The two little cockerels are fighting, despite being brothers. I had two cockerels before (father & son) with no problems but they are ALL picking on little Fish. To the extent that tonight he has been put to bed with the rabbits. Is there ANYTHING I can do to stop them picking on him? And is keeping him separate going to make things better or worse? The rabbits are quite happy (I once locked Locky in with them overnight with no problems) and Fish seemed all right but am I doing the right thing? I can't rehome him; nobody wants cockerels...:face-crying:

    Keeper of the hens

    Oh no CC :(

As far as I know there's not much you can do, but others may have better ideas, I've only been through that situation twice. I did read some things about keeping boys in a 'bachelor pad' with no females in can prevent fighting. I've read about quite large numbers of boys living that way, even choosing to go round and sleep together, but I don't know if it would work if fighting had already begun?

I think if you have a lot of females to males (do I remember five being the minimum...?) then that can work too, but you'd need quite a lot of room...

Have you tried putting an ad on Preloved? I know cockerels can be hard to rehome, but we did get lucky with our boys and they went to a fab home, I'll ask my dad where he advertised them.

I shall persist...but Nugget is picking on him too. Locky is a bit more tolerant. I hope he's all right sleeping with the rabbits tonight! I'm going to keep trying; he seems to be all right sitting on his own but I worry that it isn't much life for him. On the other hand it's better than the stewpot (not that I ever would but it's what a lot of american websites mention!)...

In a small pen, with not enough hens, there isn't much you can do, CC. My Silky boys got along in a pen by themselves as long as no hen was there, but now I have them in separate cages because they started fighting over hens. I have their pens inside the chicken shed, so they don't wake up the neighbors. Your right it's very hard to rehome Roosters. I have 6 Silkie roosters that I haven't found homes for..and I can't stand the thought of stewpots, I'm not much of a farmer..I can't eat my babies.:ack2:

I can't even eat their EGGS, Lynn! :rolling: I put him to bed with the others much later when they were all asleep. And today he sat on his own but seemed to be left alone. At one point they were all sitting near eachother and no war broke out. Fingers crossed...

They could learn to get along, you'll just have to keep an eye on him. I can't eat the eggs from my chickens either, CC.

Well, fingers crossed it seems to have calmed down. Nugget is a bully, so I wait till she's dozy then pop him into bed. Between her bedtime and his, Fish comes in and settles down on my shoulder to watch the Antiques Road Trip and has a grape. Then he wipes his beak on my t shirt... Last night I had to drag Nugget out and clip her wing feathers but she was quite good. And she was still there when I got home today so it might have stopped her little Great Escape game. John next door found her on the wall between their house and ours so he shouted at her and she dropped back down into our garden...so I clipped her wings. Spoilsport, I know...
