have you been using it Ollie? I'm hoping it will keep improving Kasper's teeth and help keep on top of Zoey's.

Added one of the old crates to the living room from the shed today. Zoey has been getting more unhappy about going into her crate at night (even though she gets a stuffed Kong), so I want to see if having it in the living room helps. Perhaps being able to nip in and out of the crate all day will help her feel more comfortable with it?

So we have a crate for Zoey in the living room, Kasper's is in the kitchen, and Zoey has a spare in the kitchen too! The reason for the spare is that when we have guests over Zoey is SO LOUD, and having her in the living room is a bit much...so when family or friends visit she will go into the spare crate in the kitchen!

That's cool Lynn  Awesome Ollie, glad it's working!

Zoey seems to be a fan of the crate in the living room *phew* Whenever I stand up she races into her crate because she know it earns her a treat haha! When we got back from walking clients dogs today she was lying down all sleepy-eyed, so looked to have settled well whilst we were out too.

I don't know what we'll do about having guests over, as she hates the crate in the kitchen...I don't think she likes the metal base :/ So if my parents or family members visit, we might have to have Zoey in the garden with Lyle and keep the visit brief, otherwise she likes to 'sing' for attention :tooth:

    Keeper of the hens

We can't take it out as the bottom of the crate is wired and would be uncomfortable. And we can't add blankets because Zoey rips / chews them and there's the risk of her swallowing them...I thought about getting some wood to cover it as a base (?), but I was worried she'd just gnaw her way through it and make herself ill...

She can spot any weakness, she's like a velociraptor! When a clip came undone on her last crate, she completely shredded the 'indestructible' plastic base...anything she can get her paws on she has to try and destroy - still, it has taught us to be tidy!
At the moment we're using the kitchen crate to keep our shoes in! :)

So she doesn't like the metal base but will destroy anything else? That's a difficult one! If you're using it temporarily when you have visitors could you just put her bed in there and then take it out when the visitors go? Can't you keep her out when there's visitors, or put her in the garden by herself? What about a plastic storage box from Ikea - they're cheap and they do a variety of sizes.

My childhood dog, Judy, used to go mental when people visited and would get so excited she would pee herself, but if she got a pet from them and then we just ignored her and told her to go sleep she take herself off and lie quietly. As soon as someone stood up she'd start again, but she'd settle down quite quickly again. Have you tried the 'bite the bullet' method?!

    Oh that's a great idea...can't believe I didn't think of that XD

When guests are over we'll just put this huge thick blanket we have in there. It doesn't matter if she tears it a little, but we'll be around to make sure she doesn't eat any!

Ignoring a dog until they're calm is a really useful training method, we use it all the time with both pups! In fact we're currently using it with Kasper to teach him we don't like whining before a walk  ...we'd need to work on behavioural adjustment training with Zoey, but it takes so long and so much effort I don't know if it's worth it...I'm also really hoping she'll calm down as she ages, Kasper used to be so wild with visitors but now (after minimal training) he's fab!

The problem with Zoey is she's so over-excited she can't follow commands, not even a simple 'sit'! And treats are no good as she's too worked up to care...we'd have to borrow a friend and start off outside with them 50 foot away, then gradually move closer as long as Zoey was under threshold and responsive. If it got too much, we'd back off again.

Eventually we should be able to be within a few foot of our friend with Zoey being calm, but this could take months to achieve and it's hard to find willing volunteers!!! :tooth:

So at the moment we just keep her separated, although she is allowed to love on the people that don't mind, like our friends and dad

Oh! Her harness arrived too! :woohoo::yay_jump:

It's way smaller than advertised, but I'm crossing my fingers that it fits her! It was a Large too, the biggest size they do?!

Anyway, I thought I'd try do a bit of work counter conditioning Zoey to the harness and see what her reaction was...SHE WAS FANTASTIC!!! Within minutes she was putting her head through the hole (which is the part she hates most), she did so well...she has always hated harness training, so this is huge

So for now she's wearing her old harness, and I'll work with her and her Christmas harness everyday to see if we can get her comfortable with it 100%

Zoey has definitely put on weight - she's not as 'ribby' anymore, it's lovely!

I need to work on getting her to step and sit on the scales so I can weigh her, I really don't know how much she weighs. She didn't eat both her meals yesterday, but we didn't feed her in the morning until later so I'm guessing that was why.

Still waiting to walk her before going to our friend's house; it's raining, we've been waiting all morning for a break in the weather!

Weigh yourself then pick her up and subtract your weight from the combined weight. Lyle will have to read it for you unless you think you can hold her and bend over and read the scales at the same time!

Posted the harness video and a few other pics of Zoey on a dog forum I'm a member of and she was a real hit! I can't think of anyone else who posts regularly who has a Staffy, in fact I only know one other member who has one, so they all absolutely adore her and want to take her home! :tooth:

Good job Kasper can't read or he'd be sulking

Also I picked out a book I fancied reading from the bookshelf yesterday...only to remember that as a puppy Zoey shredded the first 50 pages so it's unreadable!! Why on earth did we keep it?!

Well, tried to weigh Lyle and Zoey...it was really tough as the reading on the scales was bouncing all over the place, we need to buy some digital ones...

Anyway, weighing with Lyle we calculated she was 16kg. No way, when we first adopted Kasper he was 20kg and Zoey's tiny and skinny!

Worked on the scales with Zoey stepping on herself, but she couldn't fit on, aaargh! Got most of her on and she weighed 1 stone 9 pounds, so we're guessing she weighs about 12kg. That sounds more like it

Pups have been really cute today - Zoey has slept ALL DAY and Kasper has had a huge walk and slept most the day. Had a few play wrestles in among the sleeping which was cute. Also managed to wrap all the gifts with both dogs present, which was amazing! Kasper b*ggered off when I asked him to, and when Zoey finally got off the couch Lyle was able to keep her occupied and away from the wrapping process

    Keeper of the hens

The pups had a wonderful Christmas, although they only had a few gifts to unwrap - we thought it best not to let them unwrap the edible pressies!!

My parents got them a massive doggy hamper with all sorts of treats and awesome things in, including dog-friendly Christmas puddings and mince pies! Zoey opened her gifts on her own for the first time in her life (and enjoyed it so much she tried to unwrap everybody's presents!), and Kasper was hugely miffed when he unwrapped his Nylabone and gave me a look as if to say "Really? That's it??" Such a gracious, loving dog... :rolling:

We had a huge walk planned for Zoey on Christmas day, got her out and it started tipping it down within ten minutes; we had to turn and head home!

    *nods*

Seems like everyone loves snuggles here, when all three are in bed I end up majorly overheating because they're all just crammed against me! :tooth:

Lyle left me with Zoey the other night whilst he took Kasper out because she was asleep on the couch. Of course as soon as he left she flung herself off the couch and started being a right pain in the bum! So I filled the puzzle feeder up with stinky cat treats and let her at it...that kept her busy for all of three minutes!!

Problem is she isn't particularly food motivated, add to that the fact she actually has to work to get the treats out the ball, and she decided it just wasn't worth it. She's too impatient and lazy! She was doing really well with it too, but the treats still didn't come out fast enough for her.

After that we did some harness training and she did GREAT! Using sausage is the key of course; she was willing to let me drape the harness across her back (as if she was wearing it) then pull the leg strap between her front legs. Next step is to fasten a buckle and repeat for a few days...then I'll be fastening both buckles and she'll actually be wearing it!!!

Bought a new blanket the other day and of course the dogs had to inspect it...Kasper was really good, just a sniff and a tail wag (he obviously approved!). Zoey was the terror (well yes :001_rolleyes: ) and tried to rip it, chew it and dig at it. She stopped pretty quickly using a positive interrupter though, and both dogs have really enjoyed snuggling under it - even Kasper, who rarely snuggles under anything!

Prepare for a cuteness overload :tooth:

Not bad for £3 from a charity shop! Great shop too, supports a local dog rescue

    Thanks Kate :tooth:

Harness training is still going great with Zoey, can leave it on her for ten seconds easy, but still haven't worked up the courage to fasten a clip yet...really don't want to rush her, last time I rushed her (one time!!) she was so shaken I had to start the counter conditioning from scratch! :001_rolleyes:

She's doing my nut in at the moment as she's over-tired like a toddler. She's had harness training, obedience training, a puzzle feeder and an extra walk...result is that she's shattered but refusing to rest, so is going round the room being a pain!!

I'm on limited dog walks at the moment. We were told at our last appointment to limit my activity to one thing a day whilst my mood's up, and do no dog walks...and as we've had appointments all this week I've only been on one of Zoey's walks! It's so boring!!

Bought the pups some tripe wet dog food recently and they love it. Lyle, not so much...the stuff stinks!! We've been feeding Zoey an earlier meal of just tripe food with a handful of kibble and she's been scoffing the lot, then having a much larger meal later in the day.

Added some new tricks to the trick chart and both pups now know 27 commands! (I hate the word command, maybe I'll call them 'asks' instead!)

    Thanks Lynn :tooth:

It's rare Kasper will snuggle under covers, it's usually Zoey's thing. And funny you should say that, in many ways Kasper acts like a little child too!

WE BOUGHT KASPER A NEW HARNESS TODAY!!! :woohoo::yay_jump::cheerleader:

I am really excited about this, I've been drooling over it for ages...so many people on the dog forum I'm a member of have one and rave about it, and it looks awesome! It's the Ruffwear Front Range Harness (although you can use it as a 'normal' harness too, which we will do), and we ordered it in Pacific Blue for Kasper.

    The harness!

It's supposed to cost £40 - £45 with shipping, but we found it on a site for £34!

I wanted to get Zoey a matching pink one, but any harness that isn't fleece-lined has a tendency to rub her as her fur is so short

And she already has a spare harness so doesn't really need another...Kasper chewed the buckle of his Julius K9 whilst using it as a toy (idiot...) so only has his summer harness, the EzyDog Quick Fit, now.

    Agh, I can't wait!

Well we ended up taking Kasper on a very long hike today because...WE GOT SNOW!!!

Now it *never* snows here, this is the first time we have got a substantial amount of snow and it was awesome!

Unfortunately we had planned to take Zoey out for a rather large trek today, but as soon as we got out the snow turned into a blizzard and she was utterly miserable...see?

(sorry for the hideous wobbling it's the jitters!)

So we took her home after five minutes and swapped her for Kasper, who loves snow  We were out for about 90 minutes and went all over the place, and all really enjoyed ourselves. Kasper was an absolute star and even walked nicely when a cyclist passed within a foot of us...he used to go crazy for cyclists! :tooth:

Whenever it snows I'm really glad that we can't drive

Yes, she apparently hates snow. I'll add that to the long list of things she doesn't like!!

Something amazing happened today. Ever since Zoey was about 16 weeks old I've been trying to fade my hand signal for getting her to lie down. Previously I had to do this fantastically over-exaggerated sweep from my middle to the floor whilst saying "lie down", and she would.

Well, today was a total lightbulb moment! I don't know how it happened but now I only have to do a small karate chop to the ground, no words necessary, and she lies down!! Finally!

The pups have been play fighting too. It begun as ever with Zoey shoving her bottom in Kasper's face, which makes Kasper pounce on her every. single. time! He starts chewing on her neck (gently), and Zoey looks at us with such an disdainful expression...it's like, YOU were the one who started it!! :rolling:

When she sees we're not paying her any attention she launches herself at Kasper and hangs off his mane, and this continues for a good while. Eventually she gets bored and wanders off, so Kasper begins to play with me...this makes Zoey jealous, so she sprints back over, stands about two feet away, and makes the funniest noise I've ever heard! It's like a bark, except it lasts about 20 seconds and sounds like she's talking!!!

And then they play again :001_rolleyes:

IT ARRIVED! They only shipped it yesterday and Kasper's new harness arrived today

It's soooo good! Kasper looks so damn handsome in it, and he didn't mind wearing it or putting it on at all. The colour is fantastic and the harness feels really sturdy and well made. It also has several reflective strips to make walks in the dark safer. There is a hidden pocket to put the dogs' tags in, but I prefer to keep them out in the open...that way if Kasper escaped, people could find our information easily, whereas the hidden pocket is hard to find.

Getting it the right size was a pain as the way the buckles are designed changing the length can be difficult, but we got there in the end. I really wish Zoey could have a pink one!

Lynn, it's the Ruffwear Front Range Harness. You can get it in a range of colours and the head hole and girth are adjustable to make sure it's a comfortable fit. We certainly recommend it so far!

    Keeper of the hens

Started getting the new arrival used to the dogs today. I have to say, the pups have been INCREDIBLE!

Kasper, somewhat amazingly, hasn't looked twice at the bird. Even when Topaz was being vocal today, Kasper was slightly alarmed by the noise but not overly interested in the bird. Zoey on the other hand was rather excited, but with some body blocking and training distractions she got used to him really quickly. I'm impressed!

I also started training Topaz with the dogs, asking Zoey to jump on and off the couch, sending Kasper running across the room etc. He didn't seem to care at all. In the next few days I'll as Zoey to "speak" to see how he reacts to a bark, although he's heard her whining and shown no concern. Buying him a nightlight tomorrow to try and prevent 'night frights'; feels like caring for a small child!!

Also on a walk today Zoey made me very proud. A woman had been feeding the horses by the farm and was cooing at Zoey, and Zoey obviously wanted to say hello. I warned her that Zoey was muddy and would jump up, and she said that was fine as she was used to the other person's two Alaskan Malamutes jumping up!! :gasp:

So anyway, Zoey gets SO giddy and is greeting the woman...tail wagging like crazy, stood on back legs with her paws hugging the woman's arm, and trying to lick the woman's face. BUT Zoey didn't chew the woman's hands at all! Normally when she's so excited she will nibble the person's hands, but she didn't once!

This is awesome, and is hopefully because we have upped the training of getting her not to bite us at home

    Well, maybe sometimes ;)

Kasper's in my bad books, when they were playing he leapt onto the footstool where the keyboard is and snapped a key off. He then inhaled it and crunched it up before I could ask him to drop it...I've had this keyboard since I was about 15, I am not impressed :glare:

(he did drop the mangled key when asked, he didn't actually swallow it)

"A taste for Music"..CC, thanks for the laugh.

Chloe ripped up the towel I gave her to sleep on in her crate, she then got her foot caught in it and twisted it up...when I came in to get her up this morning I was afraid she was going to loose her foot, it was wound up so tight. I managed to cut it off her little leg and it was alright...I almost had a heart attack when I saw what she had done. Now I don't know what to put in her crate tonight, for her to sleep on...to be so small she sure can get into big trouble.

Newspapers have already been tried..failure..all she did was pee on them and cry. I have several beds that I bought for her..she just drags them around..never gets in them. I gave her a nice new fleece baby blanket and she chewed a hole in it. I'm running out of ideas. It's hard to believe that something sooo small could make such a BIG mess. I need a straightjacket like they used for crazy people. maybe I could sew a tiny sleeping bag and zip her up in it at night, with only her head sticking out..LOL I thought about using a throw rug like I had for my Potbelly pig, but I'm afraid she would eat it.:face-sad:
