We currently have Sheba, Gourmet, Felix and two sorts of Whiskas in the cupboard. She doesn't get the same thing twice in a row if I can help it or we too get the 'I can't believe you're giving me THAT' look.

Likewise CC, but with 6 cats I have to try to make sure they all eat and it's getting very difficult. One likes fish, one meat, another hi-life pate, the old girl eats everything and the other two - pot luck on how they feel.

Video of Kasper at the bottom of the mountain!

It's yellow and I don't know why, stupid phone...

And some pics. We woke up to another gloriously sunny day (cold though, it's 2*C in that sun!) so took Kasper on a big walk, we were out just over 90 minutes.

Us heading towards the longest hilly field ever:

     photo sunday3_zpszosndvay.jpg

It doesn't look so bad here but wait for the top...

It looked so beautiful in the sun with the blue sky behind it

    Walking through the forest

     photo sunday11_zpslbzfp73c.jpg

Also I'm looking for a custom pet portrait for Lyle's birthday (not until end of May but I like to know what I'm doing!) and found this which I really like the look of - very different to the one of Kasper and Zoey:

    https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/219410013/border-collie-digital-dog-portrait?ga_order=price_asc&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=custom%20pet%20portrait&ref=sr_gallery_12

I'm just wondering how much it would cost to get printed though...I know it wouldn't be much just onto photo paper, and then I could frame it, but I have no idea how much it costs to print a photo onto canvas...I don't even know where to get it done!

    Keeper of the hens

Also Kasper met an off lead dog on a very narrow path; the dog was rude on approaching and Kasper was fantastic, he made me SO PROUD!

The other dog did that thing some Collies do from a distance, you know the Collie stare? Nothing against Collies at all but I think it must be very unnerving for dogs walking up to them – the dog hunkered down a little and just stared and stared and stared.

Kasper walked up to the dog SO calmly; his mouth was open in a loose grin, he looked away from the dog often (but not because he was nervous, to relax the other dog!), and his tail was in a wonderful loose sweeping wag.

As the other dog got closer it began licking its’ lips a lot and offering tons of calming signals. Normally we’d have moved to one side but the dog was off lead on a very narrow path and was walking up to Kasper, so we had no choice.

He said a really nice gentle hello, sniffed and wagged for perhaps 15 seconds, and then calmly carried on. I was ecstatic, and he got lots of treats

Happy to report that Raiden is back to normal - so relieved!

He wasn't sick at all yesterday, and he has done two normal poops now, yay! He's eaten several small meals of bread, pasta and pumpkin baby food, and although he never acted sick he is MUCH happier now and hasn't just been sat in a corner whining because he's hungry :rolling:

He's getting more, slightly longer walks too which he's enjoying, and today he did ABSOLUTELY AMAZING with another dog! Not saying hello though, but remaining calm, focusing on us, and doing training around it - even better

    Keeper of the hens

Aaaah I am getting the nicest comments today, thank you so, SO much   Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I started doing some work with Raiden today to help him be my emotional support / assistance dog...in the UK we don't have registered assistance / service dogs for people with mental illnesses, and it seems we don't have emotional support dogs.

I remember way back before we adopted Kasper I contacted a ton of companies asking if they helped match people with mental illnesses to assistance dogs, and all said there are no assistance dogs for mental illnesses in the UK, which I find absolutely disgusting.

Part of the reason we decided to bring Rey home was so that we could try our hardest to socialise him with people and places, and so that we could nail his training...we wanted as close to a bomb proof dog as possible in the hopes he could come with me various places and would be easier to manage than Kasper (size and fear of strangers means travel etc are difficult, he's not exactly reliable or easy!) and Zoey was too intense and strong on lead.

Even though we missed out on two months' of training and socialisation with Raiden because of Zoey, he's still doing AMAZINGLY well, and I think once he has reached adulthood and calms down he will rock...hopefully I will be able to walk him on my own in all sorts of places

But I also want to teach him to do various tasks that would be helpful, some of these are bringing me things (eg. a phone), some are getting Lyle's attention by barking, but others are ways he needs to interact with me.

As he's only 8 months old most his training is still to do with general obedience, being calm and focused around distractions etc, but today I started working on an interruption behaviour...basically when I have my head in my hands or hidden in my arms, Raiden is to come over and jump up at me, putting his front paws on my hands / head.

I thought about only asking him to bark or whine (which would be easier to teach him) but it would be easier for me to ignore that or tell him to shut up if I actually was feeling really bad...him jumping at me forces me to pay attention to him, means he has to touch me and there's more chance I will redirect onto fussing him.

We only did half a dozen repitions, but now when I have my head in my hands and mumble encouragement (what I say changes because there obviously won't be a verbal cue for this) he jumps up and puts his paws on my head

    So that's good.

And here's his default, very serious "I am being good" face :rolling:

Finally Kasper tried the natural herbal wormer we bought for the first time, too. Now most chemical wormers make him vomit, I'd say he is sick nine times out of ten and I don't remember what that one wormer was that didn't make him sick! Well, he had the natural wormer yesterday morning (so way over 24 hours ago) and he hasn't acted ill at all - no sick YAAAAAY!

     photo wormer_zpsgjtwdwp2.jpg

The wormer mixes up in his grub as well, which he *loved*!

Funny thing is Sootz is as bad I am sure we have a rule in our house. Bathroom only to be used with cat in attendance. He has even tried to sit on my lap little tinker. I usually put the cold water tap on a trickle as that fascinates him, He can not grip the fact that when he swipes at it his paw goes right through the flow and doesnt stop it.

Joey (who died a few years ago now) would race us to the bathroom. He would insist on having the tap on so that he could drink. Hated using a bowl! Most of my cats will come in the bathroom with me, but hate the flush of the toilet so they run as soon as I put the lid down!

Sootz is typical Maincoon cat he loves to paddle and mess around with water. We have to make sure the toilet lid is always down else he would be in there. Mallory loves him as he likes to sit on the side of the bath while she is in there, watching her pouring water from her plastic teapot into a funnel into cups and such. He scoops up the bubbles on his paw and flicks them about. She squeals with laughter and bath time isnt over till her hands are all pink and wrinkley

    Keeper of the hens

NN I used to despise little dogs, thought them all yappy and horrible...when we were looking to add a new pup to the family we talked a lot about small dogs for a variety of reasons; easy to transport, can be carried, they get away with more because people don't think there's as much reason to train them, they generally need less exercise, aren't as strong on lead etc etc.

We looked at a load of different breeds and sorted a top five (Havanese, Lowchen, Whippet, Toy / Miniauture Poodle and Bedlington Terrier - Border Terrier wasn't even on the list!!), and went to several animal shows where I ran around like a crazy dog lady asking people about their dogs :rolling: It wasn't until I saw a few Border Terrier puppies that I started considering the breed - I have hated them since I was a young teen and a friend had an aggressive one that would pee all over you, but I separated that dog from the breed and we worked out it was a breed that could really work for us...along came Raiden

If you do seriously consider getting a pup I'd love to talk breeds and stuff...I looooove the excitement of adding a dog to the family :rolling:

Posted By: chief chickenRaiden has quite seduced me and I'd definitely consider a border terror if I was ever thinking of a dog. Go on, NN...

I'm in love with almost every aspect of Rey CC...he's not an easy dog by any means, but because of our past experiences he seems easy to us!

He is fairly lazy - three 30-40 minute walks a day and some play in the house and he will sleep the rest of the day away in his crate, he's bright and eager to please when you have his attention but he can take some persuading that you are better than the environment (then again he IS an adolescent!). He gets / got insanely excited by any and all distractions, but with lots of hard work the progress has been outstanding.

He is unbelievably impatient...it took until it was 8 months old for him to be able to manage a 5 second stay!! If he wants something he will begin whining for it after just a few seconds (say if we are making a Kong for him for example) and that is after a lot of impulse control training. He is vocal, and if he loses his head over something on a walk it can be hard to get him to reset himself...but he's come a hell of a long way, he loves us to bits, and he oozes happiness and love. Plus he is very fun to train ;)

He is THE perfect dog for me, and as much as I love Kasper and Zoey, I do feel differently about Raiden. I don't love him any more, and I always said Kasper was my heart dog...but there's just something about Raiden, it feels different.

I must admit I always used to love larger dogs and used to own a rough collie (like a lassie only I had the golden colour.) He was the most fantastic dog ever. But they do need lots of exercise and grooming. I think if we did have a dog now it would have to be the sort that can walk a long way when necessary but be content for several small walks for most of the time,

He is a very good boy, unlike my Sootz cat this morning.... I went out to clean Chewbacca's house it just needed a tidy really as she is a clean old bird. Anyhow I moved her laying box out to change the bedding and as I did so a mouse ran right up my arm down my body and leg it sat on my shoe for a moment before I called for Sootz. He just sat there and gazed at me with his large golden eyes and then decided he had to play the banjo!!!!! Daft cat. I sent GN straight out to get some of those blue blocks. He stuffed them well under the hen house so hopefully they will sort the problem out.

    Keeper of the hens

Such a lovely way to put it NN :) Yes, I don't think enough about the progress we've made but when someone points it out and I remember how he used to be it's phenomenal...I need to put more effort into muzzle training (had a breakthrough recently where for the first time he would wait with his nose in the muzzle instead of whipping it out) and start taking him to the vets, walking in, treats, then leaving. The last one is hard because you never know if the waiting room's gonna be full and you can never trust the staff...Kasper is nervous enough at the vets (must be the smell as he's never been treated at this one) so all it takes is the receptionist coming over, leaning above him and stroking his head and it's all ruined...

We'd made loads of progress with his fear of the vets, he even had his foot treated with no fear when he cut an artery, but then the next day we had to leave him for his operation...afterwards all the vet staff acted a little off - they said he did really well, then when I expressed my annoyance at him being brought out of his kennel for the operation by a man (which I specifically asked them not to do) they said "oh yes, he is very nervous of men isn't he"...anyway, I don't know what went down but ever since then he has hated the vets and freaks anytime we go in one; stress whining, stress panting, pacing, ignoring treats etc. Even if we just sit in the empty waiting room then leave.

That's why it's so important to keep training moving in the right direction, one thing can set you back years...a lot of people don't understand or think about that.

hats the magic word (I said that to Aurelia a few years back and she said abracadabra. I so miss her) I think all animals hate the vets and get fearful its the smell and strange atmosphere of the place. I hate the Doctors and Hospital and will do anything rather than go. Animals have higher senses than us so I fully understand their fear

With the right socialisation and training NN you can have dogs that love the vets - we got Kasper to a point where he was fine at the vet, even when the vet was examining and bandaging his cut artery - then we left him for that op and it was ruined

Zoey didn't mind the vets at all, and Raiden is fine if wildly excited and thrilled to see people...we missed out on the most important period of time to train him to be calm and mannerly at the vets (stuck in with Zoey at the time :( ) but Rey had no fear last time we went, he just wanted to kiss everyone!

It's all about showing the dog the vets is a wonderful and safe place to be, but when all they get is negative experiences of course they'll be scared there - most dog owners only take them when they need injections or operations, whereas we want to take our dogs just to pop in and feed treats...Kasper's much harder because he's fearful already, but if we'd had the chance with Rey we could have probably made it so that he loved the vets his entire life...it's gonna be much harder now as we missed out on training, and getting him to focus on us and be calm around distractions is MUCH different at 6-8 months old than 4 months, but we should be able to get it to the point where he enjoys going to the vets even if he isn't so calm there

    Keeper of the hens

Raiden would like to take you all on a walk today, to show you just how good he is!

Remember firstly he is a Terrier, a group often said to be independent and impossible to train. Secondly he is 9 months old, he's a proper adolescent now and should be on his worst behaviour right now...well, he is an ANGEL!

Video starts with him walking beautifully on lead - I never trained him to do this, he did it all himself and I simply fed him treatsto reward him for being good!
1.30 he is off lead and a Beagle to the right of us barks - Raiden remains calm and focuses on us, we lead him up easily...so good ^__^

I know I say it a lot, but you can't understand how amazing this dog is, and how much I love him...I thought Kasper was my heart dog, and I would never love another dog as much as I loved him, but Raiden is something else!

We were so lucky to bring him home, and I don't know what I'd do without him...even on the worst days he can make me smile. It's hard to explain, but Raiden is the first dog who has helped me far more than I have ever helped him.

Our final lead patches arrived today. Raiden isn't a registered service dog (you can't get them in the UK for mental illnesses) but he helps me immensely outdoors, and the hope is that with these patches we won't have people approach us, let their kids run at us etc.

And finally here's a photo of Kasper relaxing right next to the bunny girl!

     photo chill_zpsvhbjnmf2.jpg

He is unimaginably calm with Aubree, and I don't understand it - when we had Lenny a few years back, we tried to let Kasper see him from the top of the garden (about 15ft away) and Kasper was lunging, whining, couldn't focus on anything else etc...he's really calmed down in these few years, and I knew that, but I never thought he could live happily in the same room as a rabbit!

I wish that was the explanation NN, but if he got chance Kasper would definitely kill and eat Aubree!! He has a lot of self control now, so he can live next to her crate with absolutely no issues - I am very proud of him for this and it's really great - but I won't push him too far. I'll probably never have Kasper in the room while she's in her pen, but it's no bother

Video of me teaching Raiden to be calm and settled in the house...he still can't sleep out of his crate, but he will settle to do puzzle feeders etc, so we're doing far better than when he was younger.

He also has zero impulse control, so you can see we are slowly building up his 'stay'...we have gone from him whining the second I put him into a sit to a ten second stay. He's nine months old now, at this age Kasper was able to hold a stay for over a minute, but where Raiden excels at a lot of things Kasper couldn't, his patience is terrible :tooth:

    Keeper of the hens

    Raiden was amazing yesterday.

I was in the house on my own and went into the kitchen to let Rey out, and I noticed Tilt was really ill...as in, needs to be PTS ill. I was heartbroken. Tilt is my favourite guinea pig, I've never had a pig like her...not only is she utterly adorable looking, but she is the sweetest, most loving piggle too. Not only was she dying, but she was far too young, she was only about 6 months old
    :(

I took Raiden upstairs and gave him a puzzle feeder whilst I phoned Lyle, who was out buying food with our friend. After I'd hung up I sat on the stool and put my head in my hands, because I was upset, and the service dog training really paid off - Raiden immediately came over, jumped up to interrupt me, then began licking my face when I moved my hands. It was INCREDIBLE, and the first time he'd done it outside of a training scenario

He then kept me focused with play or training, and I was doing much better by the time the others got back. THEN we let Rey go say hi to our friend (first person he has said hi to in months, since our friend didn't do very well and we had to put a lot of work into teaching Rey to be calm around people) and Raiden was awesome!! He came away from our friend every time we asked, did sits etc, even when he was really excited...he did better yesterday than he used to, even before we had the bad experience (:

There you go, training pays off and Rey is / will be an awesome support dog!

Anway, some pics from today after a very soggy walk ;)

    Keeper of the hens

Me and Kasp woke up early today so had a few games of (fairly) quiet tug whilst everyone else slept. This disintegrated into rough and tumble games...both my pups love to wrestle, and they have awesome bite inhibition so I have no problem with them mouthing me as I shove 'em about

    After playing, Kasper was tired

     photo mydog1_zpspkso0fov.jpg

But if I tried to move away, he pinned me :sarcastic:

     photo mydog_zpsdxc64lwq.jpg

Then he begged for belly rubs. I obliged...

Training video of Raiden at 9 months old.

It was raining on his morning walk, so we hid under some shelter and used brain games to keep him active and use up some energy...love the touch game for that! I don't have many photos of Raiden to post as I haven't seen him much this weekend, he has a tendency to stand / spring off my knees, and with a sore knee that didn't seem like a wise idea haha...so he's been getting walks and time downstairs. Did get this adorable pic of the little goofball though

We did some muzzle training...after about a year of work he's getting to the stage where he holds his face in, and I guess in a few weeks we'll begin moving our hands towards his head as he's in there to work towards fastening it!

Thanks Lynn, nothing much cuter than Kasper in a t-shirt :rolling:

Raiden turned 10 months old a few days ago!

We celebrated by giving him lots of fuss and walks, it was actually my first big dog walk on uneven ground so it was exciting for both of us

    Enjoying the view together

He is, he's a good egg really :) Had a horse charge us the other day (it heard sheep being fed a few fields over and started running towards the gate where we were) and Rey did really well. The horse was being noisy and had its' head over the gate directly above Rey, Rey was excited from the running so he yapped once or twice, then came away and did some training

Hoping that experience with the horse won't set him back any as he's done really well at being calm around them

There are some horses who love to tease dogs..I've had a couple who had no greater pleasure in the world than to get a dog to run around the outside of the fence. Sissy has a wonderful time getting Frodo to run with her. When Frodo gets tired and stops, she walks over to the fence and gives him a big slobbery kiss.

Had the horse that bit me approach and follow us twice through the field yesterday after it had completely ignored us several times in the days before. It is scary having a horse that size follow you, and I also don't think we can take Raiden through that field again because after the gate incident he was already more excited with the horses, and then when the black one approached he was actually pulling towards it...really sucks as it means we have no access to our favourite walks again, but I'm not willing to risk being bitten a second time or have my dog trampled...

Got a little bit of footage of Rey being fab around Aubree today (we don't keep her crate covered at all from either of the dogs now!), Rey was hilarious today though...first he was digging at her crate for her food, and then he was licking her face through the bars!!!

This is the pen where Kasper sleeps at night. He's banned from the bed (when we're in it) now because he insists on trying to lie horizontally ON TOP OF US, so he sleeps in his little doggy jail with his princess tent :rolling:

     photo pen_zps4kptgsit.jpg

And we've created handy storage by raising the rat cage on top of an upside down storage box, so that the rats / Rey can't tease each other...Rey will go over to say hi and Donnie will reach through the bars and grab him :sarcastic:

Hope the rats don't get hold of Rey - those teeth ... ow!! (He'd stay well clear afterwards though!)

Kate that's actually why we had to move the rat cage on top of the storage box, because it was a nip waiting to happen - Donnie's a grabber and assumes everything he gets hold of is food, so Rey would definitely have been bitten!

We haven't been troubled with ticks here, but they are around, they just haven't shown up on any of my critters...yet. I do keep a close eye on everyone though.

Touch wood we haven't had anymore Lynn, but it's got us jumping every time a bit of fluff gets stuck to the dogs' fur :rolling: We were walking Raiden in a field of long grass today and it's surrounded by horses and sheep; the entire way round Lyle said afterwards all he was thinking was "I bet there are so many ticks in here..." :rolling:

Kasper was in my serious bad books yesterday. Not only was he being an arse all day no matter what we did with him, but later in the evening he stole a broccoli stalk off a bookshelf that we'd been giving to the pets. I asked him to drop it / trade it for treats, and he wouldn't - he wouldn't drop a bloody broccoli stalk for the air dried fish that he loves!!!

I got really cross because he's happily traded all sorts of food before, so I told him to get out the room. When he didn't budge I got louder and firmer, and he walked off growling...he hasn't resource guarded in so long, and it was over a damn broccoli stalk...that after a day of him being obnoxious too!!

I'm guessing it has something to do with the weather, this heat is making us all grouchy...

We had to turn back after about 25 minutes on Raiden's walk this morning, the heat just killed him...I wondered if he had a thorn in his paw at first because he'd only been off lead for 10 minutes, but nope it was that sun!

Here's a photo from the other day taken with my new phone

     photo newphonecuterey_zpsisktzmvf.jpg

With that said, here is my little pain-in-the-arse boy...I told him if he carries on we'll give all his birthday presents to Rey :rolling:

    Keeper of the hens

Took Boo on a 'you WILL be tired' walk today. It seems the heat has turned Kasper into an absolute turd in the house, so today we took him on a gigantic hike early on, to try tire him out. We had to walk him on a route with lots of swimming holes, because even though it wasn't 10am yet it was already 23*C!

     photo meltywalk3_zpsqxj93hhn.jpg

    First after-dip roll!

     photo meltywalk1_zps98n7cie1.jpg

This photo seems rubbish, but I like it for Kasper's expression, goofy lip and the water droplets flying off him...

     photo meltywalk2_zpsolcj6zxw.jpg

He took a dip in a watering hole, a stream, and then we got to his *favourite* place - THE POND!!

     photo meltywalk9_zpslvdjw5hz.jpg

Kasper had a splash and a swim, and he was ready to go...but wait!

     photo meltywalk4_zpsjz3l6qci.jpg

How about we go back, tie him to a sturdy tree...

     photo meltywalk8_zpsdidwle6s.jpg

    ...and we'll all paddle together!!!

     photo meltywalk6_zps1kjxkkk4.jpg

We all went in and had fun, and everyone felt much cooler afterwards ^__^

     photo meltywalk10_zpsojg7sshd.jpg

    Time to head home!

     photo meltywalk12_zpswfr9mdht.jpg
And video of Kasper's splashy swimming too :)
