    Christmas day pics here! :D

Both pups have gnawed the antler so much it is so small we had to throw it away tonight to prevent anyone swallowing it. They love their antlers so much!

Got a treat for the dogs today...chicken feet, ewww!!!

We found them somewhere where they looked much more chickeny and natural, and they were half the price we paid before...the dogs love them so why not?

Must start making sure Kasper has two long walks a day, what he's been having the last few days really isn't enough, we've just been out everyday...he's coped like a real trooper bless him and done great settling in the house, despite having half his usual daily exercise.

My parents and possibly nana are coming up tomorrow (yayyayyayyay!) shame they can't see the pups as Zoey especially would love to see them

Omg just had to shut both dogs in the bathroom (with me) for 40 minutes whilst oven man came and plumbed in the oven...never seen the dogs so upset in their lives, jeez louise!

We had Kasper barking and growling because a strange man was in the house (fair enough). But I didn't expect both dogs' extreme whining as if I was torturing them, or the frantic very loud playing, or Zoey gnawing on me because she was stressed...then Kasper found the smallest scrap of cardboard ever and just had to resource guard it.

You'd think the stressful event was us moving house again rather than just being shut in a bathroom!!!

Now both dogs are wandering around the house picking up shoes and counter surfing to relieve stress and I'm covered in gnaw marks...think Lyle definitely had the easy part helping the guy in with the oven!!

Is that a real chicken's foot or a toy one?!
Sounds like the dogs are feeding off each other's anxiety. The problems Kasper had as a puppy will always be with him and will surface from time to time, but you are so good with him you'll bring him back to calm again pretty quickly I'm sure. Its not the sort of thing you can expose them to regularly to get them used to it either!

No, they're real chicken feet, the dogs LOVE them! :)

I don't know what it is about the bathroom but both dogs hate to be shut in there. We often have one of the dogs in there whilst I have a bath and they spend the entire time whining and pacing...I need to bring treats and chews up to get a positive association I guess!

A trail of dog sweeties leading all round the house then in the bathroom will do; it'll have to be walkies next time a person comes in to fix anything!

I wonder if putting a bed in there would help, plus then I could teach a go to bed command...you're right though, dog sweeties are definitely needed! Although I don't think I could handle walking both dogs on my own!

Zoey is giddy as a kipper today but we can't take her out as it's raining. She hates the rain and just looks miserable the entire walk, lagging behind, so there's no point taking her out. Would a coat make a difference? Although then I'd have to spend months counter conditioning her to it and she'd still probably end up hating it!!

Red, I think you have to start putting coats on dogs when they are little and some of them NEVER let you dress them. My first dog a, little Schnauzer, loved clothes. Every other dog, since her, won't let me put a coat on them at all. The only time I tried to put a coat on my little Jack Russell she froze up like a statue, wouldn't take a single step. She stood in the backyard like that for 45 minutes, till I gave up and took it off her...so all I can say is Good Luck.:face-smile:

I'm hoping Zoey doesn't actually NEED a coat as she never acts cold on a walk (plus getting a coat on her would be a nightmare...). She just hates the rain!

Zoey is the same Lynn, we put a coat on her when she was younger and it was snowy and she stood in a corner, trembling and whimpering. It was so sad! I mean she still hates having her harness put on and we do that every day, and I've spent hours working with her on it!!

    Dogs eh?!

Here's the madam herself awaiting the new year :)

Oh I forgot to say! For the first time since Zoey was *5 months* old, we have had to make her harness bigger - not once, but twice!! She is finally getting some weight on her, yay!

She's actually at a healthy, ideal weight now rather than underweight... knew she'd get there some day ;)

She may have peaked before midnight hahaha :rolling:

Hahaha! Kasper's quite chunky nowadays and he used to be skin and bone when he was younger...he gets fed about 2/3 what we feed Zoey and is walked more than she is too!

A week or so ago I did some impulse control training with Zoey. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while because if anybody does something even vaguely exciting (jump, walk quickly etc etc) she would get totally over excited, leap madly at them and grab onto their clothing, which can hurt if she accidentally nips your skin too.

This is after one 2 minute training session

And the next day with both dogs (I did the same training with Kasper years ago)

And finally some 'go to bed' training from this evening. I don't need to point her to the bed anymore, and she will wait there on command until released. Not bad at all!

Look at her weight in the last video too, barely any ribs showing!

My cats are happy to be in the bathroom until I shut the door, then they cry and dig until I let them out. I know they hate the toilet flush (understandable) but just shutting the door is enough to upset them. It's odd because Foggy loved to be in there with me and sat and waited every time I had a shower.

Zoey was here to "help", just as she was when we were putting it up too. She kept stealing decorations from the box and chewing on the branches haha! She's a bit crazy today though as she has a tummy upset so hasn't been walked or fed much...leads to a crazy hyper puppy apparently :P

I have a hilarious video I need to upload of Kasper playing with an orange. It's brilliant, he's tossing it all over the shop...I'll try get it off my camera and onto the computer tomorrow

Yesterday we started walking a Bulldog, we will be walking her four times a week and doing half an hour's training after the walk too. She's adorable and really smart, yesterday she learnt stay, lie down and leave it - all in half an hour! We spent today proofing it...she's a very slobbery little girl haha

Tomorrow we are meeting a 10 week old puppy and showing the owners how to train him. We'll be doing basic obedience with him once a week, so that's super exciting!

Then in a few weeks time I'm off back to Yorkshire to show some family members how to train and behave around their 16 week old Airedale puppy. They're struggling with his jumping up, puppy biting, toilet training and general obedience training so I'll be giving them a few tips and showing them how to use a clicker.
    Fun times! :)

    Keeper of the hens

Zoey had a really eventful walk today. We met a really rude but very giddy young Patterdale Terrier that refused to walk home unless we walked alongside it!! Thankfully we were able to walk Zoey on the road as it was really quiet, so she didn't have to interact with it too much!

Then we rounded a blind corner and bumped into a really aggressive dog that almost got a hold on Zoey (this is why I recommend muzzles for seriously aggressive dogs, it's safer for everybody involved...) but Zoey did great and ignored the dog other than wagging a little.

On our walk in the forest there were tree surgeons removing some of the trees as there is a disease affecting some of the trees in the forest. They were making loads of noise but Zoey coped marvelously and didn't bat an eye! In the field she got to see sheep close up for the first time ever (she's only seen them through a fence before, and even then it was long ago). She was VERY happy to see the sheep, especially because she got to practically herd them along the path as we were going the same way as them ;)

And, finally, on the walk home a gaggle of screaming children came running at her, but thankfully I managed to fend them off, otherwise they would have been covered in mud and slobber!! :tooth:

Did you know that January is Train your dog Month?

I am working with both dogs sitting on their back legs and balancing, sending Zoey to her bed, getting her to touch a mouse mat with her nose, and desensitising them to having all their body squeezed and handled to make vet checks easier

Lynn I bet you do a lot of training this month!! :rolling:

In some ways I can't believe it's been so long, whilst in others it feels like it has been so much longer! She's having a lovely day, a huge walk to tucker her out (she's asleep on the couch now!) and we're baking her some lovely tasty goodies later in the day too.

She's an incredible dog, she's smart, cute, loving, loyal and so friendly. Here's to many more years together!

Kate, I'm not sure what size Frodo will turn out to be.. short, long bodied Border Collie, built like a tank probably. We'll just have to wait and see. I don't think he will have the upright ears of the Corgie, that I was hoping for. I don't care really, I just love him to pieces.

    Keeper of the hens

Ugh we have been so busy recently what with walking dogs, hospital visits and training dogs...I am pooped!! :sleep1:

This weekend I am off back to Yorkshire to train a family members' puppy...that should be interesting and very fun too!

Had a lovely walk with Kasper today to the forest outside the village, he said hello to three very polite dogs and really enjoyed his wander.

Zoey was such a pain last night whining in her crate!! Normally she will whinge for 2-5 minutes and then shut up, and that's fine...she has nothing to whinge about; she has toys, a Kong stuffed with food, and loves her crate. We'll accept a bit of whinging  Oh not last night! I think because she had slept quite a bit in the evening she wasn't ready for more sleep, so she whinged off and on for about half an hour, it was so annoying!

I'm contemplating moving her crate upstairs at night / buying another crate so she can sleep by the bed, but she'd then get left in the morning as we walk Kasper before letting Zoey out of her crate...hmmm :confused1:

Oh some pics from Zoey's walk yesterday...she didn't appreciate me taking a photo of her sniffing, look at those pinned back ears!!

    Keeper of the hens

Well, Zoey had another noisy night last night!

So tonight we are going to carry her crate upstairs and have her sleep by the bed, and see how she does with that. It should hopefully help calm her down and encourage her to sleep, although we used to sleep beside her up until she was about 20 weeks old and she still had whingey nights then :tooth:

This means we have to put up with Kasper hogging 90% of the bed and Zoey snoring right next to us - hooray! ;)

Doesn't she look too peaceful to snore though?!

Also, check out the nylabone we got for Zoey last October!! She has another one (that we originally bought for Kasper when we first adopted him, but he was never that interested), well it started off about 9 inches long and Zoey has gnawed it down to just 2 inches in a year!!

Omg! Now, whilst we took Kasper for a walk (Zoey had just been walked), Zoey has somehow managed to shred the plastic base of her crate...she trotted out very happily when we returned and proceeded to chew the nylabone THAT WAS IN HER CRATE WITH HER!! Hahaha she certainly likes to keep us on our toes!!

We will be buying another crate tomorrow, and hoping she doesn't do the same to that one...!

I know, she's an angel, right?! :rolling:

Lynn, these methods are great for using for pups that jump and nip, it's basically what I taught everyone yesterday to do with Ralph

I know a lot of people actually tether their new puppy to them haha so that the pup can't get up to mischief whilst they are busy doing something else. We never tried it with Zoey but that's always an option too!

I'll bet Frodo has grown some already? How long have you had him now?

Well, we have a new crate (with a metal base ;) ) coming for Zoey haha! We've gone back a few steps in her crate training too and are re-teaching her to really love the space...not that she really seems to need it, I mean here she is sitting in her crate with the door open, patiently waiting for her treat haha

Yesterday with Ralph the Airedale Terrier puppy went really well. We did so much work with the family members and they all seemed really open and willing to change what they had been doing. Ralph was adorable and actually better behaved than I was expecting, by the time I left I was able to run, skip and jump around the room whilst he just sat there waiting for his treat! I just hope they keep up with the training ;)

Here is a video of Kasper and Zoey rough housing today...notice the total lack of attention paid to their surroundings and the wake of destruction they leave :rolling:

And some more pics of Zoey doing really well with her crate...bless her she doesn't even mind being in there despite having to lie on a wire bottom (with a big thick blanket of course ;) . The other night she sat in there for about an hour because she knew every 15 minutes or so she would get a treat :tooth:

And then we have a pic of Kasper doing 'leave it' with some treats, and crunching down a chicken foot too...yum!!

Feeding time at the zoo!

They usually get fed out of puzzle feeders or have their kibble scattered on the floor, so when the bowls come out they know they're generally being fed together. We feed them together occasionally to keep up positive associations with each other even when eating and to practice polite behaviour.

We don't feed side by side or even particularly close, as I don't like either of those. One usually gets fed in their crate and the other about four feet away, with me stood in the middle in case I need to body block either of them, which I very rarely do. Kasper eats faster than Zoey, so he's the one who needs to politely wait until she's finished up...he does great! I haven't needed to stop him going over to Zoey's bowl while she was eating since she was a tiny puppy

In general I don't like feeding two dogs together. I like them to practice polite behaviour should it ever need to happen, so they are used to it, but I prefer to feed them separate.

Squee! Lyle just let me buy Zoey a new harness, leaving her other as a spare, and it's the same sort (EzyDog quick fit harness) but instead of blue camouflage it's candystripe, it's sooo cute!!!

She's gonna look so adorable in that ^__^

Kasper is also a nekkid boy in the house now after being choked whilst playing, as Zoey got her teeth stuck around his collar (that is why we use snap release collars instead of actual buckle collars) but now we have moved his tags onto his DoxLock harness so he still has them for walks.

I want to buy Kasper another DoxLock harness (possibly a red one) but sssh don't tell Lyle!

You know, I've always hated the colour pink, but since getting Zoey...she just HAS to have pink things!! I get so girly over her haha...can't wait for the harness to arrive!

Her new crate came today, hooray! If we'd have bought a smaller size from a local pet shop it would have cost £54 with a plastic tray. We bought one with a metal tray online, a size bigger, for £30 (including £7 for express delivery). How good is that? I just hope the crate is well made.

Zoey cut her paw on a beer bottle some idiot had managed to smash on both sides of the pavement and all across the road, so there was no escaping it. It only bled a tiny bit and, after a brief chew, she has left it alone. She only had one short walk yesterday to give it chance to heal, but she had a proper walk today and it didn't open up so I imagine it will be fine.

Look at my two bare-necked pups, it's so strange! And Kasper looking smexy in his DoxLock harness ;)

No CC, thankfully it's a very clean cut and not very deep at all. I think we're just gonna have to say no walks for today and possibly only a short one tomorrow. She's keeps chewing at it though so we're trying to prevent that!!

Kate, they're both so beautiful, I'm so glad to have them

Well, guess whose new harness arrived today now that she can't go for a walk?? Booo! :beaker:

It's soooo cute though! I really want to put it on her for a photoshoot haha but it feels kinda cruel seeing as she doesn't like it AND she wouldn't be getting a walk...so we'd better get Kasper to try it on instead ;) :rolling::lol:

Posted By: chief chickenRich tea? A biscuit of some sort, I reckon. She looks splendid in her new togs!

It was indeed a piece of rich tea biscuit (vast majority are vegan, yummy!) it was *hilarious* trying to get a pic of her catching it

We had a friend come over last night and, seeing as Zoey's crate is now in the living room, we were very worried about how noisy she would be. She did have her moments whinging, but on the whole she did really well...she did have new toys, a stuffed Kong and a new antler in there though, so that could have been why!! ;)

We let her out for about 20 minutes at the end of the night and, because she had her new antler in her gob, she was really well behaved with our guest! She didn't jump up and cover him in slobbery kisses, she just circled him and prodded him with her antler!! :rolling:

She's finally getting used to having her new harness on, and isn't quite as terrified. We had a real kerfuffle yesterday, another truly scary experience...when we put her harness on she likes to go scrape against every piece of furniture (because she is a fool  ) well yesterday she scraped against her crate, and managed to get caught on the door locks!!

This resulted in her bucking away like crazy, with the crate clattering along behind her...aaagh!!! Scared both of us silly, we thought we were gonna have to cut through her brand new harness but we got it off eventually...she was really good whilst stuck to the crate too, even though she must have been petrified...

Needless to say from now on we make sure the crate door is closed! Phew!

Ugh, it was horrible Lynn! Especially so soon after the collar incident too...Zoey was trying to buck away from the crate and so was strangling herself in the process, it took me holding her body towards the crate and Lyle tugging with all his might at the harness to get her free!

Kasper's new harness is here!! *happy dance* :woohoo:

It's essentially the same as his DoxLock harness, but in red. We found this harness £10+ cheaper than a DoxLock harness, so went with it. It's very sturdy, and the band that goes under the chest is much softer so there's even less chance of it rubbing.

He just looks oh so cute in it!!

Zoey has been a nightmare puppy today...she got a really long, tiring walk, but the only time she rested after it was when I had a nap, so it feels like I haven't had a break from her and she has been crazy today!! She's finally settled to chew on a toy for a while, so I'm leaving her to wear herself out a little before doing her pre-bed walk...

Been doing loads of dog food research today. Our current dog food has 20% meat so I think I'm gonna switch to one with 35% next time, we've given it to Kasper in the past and he liked it. Zoey might have to adjust, as a puppy she didn't like fish-flavoured foods and it's salmon, but she'll eat what she's given!!

She already turned her nose up at a meal today, but adding a little hot water did the trick (it's what we did when she was a pup!). She's never been very motivated by food.

Aw poor Frodo! I know there's an American review site that quite a few dog owners use to check how high quality the food they're feeding their pups is, and to see what other brands are good to feed. It's here if you fancy a gander...although if Frodo does well on this new food there's obviously no need to change

I really love these type of harnesses! There's no strap between the legs to rub, they're really sturdy and offer good control for dogs that pull (which both of ours do, like steam trains! )
Thanks, I think the red really suits him! :)

Zoey had a horrible walk last night. It was her pre-bed walk and we took her to a farmers' field with a public footpath running through it. Well, halfway through the walk three HUGE Golden Retrievers ran up to her and started leaning over her, one barking and growling. Poor Zoey didn't know what to do

The owner was way back, yelling at his dogs really aggressively (the dogs didn't pay a blind bit of notice - that's some good training you've done there!) which I think freaked Zoey out even more. The dogs continued to swarm Zoey, who lay on the ground and offered tons of calming signals. It was really horrible and shook all of us up.

I don't get why people let their dogs off-lead when the dogs won't ever return when called. It's stupid and dangerous...

Poor Zoey never gets to see friendly dogs, they're always horrible to her. I wish we knew someone nearby who had a dog or two she could socialise with...maybe when the puppy we walk is a bit older she could visit him...

Thank you Kate  Yes, her eyes are really dark, almost black in colour. Such a contrast to Kasper's golden eyes, although I think they suit her and hold a lot of expression.

Whingey girl had to spend 30 minutes in her crate whilst we put together the new mouse cage...she was not happy and refused to finish her food (although ate most of it first!!) in protest

Oh! Look at the size on that tongue, too! :rolling:

We have had such a stressful day here as we had the boiler replaced (yay!). This meant Kasper was a very sad, stressed out and unhappy boy as there were unknown men in the house. All in all he coped very well though, but I did feel sorry for him!

We have a friend coming around tonight and are hoping to introduce Kasper to him (out on a walk) so that Kasper doesn't have to spend any more time in his crate. Hopefully they will get along and Kasper won't be fearful of him after the walk - we have some liver cooking to help with the bonding process ;)

Off for a hot bath now, yippeee! :rolling:

Hmm. It was a hot bath, just about...we filled the bath with water just from the hot tap, and the bath was acceptably warm...but it still wasn't boiling hot  I don't know whether we should say something or not...surely the hot water coming from a new boiler should be really hot?? It's still a hundred times better than it was though!

And the boiler men broke our toilet seat too *rolls eyes*

They were good with the dogs though, especially when we let Kasper out of his crate and into the living room. We explained he was a rescue and scared of people and they made sure to not open the living room door, but to knock and wait until Lyle had come to them, which I thought was good of them.

Zoey has an old Nylabone that's never been used before. We found it in the toy bin, I think we bought Kasper it the Christmas before last, and he was never interested. Zoey is a huge Nylabone fan though and is going crazy over it

There's usually a temperature control somewhere or other - google the make and model and see if there's anything on there about turning it up. Sometimes they set it low so that you don't burn yourself!

I eventually learned to set my boiler at a temperature that gave me just right for using - not too hot to burn but not too cool. It works treat so I can turn on the hot tap and water is ready for using without having to fiddle with the cold tap.
I learnt to do it when we had the old style immersion heater and a house full of small children.. I also tested the cost with this style of unit and found it was cheaper to set a useable temperature which is "on" all the time, rather than having to fire it up when a bath was needed etc.,
Look it up in the manual they should have given you, or Google your make, as Kate says.

Ooh, a hot bath... Sound glorious! I manage with showers as I'm worried I wouldn't be able to get out of a bath! Though my corner bath has a moulded seat and I sometimes use that but it's still only usable with the shower.

    :help::help:

Wow!,, Who is that in the bath with me? Not noticed him (oops) before! (Ooooo I wish!).....

Don't know who it is Ollie, but it looks like the water is a bit deep and you both need rescuing!!

I know how to set the water heaters we have over here, but they seem to be different than what you have there, so I am no help at all, Red.:face-sad:

We set the temperature control to its' highest setting, but the water still doesn't come out hot enough. It does come out hot, just not hot enough for a *really* hot bath...I reckon we'll just leave it though, my dad said their boiler at home is the same :/ :face-plain:

Ollie, I would LOVE to be able to have a shower!!! Love love love! Our last three houses have only had baths, so I haven't had a shower in over 2 years...
