Rachael's waters went at 12.30 last night. The hospital said to go in at 7.30am, but she felt really ill and was worried (who isn't with their first) so I sent them off at just after 1am. She was 2cm at 2am - am now waiting for another update from my son and will post when I get it.

Just text Danny for an update - baby has arrived!! She was born at 5:08am (good job they didn't listen to the hospital!) and weighed 8lb 14oz. She's called Caitlyn Anita.

I'm a grandma!!!! And you're the first people I've told!!

Right, I'm off to shower, change my son's bed, try to tidy his room, get the car seat and go collect them from hospital! I can't believe they're sending her out straight away - not much in the way of after-care any more is there!

Her mom isn't and my son didn't say she is so I doubt it. Looks like some dark hair under that hat though. When I spoke to him I could hear her gurgling in the background. Sweet! Hope she's a quiet baby, but as I'd said not to come on the 13th or at night and she's done both, I think we'll all need earplugs - including the cats!

Welcome, Caitlyn Anita, to our world.
You certainly didn't waste your time once you got going for real. All that practicing over the last days paid off for you.
Will you have a midwife visiting you over the next days? The service varies so much in different areas.
Please ask someone to give you a big cuddle from me.
My first grand child was born on a 13th and it was a Friday!

Yech. Or as Lynn put it in an earlier post, EWWWY. (I got the gist, but I'm not sure what it means). Reminds me of the thing that mothers do that turns the stomachs of non-maternal onlookers; they ask the sprog if its nappy needs changing...AND THEN THEY LIFT IT UP AND SNIFF IT! a) why ask? It's not going to say 'Why yes, I believe it does', is it? b) why not take it elsewhere to sniff it??
I don't know what you mean by denial...and I can't hear you anyway because I've got my fingers in my ears and am singing 'LALALALALALALA...'

Ewwwwy (Or ewwww) Is not in the dictionary - its the sound one makes at something disgusting. So, I'm thinking, you did get the gist. I'm also positing that you might actually like babies except that you have an apparently super astute sense of smell which has forced you to distance yourself. Possibly.

So how do you do with the spectacle of public breast feeding?

Yes, it's an offspring of any description. Public breast feeding is all right if done discreetly. Militant mothers who strip off in the middle of a restaurant/shop/cafe/street and clamp a howling brat to their completely exposed bits and then glare belligerently at anyone who dares raise an eyebrow are NOT my favourite sort!

I fully agree (of course) that breast feeding is superior, and the benefits are enormous.
As for feeding in public, breast or bottle, does it matter? Just ignore those dirty thoughts leary folk.
We are only just sorting the restaurants that bannish breast feeding to the toilet! One of my friends asked them to serve her meal in there at the same time. They were shocked and started to splutter about Health & Safety, then realise just what they were saying....
Wazza will fill us in on the wording of the latest situation on the legality of breast feeding in public.

I'm glad my message got through!!! Will be going for national BBC next! Folk at work keep calling me Granny, Nanny Kate, Grandma - I never realised I was related to so many people! ;)

Actually I e-mailed about 458 people (well, slight exaggeration) and have spent the day reading replies, relating the story of the birth, and cooing over the picture. I only saw Caitlyn for about 10 mins yesterday - I had to go out in the evening and they'd been at Rach's mom's before that - so it still hasn't really sunk in!

Rachael decided she didn't want to breastfeed, and as she was only in hospital for 12 hours she wouldn't have had any help if she'd wanted to! They didn't show them how to bathe her, and I had to tell them how to mix up the baby formula - bearing in mind my knowledge is 20 years out of date so the 'modern' thinking is probably different.

No point bathing her; they only get mucky again. My advice is to pop her in a binbag with only the head showing, then just take her out and hose her down once a day until housetrained. See? Practical and efficient...
Only in for 12 hours? My word, I wouldn't come out until it was eighteen years old...

My friend said today that when her first born was 6 weeks old her husband came home to find her in the hall with all the baby's stuff packed in bags, baby in pushchair etc. "What're you doing?" he asked. "Taking it back" she answered, "I don't want to do this anymore". Think we've all had moments like that!

This is what happened when I first became a grandmother. I had lost my father to a stroke in 1996 and I felt especially abandoned for over a year. He and I were very close but my mother and I never were and I could never understand her coolness, though I loved her very much too and tried hard to do just anything to make her happy with me. About a year after Dad died, someone found a cassette tape of him singing songs which he had written and recorded and then put in his dresser drawer. They made me a copy and gave it to me to have. I got to hear his unique voice again and enjoy his talent. I felt like crying tears of joy but had a feeling that if I could spare the tears that something wonderful would come about. Then I said, " Oh, how I wish his soul could be reborn into a beautiful little child. " Little did I know what was about to happen. My son's wife had been told that she could never have a child due to surgeries she had for pre-cancerous growths she had when just reaching puberty many years before. About 6 weeks later , my husband came home and said , " Guess what happened today? I found out we are going to be grandparents . " I called my son and he said yes, and we know when it was conceived too. It was the afternoon of the Louisianna State University game . We put on our own little half-time performance . " That happened to be the day I made the wish. I do not know if there is reincarnation or not but Opal has my daddy's unique shade of blue eyes and his personality and temperment. I bonded with her before she was ever born . I went with my daughter-in-law for the ultra-sound and at first the baby would not move its legs so we could tell the sex but when I began to talk... she began to move and kick her legs when she heard my voice. When they said it was a girl... I was so happy.... because my dad just doted on my sister and I and he loved his own sisters so very much. When Opal was first born and was brought down to the room... she seemed to seek out my voice.

Diane your pictures are marvellous. I love the eagle (and the cliff it lives on!) You live in a truly beautiful place.

Janice that's a marvellous story. My nan always told me that death shouldn't be sad because every baby born has the soul of someone who'd passed before. She said that if there weren't enough 'human' souls then a much loved animal would pass, and this was why some people had so much love for animals, like me. She said evil souls aren't allowed though, and are denied rebirth.

Neil - is there an easy way to print all of the posts? I'd like to keep all of the good wishes the hencammers have sent for posterity to show Caitlyn when she's older.

I wish she'd been right about the evil souls, bless her. But Lynn's right, there are births close to deaths where you see a spark of the departed in the new life, I've seen it myself.
I'm glad you're printing the pages off for Caitlyn, Kate. Just think, it makes me go misty-eyed at her reading my baby-rearing advice when she has a sprog of her own...!

    Keeper of the hens

It'll all be in "The Hencam Book"..... err... when we write it!

Other than that, I suppose you could copy/paste it into Word? When you print from a browser the results are sometimes... funky.

Yes, that's what I thought. I tried it out but it looks a little odd because of the format, and the avatars don't copy. Perhaps I could do screen dumps and paste them together. Something to try one evening I suppose!!

My son has taken some more pictures and I'll post some soon. She's very cute but has her days and nights mixed up. "Mom and Dad" hardly got any sleep again last night and both look shattered.

No ... Danny is one of those kids that thinks he's the only one who's EVER suffered this, and it couldn't possibly have been that bad when WE were the new parents. My tongue is really sore from all the times I'm biting it like a good mommy/nanny!!!

CC - I think its time to get in that little putt-putt car of yours & speed up the motorway to B'Ham for a little chat with Danny. LOL - oh, I can just picture the scene if that actually happened. The door flies open; Danny looks up; all he can see is a silhouette with big big hair; for just one moment the silence is so stunning you can hear your heart beating; and then....

CC I think you'd be an excellent hencam version of Supernanny, but I don't think Caitlyn's mom would be very happy. She's a bit old fashioned like that. I think a cattleprod would be an extremely useful way of teaching a baby when to eat, sleep, etc., but she'd probably use it on me instead if I let you in!!!!

A babygrow is an all in one suit with poppers up the front (or the back) and down the legs. Do you call them romper suits?

    Yes, pictures!

Kate-I went off to meditate before work. Right in the middle of it, it came to me: SNAPS! Set up so you can remove the lower half of the baby for cleaning without taking the whole outfit off. Yes? Funny I never realized that our word for those metal alternatives to buttons was based on the noise they make. Interesting.

CC we all know that, while this is your external response, internally you are going: :swingin:

I told Danny that Hencam was sending Caitlyn a hencam babygrow, and he told Rachael that 'they' were sending a suit. She said "what? A chicken suit?" and he cracked up at the thought of a baby dressed as a chicken with a comb on the top of her head, feathers, etc!!!!!!! Then Danny said "how can a website send a present?" so I had to explain that "real people" own the hens. We'll just put it down to lack of sleep and leave it at that!!

Being rather an old crone, I am not famliar with the modern ways of caring for mantainance of 2M babies Diane. I need to know about this "Set up so you can remove the lower half of the baby for cleaning" Do you unscrew the baby's bottom half or is it fitted with velcro?
