Yup, the target stick arrived today

It's AWESOME!! You can make the target longer and shorter and the click is a nice volume too. You press the button to produce a click.

So essentially when the dog touches the target, you click (the click is what tells the dog they did the right thing) and then reward. At first you might need to break the behaviour down into smaller pieces (which is called shaping); for example with Zoey I clicked when she looked toward the target at first, then when she moved towards it, and finally when she nudged it with her nose.

It was funny, with Zoey she picked it up faster when the target was longer. Kasper on the other hand was confused by such a long target. Zoey went instinctively to the ball on the end of the target and picked it up super quickly.

Here you can see what a star Kasper is when training Zoey too. He just sits on the couch or footstool and waits for his treats  ...the only thing he will break his stay for is leg weaves, he just finds them too tempting! :tooth:

Kasper, however, took a lot longer to pick up what the target stick was for, which was surprising. He offered all sorts of behaviours bless him trying to figure out what I wanted (lie down, sit, tall and even a sit pretty which we haven't even mastered yet!).

I had to make the target quite shorter and point it towards Kasper, and click as he was approaching, otherwise he just targeted the metal stick as you can see here...

By the end of the minute long training session he was fast picking it up, and I continued to click and treat just before he got to the target. Once he'd earned his treat I threw it across the room so he had to go chase after it, as that reset his position and meant I could click as he approached the target again.

This was the behaviour I got at first :001_rolleyes: so he improved a lot in such a short time! :001_tongue:

(please excuse the hairy floor, our vacuum is broken :001_rolleyes: We have been brushing the carpet with a rubber dog brush but it doesn't pick all the hairs up)

Thanks Ollie, I hadn't even noticed! I've started trying to brush him more often as he is moulting, even just stroking him brings off huge handfuls of fur...and I do like the food they are currently on, not that Zoey seems to agree :tooth:
