    Keeper of the hens

About 18 - 20 weeks, Kate, but it can be later...oh right! Sorry :rolling:

Well, now you have some useless information about chicken's noses, and to answer your proper question: They do smell sometimes. Broody poos stink, and runny poos (sorry diane!) also smell horrible. But if you clean their house out regularly and turn over the soil in the run / garden then they don't really smell at all.

Just a quick up date now that the residents of the Highland Hen Hoose (HHH) have been in situ for 10 days. We have have two lovely large eggs each day and I've been informed by the breeder that the rest will start to lay any time between 18 to 24 weeks of age. we look forward to that. It still a race to see who actully finds the eggs, Elaine is in the front at this stage, being she works at night and is in during lunch time when the eggs are laid.

Having now had the girls in situ for almost two weeks and seeing some of your comments on keeping hens, its now time to get off the fence and take the plunge, go out there and get yourself some hens of your own. I can't tell you the rewarding feeling that you will get from keeping them. You only have to start with three hens and they don't take up much room in the garden. If you are handy with a hammer and saw you can even build your own coop its great fun. so come on hencammers.:cheer:

Mine do. Onion's had the occasional smack from the cats, and Tuppence has had the occasional peck, so everybody knows where everybody else's tolerance levels are. Or aren't...

Our cat was too old to play with chickens, and lives inside next door anyway. Some of the neighbours cats were seen off by the hens several times. Domesticated cats are too tame and too well fed to seriously attack a hen in a flock.

We have come up with one name so far that is my wife has named one of them. Bella, this one seems to be at the bottom of the pecking order as when my wife (Sandra) go's in at night to secure the coop it is always out side waiting for her, and when she approches Bella bend down on to her stomache and opens her wings out and is quite happy to be picked up and placed in to the coop.

Bella sounds like a very sweet chicken, Fred. I'll bet she's now a favorite hen. I have a few special hens like that too...and I always give them first crack at the treats that I bring out to them at evening feeding time. ( yes, I'm a bad mom, I play favorite with my special girls. )

    Keeper of the hens

Oh gee, thanks Fred! That's so special to have a hen named after me  , i'm glad they're all doing okay! Any chance of some more photos? *smiles winningly* :P

Bella thinks you're roosters! That's good, it means that she already accepts you as 'one of the gang' :D Does she kind of dance her way into a crouching position and hold her wings out to the side a little? Libby used to do that to EVERYBODY and it made it a lot easier to pick her up, although she was pretty tame anyway, and both Tilly and Milly do it from time to time...

Is Bella one of the chooks laying eggs then? When they squat down i read it means that they are already laying, or they're about to start laying very soon!
