    Keeper of the hens

I (finally) started working with Kasper and his paddling pool a few days ago. I had to empty it out first, because it was full to the brim with rain water. It's so weird that Zoey has no qualms about jumping in...she's normally the scaredy pup!

Kasper actually did really well; I marked him for hovering his paw above the pool bottom, then for touching it, repeat with second paw, and finally for him stepping into it. Within a few minutes he was sitting in there no issue, so it went pretty well! I mean it'll be a different story when it has a mm of water in I'm sure, but...

    Zoey's face :rolling:

     photo garden1_zpsjenpclxg.jpg

    One in one out (:

     photo garden4_zpsot7mxf6a.jpg

Oh, lookit that concentration from them both!

     photo garden13_zpsaqtdxjxs.jpg

Kasper's great, because when you let him in a garden he just chills, especially if it's sunny...whereas Zoey is a nightmare :tooth: She is constantly looking for trouble, be it eating grass (seriously, there's like ten blades total in our garden and she's still an arse :rolling: ), pulling sticks off the bush or something else stupid...I have to keep her busy and focused every second!

     photo garden12_zpsej3n5vrx.jpg

This is her 'I am very calm and serious, actually' face

     photo garden11_zpswoyyxqh1.jpg

We also let the dogs play outdoors. Normally we shoo them inside when they play, as they can be a little vocal...but if they can't enjoy the garden on a sunny June afternoon when can they?!

     photo garden5_zpsyabzezgo.jpg

And this is what happened when I asked Lyle to get the dogs to pose for a photo...I wanted them both sat in front of the pretty bush in our garden, but Lyle hasn't ever really posed the dogs for a photo before. He didn't know how to ask which dog to do what...hilarity ensued!

This is my favourite photo from the bunch - what is Zoey doing halfway up the shed?!?! :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

     photo garden8_zpsgka7xzfm.jpg

And I got them into position within about 20 seconds :face-angel:

     photo garden10again_zpsnetrg4y5.jpg

It was sooo much fun spending a nice afternoon out in the garden. We're going to start doing it a lot more...and hopefully we'll get to have a barbecue at some point!!

And, even though Lyle *constantly* says he is terrible at taking photos...look at these belters he got!

     photo garden14_zpskyrhdq6u.jpg

(why does she always look SO serious?!)

Can you see the grass stuck to her nose? :rolling:

     photo garden15_zpsvwfrxdoq.jpg

Mr Big Nose (a title normally reserved for Zoey!) and me doing a weird dirty-footed pirouette in the background...I was cleaning out the pond, and Zoey was dancing around my ankles making it extremely hard :blushing:

     photo garden17_zpsaehewzip.jpg

Ah, see. She's not *always* serious.

     photo garden16_zpseqafokiv.jpg
    Thanks for looking! :)

I cannot believe how much of a poser Zoe is - does she wander up to complete strangers with cameras and pose for them?:face-smile:

CC, she's too busy dancing for attention, covering strangers in kisses and chewing on their fingers to pose! Even if I have ham or chicken, Zoey thinks strangers are far more rewarding than even the highest value foods. It's kinda cute in an annoying way

Haha I know Kate; a perfectly timed photo!

    Keeper of the hens

Began phase two of the paddling pool training yesterday: putting water in the pool and getting Kasper to go in!

    "I refuse!"

     photo water4_zpsijidzzfo.jpg

He was very uncertain. I had to capture each little step forwards; so a paw over the water = click&treat, a paw in the water = c/t. Next paw over, next paw in etc etc. This was when the pool had 1cm of water in, at a push :sarcastic:

    He's in!!

     photo water1_zpsfxzaszay.jpg

After a few minutes he was even able to sit down in the water. I didn't ask him to, and he wasn't 100% comfortable (see his expression?) but...yay! He'll be lying in a full pool in no time

     photo water5_zpszgkos8g0.jpg

See Kasper, it's not too scary...

     photo water_zpsttzs7osc.jpg

Zoey of course weirded us out further by jumping straight in the pool when it had water in it, she didn't care at all...these pups are forever surprising me...

     photo water2_zpsany1irel.jpg

She has an obsession with drinking out the barrel...

     photo water3_zpssmryqwxf.jpg

    Happy soggy dog

It's so funny how they love drinking filthy rainwater full of elks and grollies to tap water (which to them must stink of fluoride and chlorine and stuff). They'll soon be doing breaststroke, Red!

The worst thing is when they drink out of sludgy puddles - yeugh! We were taking Zoey to drink from a stream the other night on a big night walk, and we passed a puddle of really thick mud...guess who tried to drink it when clean water was a few feet?!? *palm head*

4cm of water in the pool today, and we got him in it!

     photo work3_zpsexxieyqr.jpg

There was much hesitation, and we had to work a little slower than the day before, but I don't care because HE DID IT!!!

     photo work2_zpsfmnmoqdt.jpg

And he even behaved whilst I cleaned all the bits and bobs

    Keeper of the hens

Thank you! He sure has come a long way :tooth: Because we're doing everything sooo slowly, and rewarding him with very good things (treats, what else?!) the ultimate aim is to change his feelings towards the pool...so paddling pool = awesome things, instead of paddling pool = scary!

Hopefully once we're done, he will feel confident and completely at ease with the pool, and can use it as a cool down in summer

Video from today...you've already seen the photos, so don't feel the need to watch

Thanks CC! He's so much easier to counter condition than Zoey because he really loves his food.

With the harness I've been counter conditioning Zoey to (for the past 6 months...) I'm using ham, and it's still not enticing enough to let us move along quickly. With the paddling pool and Kasper I'm using kibble and cat treats (!) and he works his bum off for them!! :tooth:

    HE'S IN THE FULL POOL!!!

Skip watching this one, it's just the build up from 2 inches to full pool:

Here he is today playing confidence building games with the pool. There's no hesitation, and he's very comfortable and fluid. Wonderful!

You forget, we live in oven!! The house is incredibly warm, so frequent breaks where we can all crowd in the pool are necessary :tooth:

That and walking dogs all day every day makes it feel warm, even if it really isn't.

I am so jealous Kate...we had to take two dogs back early yesterday because it was so warm. We're adding another condition on our site about how we can refuse to walk dogs for the full time in scorching weather.

I feel so sorry for the animals in this weather - I've put bowls of water outside front and back. Put a low bowl out the front in case the hedgehog comes past and wants a drink.

I think it's so sad to see everything dying for lack of water when we as humans waste so much of it. Dried up riverbeds are the worst because it makes you think about how many plants, animals, insects, amphibians, fish etc have died or are struggling to survive.
