I do not know what the drug was but have heard it was pure interferion. What ever it was... it was expesive ... over $ 300.00 back in 1975 for one injection... but well worth every penny.

Cor, Janice. You had a horrible time and so did your family.

The doctor saying that there was, after all, a healthy baby is still a bone of contention today. There is a belief in some staff that as long as the baby is alright then everything is OK, regardless of what the mother has gone through.

Your previous comment on babies born in their own homes, is demonstrated in todays UK statistics when just booking a home birth actually can half your chances of C/S.

Wow Janice, you've had such and eventful life and always have an uplifting story for us. It must've been a terrible time for you all and I shudder when I think that our health system idolise the American one and want to move us over that way. I think it'd be a really bad thing to do. I saw a TV programme where a girl had been born with a heart defect, and the health insurance company considered it a 'pre-existing condition' so wouldn't cover any ops etc. What were the parents supposed to do let her die? What a terrible cold-blooded system.

Yes, $ 300 for ONE INJECTION?? It's immoral. Do they leave uninsured people to die, then?

I think they do, though they're not that obvious about it. As I understand it folk with insurance will get everything, however experimental or expensive because their insurance will pay, whereas the rest get the bare minimum or a hefty bill. Don't know what happens if they can't pay it.

Back on thread...I'VE GOT MY NEW BABY! Livia is 22 weeks old, black with a blue-black sheen. And Onion isn't quite sure what to make of her; he's barged her sideways a couple of times in an unconvincing show of machismo, but is actually following her round the garden like a particularly attentive bridesmaid...:)

Apparently she laid her first egg in the box at the auction! Small fracas when she thought she'd go to bed in the missile silo that leads to the catflap, but once I popped her in the hutch, and Onion went in after her, all was quiet. She's very tame, which is nice. Only complains mildly at being picked up.

Had Caitlyn overnight last night! Danny and Rach had friends around for drinks (lots of drinks) so thought it best to get someone else to look after the baby. She slept really well - I didn't! She makes lots of little noises in her sleep which kept me awake. Verryyy tired today now!

Too right, and reminded me why people over 40 shouldn't have babies - too much hard work!!! They've been gone a week tomorrow and I think I've adjusted just about. Will still worry about how they're managing but it is nice to have some space, less washing, and some tidyness!! The sainted Kathleen should come over here for a rest!

Kate, on the subject of what happens to those with no insurance.... the ones who suffer most over here are the middle class self-employed. The poor can get public assistance through Medicaid , the older people have Medicare , usually . There are many exceptions to this too ... sadly. Many self-employed can not afford to buy health coverage . Many people have no coverage because they lose their jobs and along with that their health insurance. Hospitals are not supposed to turn away those who can not afford to pay..... but they do . Sometimes it is impossible for an insured to have a doctor treat them if the person has not met their annual co-pay . One time my son and I needed to see a doctor for the flu ( 1988 ) and though we had Blue Cross Insurance through my job... I had no money for the co-pay ( Stan had lost his business at the time and we were broke ..... had to start over from scratch. ). We were turned away. Bless a kind person who saw our plight and gave us money to see a different doctor. Would not let me repay her and said that it was her gift from the Church.

What a wonderful person Janice - if only everyone were so generous towards those less fortunate.

I hear so much about people in the UK "raking it in" when they're on benefits, but I don't know how they manage it. Danny is on a low wage, Caitlyn is 10 weeks old, but they still haven't received a penny in benefits. I'm just grateful that we've been able to support them so far, but funds are beginning to run low. How do those with no one survive? I worry about them constantly but I suppose that's a mother's curse.

She's a real delight - good natured, smiley, happy and content. Dribbling like mad but no teeth yet. She can roll over but hasn't quite got to grips with crawling - heaven help us when she does! She loves to be stood up though - she might cut out crawling and go straight to walking at this rate!

I really didn't think she'd grab my heart the way she has. Everytime I see her I just beam, she's such a sweetie. I wish I could bottle it. It does bring back memories of when my kids were little, but I don't think you have enough time to enjoy your own children, so you make up for that with grandkids.

We had her today while her mom and dad popped out for a couple of hours - she was an angel, but the look of delight on her face when she saw them come back was priceless. I'm so proud of them both for the great job they're doing.

ie., 10year old grand daughter today asking for me to take her for her ears piercing tomorrow evening!!!

Vee was the shortened name of her gran on her Mum's side, don't know what for.
Mollie is name of her other gran of her Dad's .

Her eyes are very strange - somedays they're grey and somedays a deep blue. I suppose its something to do with surrounding light etc but haven't worked out what yet!

Are you quite, quite mad, woman??? When LSE goes away, I LIVE on asparagus, strawberries and cocopops.
    And Pinot Grigio, obviously.
