I found a pattern today for a crocheted (sp?) one. You make 10 squares each of 3 designs then stitch them together. I could take years doing that!!!!

Leave it too long and arthritis will get you! Won't be able to do anything that requires holding something then! I'm self taught at that too. Seems I teach myself everything so I won't be trying out hang-gliding or flying a plane or anything like that (much to the relief of the general public I'm sure!)

Mine was pink. I remember it well as it sluttered down to the botttom of the pool.
My Great, great Aunt Lily knitted it for me, it was very thick... and heavy when wet!!!

She was an odd-bod. She recycled everything. Your Christmas present would be something made out of what you had given her on previous occasions.
She also made loads of stuff for the local theatrical group. I had a magnificent crinoline when I went to the Mayor's Ball.

Another character you must be sure to mention in your book.

I'm realizing that mine was lined and really had very fine and light thread for the crochet part. Probably the reason I escaped that kind of life-long memory...

My old (age 94) friend Ethel remembered with horror a knitted bathing costume which her ma made for her. For a start it was prawn pink, so from a distance she seemed to be starkers. Secondly she had the aforementioned wool/water interface problem and remembered getting out of the sea and waddling like a penguin with the gusset somewhere around her knees...

Well it still haunted her 80years later! She took things to heart; although she loved music ranging from Puccini to Dean Martin, she would never sing along ecause some silly cow of a music teacher told her she couldn't sing when she was 8. :\

She was 14 when it happened? Devastating.

Most 'observers' are people who take things to heart. Better to keep a discreet distance, they decide...

And yet she had enough impact to become an international personality on a hen loving web site!

She'd love it. In a mortified sort of way!
She had a shopping trolley and we hatched a 'free food' plan; we thought she could advertise as a 38 year old blonde in the classified ads, and get the men to meet her at a restaurant for a meal. When she got there, she'd say it was a typo for 88, they would be too embarrassed to NOT buy her a meal and she'd order five courses, eating one and stowing the rest in The Trolley to take home and freeze. We worked out that one of these a week would drastically reduce her food bills...I wish she'd gone through with it! :D

Sorry to disappoint you Diane but I have three boys eldest is 26, then 22 and the youngest is 18. So I'm afraid they're all well and truely grown up, but still living at home.
The elder two are settled with girlfrieds and the youngest is training to be a soccer coach at the David Beckham Acadamy in London. He is trying at present to get work in America at sometime next year coaching in soccer camps.
He's so enthused by footie and sometimes can't stop talking about it. :blahblahblah:
But he's following his dream and I think thats very admirable, I'm very proud of him.

Hey red, talking of swimming costumes made of wool, my mum in law is a bit crazy and when her dogs (bitches)were speyed she made them wear little suits made from swimming costumes. They looked so funny that at Christmas we make an advent calendar of events that have happened during the year and we did a picture of all the dogs ready to dive into a pool like syncronised swimmers. Ah, madness.

    "Do I answer..or not...ohhh I don't want to look like a TOTAL boffin...perhaps best not to then..."

It actually sounds a bit obscene, now that I've see it in actual use... All the better then. :P

Jonny the answer is always. And never. But don't worry - you are never a total boffin. ;) Sorry about the kitty, Kate.

No, a true pooter boffin has absolutely zero sense of humour - except for esoteric pooter-speak based ones that no-one except another true pooter boffin would understand. So don't worry, Jonny! :)

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAITLYN!!!!

(Well, it was on Tuesday actually, but I was so busy I didn't get chance to post, not that she knows about hencam anyway!)

It brings all the memories flooding back - wool, needles, painful fingers. Damn blanket!!!

Think industrial Kate..machines......on second thought perhaps not...unless you BUILT a huge knitting machine JUST for her blankets...she could brag to her mates when she was a teenager..

"My Gran built a HUGE machine JUST to knit me GINORMOUS blankets..isn't that sick!"

Note to those not in the know ,"sick" is like wicked, cool, fantabulous, etc

    OK, Confession time.

    I have a "Bwanki"
Yes at my age! Iknow. I know.

It came about when I upgraded to a doulble bed knitting machine.
I had bought a load of 2ply wool in pastel colours from a place that sold stuff rescued from shop fires.

The first thing I knitted was this blanket, about one metre by 2 metres. All narrow stripes. I fringed the ends and that was "My Bwanki" born about 45 years ago.

He has been all over the world with me and provided much needed cuddle-warmth especially when in cold and damp strange beds. Yes even one in Florida!

I hope Caitlyn's blanket will have such good service.

I love the way you said that so casually, I've never seen a shop like that.

If I could knit..and that's a BIG *IF*..I'd knit a blanket for my new grandson, who's due the first week in June..only 4 months away, so there wouldn't be time to do it ..even if I did know how.

    Oh Lynn. It's a BOY.
It must be amazing to know which variety so long before baby is born - though remember they don't always get it right....

My daughter didn't think I would be able to cope with knowing beforehand and wouldn't tell me. Especially as she knew I wanted a girl so badly. Then they gave her a boy's name!

It's definitely a little boy, the doctor was positive about it. They have already named him Wyatt... I think they jumped the gun a bit myself. I've got pictures of him already. I'm going to buy baby boy clothes and hope they are all right about it.
